Book excerpt: Restaging the Past is the first edited collection devoted to the study of historical pageants in Britain, ranging from their Edwardian origins to the present day. Across Britain in the twentieth century, people succumbed to ‘pageant fever’. Thousands dressed up in historical costumes and performed scenes from the history of the places where they lived, and hundreds of thousands more watched them. These pageants were one of the most significant aspects of popular engagement with the past between the 1900s and the 1970s: they took place in large cities, small towns and tiny villages, and engaged a whole range of different organised groups, including Women’s Institutes, political parties, schools, churches and youth organisations. Pageants were community events, bringing large numbers of people together in a shared celebration and performance of the past; they also involved many prominent novelists, professional historians and other writers, as well as featuring repeatedly in popular and highbrow literature. Although the pageant tradition has largely died out, it deserves to be acknowledged as a key aspect of community history during a period of great social and political change. Indeed, as this book shows, some traces of ‘pageant fever’ remain in evidence today.

Book Disability in the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Disability in the Industrial Revolution written by David M. Turner and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. An electronic version of this book is also available under a Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC-ND) license, thanks to the support of the Wellcome Trust. The Industrial Revolution produced injury, illness and disablement on a large scale and nowhere was this more visible than in coalmining. Disability in the Industrial Revolution sheds new light on the human cost of industrialisation by examining the lives and experiences of those disabled in an industry that was vital to Britain’s economic growth. Although it is commonly assumed that industrialisation led to increasing marginalisation of people with impairments from the workforce, disabled mineworkers were expected to return to work wherever possible, and new medical services developed to assist in this endeavour. This book explores the working lives of disabled miners and analyses the medical, welfare and community responses to disablement in the coalfields. It shows how disability affected industrial relations and shaped the class identity of mineworkers. The book will appeal to students and academics interested in disability, occupational health and social history.

Book Secular Martyrdom in Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Secular Martyrdom in Britain and Ireland written by Quentin Outram and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the concept and nature of the ‘people’s martyrology’, raising issues of class, community, religion and authority. It examines modern martyrdom through studies of Peterloo; Tolpuddle; Featherstone; Tonypandy; Emily Davison, fatally injured by the King’s horse on Derby Day, 1913; the 1916 Easter Rising; Jarrow, ‘the town that was murdered, and martyred in the 1930s’; David Oluwale, a Nigerian killed in Leeds in 1965; and Bobby Sands, the IRA hunger striker who died in 1981. It engages with the burgeoning historiography of memory to try to understand why some events, such as Peterloo, Tonypandy and the Easter Rising, have become household names whilst others, most notably Featherstone and Oluwale, are barely known. It will appeal to those interested in British and Irish labour history, as well as the study of memory and memorialization.

Book Herefordshire Taxes in the Reign of Henry VIII

Download or read book Herefordshire Taxes in the Reign of Henry VIII written by Michael A. Faraday and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is mainly a transcription of the documents produced during the levy of taxation in Herefordshire in the reign of Henry VIII. In fact its scope is somewhat wider than this because it includes prerogative grants, such as loans and benevolences, made to the king, although it fails to notice that they rested on the individual consent of the taxpayers. The transcription is complete, and the original spelling is retained. As a copy of the taxation documents this is a splendid source. Whether the documents provide an accurate account of the wealth of the county is more difficult to say. The accuracy of tax assessments of the period is extremely complicated, as this reviewer's 'Taxation under the early Tudors, 1485-1547', published in 2004, seeks to explore. In this current volume the reader will be well satisfied with the accuracy of the range and typicality of the transcription of the Herefordshire taxation documents.
