Book Deaf Students in Postsecondary Education

Download or read book Deaf Students in Postsecondary Education written by Susan B. Foster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992. With an ever-increasing number of deaf students entering higher education throughout the world, major strides need to be made in provision and support for them. This book recognises that the integration of deaf students into mainstream higher education raises complex and challenging problems. It has proved extremely difficult for deaf students to enter fully into the social and extra-curricular fabric of campus life – an essential factor in ensuring student success. The authors provide an assessment of state-of-the-art practice in postsecondary settings and suggest theoretical and practical approaches to providing support. There is discussion of the attainments of deaf graduates with commentaries by deaf persons about their experiences in college. In addition, statistics support the theoretical contentions and clearly demonstrate the benefits of postsecondary education to deaf people.

Book Guidelines for Multilingual Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs

Download or read book Guidelines for Multilingual Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Programs written by Christopher Kurz and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication aims to support the effort to create transformative changes within Deaf education teacher training programs in the United States and Canada. It is a critical time to reexamine these programs and ensure the provision of the highest quality education to prepare future teachers to meet the needs of Deaf students in today's increasingly multilingual and multimodal climate. Deaf education teacher preparation programs need to understand the multiple and intersecting identities of their students to be able to provide education that is equitable for all. Programs that approach Deaf education through a multilingual lens are in a better position to produce teachers who are knowledgeable about the diverse language and cultural needs of Deaf students. The guidelines set forth in this volume can be used to help develop new undergraduate and graduate teacher training programs or to transition an existing program. The key goals and anticipated outcomes of this volume are: to increase the number of multilingual Deaf education teacher preparation programs; to increase the number of fluent language and cultural models for Deaf children in varying educational environments; to increase the number of high quality teachers with competencies in multilingual strategies; to increase collaboration between teacher training programs; and to increase research and professional development focused in multilingual pedagogies.
