Book Collector s Guide to the Zeolite Group

Download or read book Collector s Guide to the Zeolite Group written by Robert J. Lauf and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among rock-forming minerals, the zeolite group is large and widespread, and is enormously important to industry. Zeolites form excellent crystals. The group is structurally complex and notable for its ability to exchange cations with surrounding solutions. Numerous diagrams help visualize important structural features that define various framework types. Over 200 photographs of these beautiful minerals show each species in its geological context. After a brief introduction, the general treatment of the subject begins with an explanation of the structural chemistry and taxonomy of the group. A section on their formation and geochemistry explains the kinds of environments where zeolites are formed. Then, an entry for each mineral series provides locality information and full-color photos wherever possible so that collectors can see what good specimens look like and which minerals one might expect to find in association with them. An extensive bibliography is provided for readers who wish to learn more about particular topics.

Book Collector s Guide to the Pyroxene Group

Download or read book Collector s Guide to the Pyroxene Group written by R. J. Lauf and published by Schiffer Earth Science Monogra. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 115 striking color photos display pyroxene group minerals in all their forms and colors. This group of rock-forming minerals is best known to collectors through well-formed diopside crystals from many localities, including in Canada, the northeastern United States, the Alpine regions of Europe, and through the gem-quality spodumene found in pegmatites from California to Pakistan. Spectacular recent finds of diopside in Pakistan, hedenbergite at Dal'negorsk, Russia, and aegirine in Malawi have added to the interest in this mineral group. Several pyroxene species are important in the gem trade, including colored varieties of spodumene (kunzite and hiddenite), green "chrome" diopside, and jadeite, one of the two true jade minerals. The informative text provides an introduction to their formation and geochemistry and a detailed entry for each mineral, including color reference photos. This book is essential for every mineral collector.

Book Collector s Guide to the Epidote Group

Download or read book Collector s Guide to the Epidote Group written by Robert J. Lauf and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 90 striking color photos display minerals of the epidote group, well known to mineral collectors for their rich colors and the many interesting minerals with which they occur. Lapidary artists also value epidote, particularly in the form of unakite, and precious or semiprecious varieties of the related mineral zoisite, including thulite and tanzanite, some which have inclusions that allow them to be cut into popular catseyes. This informative book provides all presently known species, detailed entries for each of the eighteen minerals, and extensive locality information. This book will be of interest to those interested in developing a better understanding of silicate minerals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeolites form a family of minerals which have been known since the 18th century, but they remained a curiosity for scientists and collectors until 60 years ago, when their unique physicochemical properties attracted the attention of many researchers. In the past 30 years there has been an ex traordinary development in zeolite science; six International Conferences on Zeolites have been held every 3 years since 1967, and a large number of interesting contributions have been published in their proceedings. Many books, written either by individual authors or by several authors under a leading editor, have been published on these interesting silicate phases, but none has been devoted specifically to natural zeolites, even though this theme may be of interest not only to earth scientists, but also to chemists, as the in formation obtained from natural samples completes and in tegrates the characterization of many zeolites. We are trying to fill this gap on the basis of 20 years of research on natural zeolites, which we performed at the University of Modena together with many friends and colleagues. If it is in general difficult to write a scientific book with out upsetting somebody, this is particularly true for a book on natural crystals, because mineralogy is an interdisciplin ary science which covers some fields of physics, chemistry, it is almost impossible to meet every petrology, geology, and requirement.

  • ISBN : 150150911X
  • Pages : 668 pages

Download or read book Natural Zeolites written by David L. Bish and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 45 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry is a new and expanded update of Volume 4 from 1977. Most of the material in this volume is entirely new, and Natural Zeolites: Occurrence, Properties, Applications presents a fresh and expanded look at many of the subjects contained in Volume 4. There has been an explosion in our knowledge of the crystal chemistry and structures of natural zeolites (Chapters 1 and 2), due in part to the now-common Rietveld method that allows treatment of powder diffraction data. Studies on the geochemistry of natural zeolites have also greatly increased, partly as a result of the interests related to the disposal of radioactive wastes, and Chapters 3, 4, 5, 13, and 14 detail the latest results in this important area. Until the latter part of the 20th century, zeolites were often looked upon as a geological curiosity, but they are now known to be widespread throughout the world in sedimentary and igneous deposits and in soils (Chapters 6-12). The application of natural zeolites has greatly expanded since the first zeolite volume. Chapter 15 details the use of natural zeolites for removal of ammonium ions, heavy metals, radioactive cations, and organic molecules from natural waters, wastewaters, and soils. Similarly, Chapter 16 describes the use of natural zeolites as building blocks and cements in the building industry, Chapter 17 outlines their use in solar energy storage, heating, and cooling applications, and Chapter 18 describes their use in a variety of agricultural applications, including as soil conditioners, slow-release fertilizers, soil-less substrates, carriers for insecticides and pesticides, and remediation agents in contaminated soils.
