Buckminster Fuller Why Call It Collective Ownership Based Economy (COBE) The economic model proposed in this book resembles the existing models of socialist economic systems a lot. It can be called anything. However, the term "Collective Ownership Based Economy" is chosen because 'collective ownership' is the central tenet of the proposed economic model. The model is aimed mainly at eliminating the drawbacks of capitalism, the current economic system existing all over the world, so that all people would be free of economic insecurity and enjoy prosperity, peace, and happiness. Socialist economies are almost globally misunderstood and misrepresented and are presently associated with stigma and very low popularity. The main reason for this is that the socialism of "communist" nations of past and present has been administered not through democracy but dictatorship. The dictators of these nations were/are exploiting the imperfections of communism propounded by Karl Marx, a brilliant social scientist of his times. Democracy was not Karl Marx's strong point--he suggested "dictatorship of the proletariat (workers)." The proposed new economic order, COBE, presumes that democracy is not only an inseparable part of the economic system but also has a crucial facilitative role before and during the transition from the current capitalist model to COBE. The central tenet of the proposed economic system is collective ownership of the wealth of the society by all its members as opposed to private ownership, which is the central feature of capitalism. Collective ownership of the wealth, to be sure, is also the tenet of the World Socialist Movement (WSM), The Venus Project (TVP), and The Zeitgeist Movement (TZM). However, unlike the proposed COBE in this book, (1) TVP and TZM don't endorse democracy, (2) WSM and TVP believe that the new economic order cannot be established in isolation in a single country and that it has to be done globally when all the countries accept it, and (3) TVP believes that capitalism will eventually collapse on its own. Collective ownership of wealth means that the whole society would exist as a single economic unit as opposed to the current capitalist model, wherein it exists as multiple (millions of) economic units. The COBE model, therefore, would provide huge benefits in terms of attaining material abundance and enhancement of leisure for people. This benefit is because of economies of scale, which is the most fundamental economic principle, though not pointed out hitherto by any of the advocates of socialist or socialist like economic models. How have humans evolved to end up with the current economic system--capitalism? How, by replacing the current capitalist system with the proposed COBE, would the society achieve material abundance, enhancement of human leisure, economic emancipation, sexual emancipation, elimination of greed, rivalry, envy, hatred, superstitions, political corruption, crime, war, economic burdens on the heads of the family, and so on; restore ecological balance; establish world society; and so on? Find, in this book, the answers to these and more questions; and an action plan to establish COBE.

Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

They trace the lengthy evolution of economic ideas of property reform under communism leading from the doctrine of blanket nationalization to projects of moderate privatization in eight countries of Eastern Europe and China. The comparative analysis sheds light upon the tireless attempts of reform-minded economists in communist countries to populate the no man’s land of “social property” with quasi-private economic actors such as bodies of workers’ self-management and managers of state-owned companies. For a long time, these were expected to crowd out the communist nomenklatura from its actual ownership position without challenging the primacy of collective property rights. The fact that even the most radical reformers came to the conclusion that such surrogate owners would not be able to break the power of the ruling elite only on the eve of the 1989 revolutions demonstrates the immense strength of collectivist ideas. The authors coin the term “trap of collectivism” to warn those demanding nationalization or other forms of non-private ownership today: it is rather easy, even with the best intentions, to walk into this trap but it may take long decades to break out from it.

Yet capitalism is not on its deathbed, utopia is not in our future, and revolution is not in the cards. In Capitalism on Edge, Albena Azmanova demonstrates that radical progressive change is still attainable, but it must come from an unexpected direction. Azmanova’s new critique of capitalism focuses on the competitive pursuit of profit rather than on forms of ownership and patterns of wealth distribution. She contends that neoliberal capitalism has mutated into a new form—precarity capitalism—marked by the emergence of a precarious multitude.
