Book Collective Dynamics of High Brightness Electron Beam Compression and Manipulation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High brightness electron beams have revolutionized accelerator science and enabled a large range of high impact applications such as X-ray free electron lasers(XFEL), inverse Compton-scattering, plasma wakefield accelerators and future linear colliders. In pursue of higher beam brightness, collective effects become key limiting factors. Those collective effects happen during the beam generation, acceleration, compression and transport, including coherent synchrotron radiation, space charge and resistive wall wakefields. As people are entering the new parameter regime -- such as the generation of ultra-short electron bunches or ultra-high peak current -- collective effects can play a dominant role and classical theories of wakefield can break down. In this work we describe our efforts in understanding and controlling the collective dynamics of high-brightness electron beams. In the first half of the thesis, we focus on one of the most challenging beam dynamics problems in accelerator physics -- coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and introduce a novel computational model of 2D/3D CSR in relativistic beams. The model achieves both accurate and efficient simulations of CSR in the regime that conventional 1D models become invalid, which can be crucial for the design of next generation accelerators. In the second half, we switch gear to techniques that enable better control of the collective effects. Specifically we examine laser shaping techniques both in spatial and temporal domains as a powerful beam manipulation tool. We first discuss in detail the numerical and experimental studies using Laguerre-Gaussian mode laser in the laser heater to improve the microbunching instability suppression in XFEL drivers. Then we introduce temporal laser shaping to achieve flexible longitudinal phase space manipulation and apply it as an active out-coupling method for cavity-based free-electron lasers.

Book Collective Dynamics and Coherent Diagnostics of Microbunched Relativistic Electron Beams

Download or read book Collective Dynamics and Coherent Diagnostics of Microbunched Relativistic Electron Beams written by Agostino Marinelli and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The x-ray free-electron laser has established itself as the brightest available source of x-rays, extending the coherence and brilliance properties of conventional atomic lasers down to the sub-Angstrom level. The high-brightness electron beams that are used to drive the free-electron laser process, undergo a number of collective instabilities that can generate complex phase-space structures and induce the emission of coherent radiation, an effect that is generally termed microbunching instability. The main subject of this dissertation is the collective evolution of beam mi- crobunching under the effect of longitudinal space-charge forces. We develop a three-dimensional kinetic theory of space-charge effects leading to collective suppression and amplification of beam microbunching. This model gives, for the first time, a fully self-consistent description of the space-charge instability, with the inclusion of three-dimensional and thermal effects. After establishing a self-consistent theoretical foundation for space-charge effects, we present two experiments related to the space-charge instability. The generation of broad- band coherent undulator radiation with a longitudinal space-charge amplifier is demonstrated experimentally for the first time. This experiment extends the capabilities of free-electron laser facilities by allowing the generation of coherent broadband radiation pulses, thus accessing regimes of operation currently unavailable for fourth generation light sources. Finally a coherent diffraction imaging technique for the reconstruction of beam microbunching is designed and experimentally tested. This technique is based on the application of an oversampling phase-retrieval method to the far-field coherent transition radiation emitted by a microbunched electron beam and has applications in the diagnostic of compressed electron beams and free-electron lasers. While the microbunching instability is generally regarded as a detrimental effect, this work shows that the coherent effects associated with the induced microbunching can be optimized and used to our advantage for the development of new coherent radiation sources and advanced beam diagnostics.

This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of proceedings is an up-to-date review of the advances made in the past two decades on the production, control and exploitation of bright electron and light beams for science — in particular, innovative manipulation and control, in linear and circular accelerators, of high brightness charged particle beams. In the conceptual, theoretical and experimental framework of nonlinear beam dynamics and collective cooperative effects, the book provides an update of the state-of-the-art theoretical formulations, techniques and technologies, innovative concepts and scientific results obtained at existing accelerator facilities. Challenges and solutions, proposed or implemented, for the operation of third and fourth generation storage rings as synchrotron radiation sources and circular colliders for high energy particle physics, as well as radiofrequency linear accelerators for Compton/Thomson scattering-based light sources and free electron lasers, are reviewed and discussed. The complementarity between single-pass and recirculating light sources in energy, timing and spectral operational modes also emerges.

Book Physics Of Intense Charged Particle Beams In High Energy Accelerators

Download or read book Physics Of Intense Charged Particle Beams In High Energy Accelerators written by Ronald C Davidson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators is a graduate-level text — complete with 75 assigned problems — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of intense charged particle beams in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge and intense self-field effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties, and is valid over a wide range of system parameters ranging from moderate-intensity, moderate-emittance beams to very-high-intensity, low-emittance beams. This is particularly important at the high beam intensities envisioned for present and next generation accelerators, colliders and transport systems for high energy and nuclear physics applications and for heavy ion fusion. The statistical models used to describe the properties of intense charged particle beams are based on the Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate, and extensive use is made of theoretical techniques developed in the description of one-component nonneutral plasmas, and multispecies electrically-neutral plasmas, as well as established techniques in accelerator physics, classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical physics.Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators emphasizes basic physics principles, and the thorough presentation style is intended to have a lasting appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Because of the advanced theoretical techniques developed for describing one-component charged particle systems, a useful companion volume to this book is Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas by Ronald C Davidson./a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of high energy accelerators began in 1911, when Rutherford discovered the atomic nuclei inside the atom. Since then, progress has been made in the following: (1) development of high voltage dc and rf accelerators, (2) achievement of high field magnets with excellent field quality, (3) discovery of transverse and longitudinal beam focusing principles, (4) invention of high power rf sources, (5) improvement of high vacuum technology, (6) attainment of high brightness (polarized/unpolarized) electron/ion sources, (7) advancement of beam dynamics and beam manipulation schemes, such as beam injection, accumulation, slow and fast extraction, beam damping and beam cooling, instability feedback, etc. The impacts of the accelerator development are evidenced by the many ground-breaking discoveries in particle and nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, biomedical physics, medicine, biology, and industrial processing. This book is intended to be used as a graduate or senior undergraduate textbook in accelerator physics and science. It can be used as preparatory course material for graduate accelerator physics students doing thesis research. The text covers historical accelerator development, transverse betatron motion, synchrotron motion, an introduction to linear accelerators, and synchrotron radiation phenomena in low emittance electron storage rings, introduction to special topics such as the free electron laser and the beam-beam interaction. Attention is paid to derivation of the action-angle variables of the phase space, because the transformation is important for understanding advanced topics such as the collective instability and nonlinear beam dynamics. Each section is followed by exercises, which are designed to reinforce the concept discussed and to solve a realistic accelerator design problem.
