Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhode Island Historical Society Collections, Vol. 16: January, 1923 It requires error outgrown as well as truth comprehended to make a universe. Consequently, it will not be a waste of effort for us to examine what this locality has to offer. If there had been any genuine foundation for the rumors alluded to, it seems likely that Dr. Stiles must have heard of them, for he sought-indefatigably for inscriptions on rocks. His notes, we may be sure, record every instance which was brought to his attention, and he would certainly have visited every one that he could discover and would have made draw ings of it. In fact, he wrote in 1790: I have made great in quiry these 20 years past for similar inscriptions to those of the Dighton Rock.l Yet although he resided in Newport for twenty-one years, he gives no hint of there being any ancient records of the sort nearer than Portsmouth. He does, how ever, mention two that were made in 1728. Our own interest is principally in the older and more mysterious rock-carvings, rather than in these. Yet the fact that at least one white man followed the impulse to write upon such surfaces at so early a date is not without its bearing upon our interpretation of the more puzzling cases. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhode Island Historical Society Collections, Vol. 8: October, 1920 All the biographers of Williams have a strong tendency to make rash statements, without full knowledge of the facts, or to pad out meager facts by more or less harmless rhetoric. Perhaps the best is that by Strauss, though even Strauss is not very admirable in his treatment of the relations between Williams and Milton. Roger Williams is not by any means fully understood yet; and there seems to me to be room for some profitable work in compiling an adequate and really reliable life of this man, so important in American history and literature, and far more important in English seventeenth century history than is generally recognized. A few other interesting statements and conjectures are found, outside the biographies Of Williams and Milton. In the Introduction to Volume III of the Narragansett Club Publications, S. L. Caldwell makes a very sane statement in connection with the possibility of Williams' having known Milton in 1643-4, which is worth quoting 23 There is no evidence that Williams was then known to Milton, although the acquaintance may have then begun of which he writes as existing during his second visit to England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhode Island Historical Society Collections, Vol. 23 In examining records of the Superior and Supreme Courts of Bristol County recently, covering the period from 1740 on, we discovered a large number of suits for Trespass and Ejectment where the sum named in the ad damnum seemed unusually large, so large, in fact, that is raised the question as to how such an amount could be in volved in a suit of this nature at that period of the his tory of the state, especially as the description of the land in question would not seem to warrant the amount of money named. Often a house lot Of a quarter of an acre with a dwelling on it would carry an ad damnum of four or five thousand dollars.
