Book The Tenth Minnesota Volunteers 1862 1865

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War experience of the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment resembles that of few other regiments. On the day the 10th Minnesota first mustered at Fort Snelling in August 1862, the Sioux Indian War broke out in western Minnesota. Soldiers who signed up to fight the Confederacy instead found themselves marching to defend the frontier and spending a year fighting two campaigns against the Sioux. When the 10th finally deployed south to fight the Confederate Army, it engaged in a series of skirmishes in the West, including battles at Tupelo and Nashville, and suffered many casualties. This chronicle merges the individual experiences of Union soldiers, Native Americans, and Confederates to offer a compelling, panoramic portrait of the 10th Minnesota during the Sioux Uprising and the Civil War, revealing the unwavering resolve of this remarkable regiment.

Book Minnesota Physicians in the 1862 Sioux Uprising

Download or read book Minnesota Physicians in the 1862 Sioux Uprising written by Francis J. Haddy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written of the Sioux Uprising in Minnesota in August of 1862, but little has been written about the physicians who were caught up in it. This book is an attempt to correct the omission. There were seven major battles on the Minnesota River in 1862-Lower Sioux Agency, Redwood Ferry, Upper Sioux Agency, Fort Ridgley, New Ulm, Birch Coulee, and Wood Lake. Physicians were present at most of these sites. What happened to each of them is not well known. Their stories are well worth telling.

Book Schoolcraft s Expedition to Lake Itasca

Download or read book Schoolcraft s Expedition to Lake Itasca written by Philip P. Mason and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientist, explorer, historian, and Indian agent Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's name must be included in the pantheon of early nineteenth-century adventurers who were in the vanguard of American expansion into the heart of the continent. While some, individuals like William Clark, Meriwether Lewis, John C. Fremont, and Kit Carson did not stop until they reached the Pacific Ocean, others took it as their task to explore the cast, unknown interior; chief among this group was Henry Rowe Schoolcraft. Originally issued by Michigan State University Press in 1958, Schoolcraft's Expedition to Lake Itasca contains a semi-official report of his 1832 trip to the upper Mississippi region. His purposes for exploring the area, now part of Minnesota, were to quell a feud between warring Chippewa and Sioux factions and to locate the Mississippi headwaters. Although he did not stop the fighting, Schoolcraft did discover the river's true source and left us an unsurpassed account of life in the region in the 1830s. Anyone interested in the early white exploration of the upper Midwest should own a copy of this valuable resource.
