It is quite probable that we have here the earliest letters that passed between them; and we may conjecture, in the absence of more trustworthy information, that their acquaintance was made at the time Mr. Hazard was visit ing New Hampshire in the pursuit of materials for the great work he was engaged in, of which two volumes only were finally published, -the Historical Collections, in 1792 and 1794. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1902, Vol. 2 Letter Books, made at some indefinite time after the receipt of the letters. There is no reason to doubt the substantial accuracy of these 00pies; but it should be added that Trumbull's Copyist was very careless, especially with regard to the spelling of proper names, and it is only fair to infer that obvious errors of any kind are quite as likely to be due to him as to the writers, though many of the latter were illiterate persons, who wrote with no advantages of time or place. In printing, the spelling of the originals and of the copies in the Letter Books has been carefully followed, but the capitalization and the punctuation have been made to conform to mod ern usage. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, Vol. 2 Of the early life of Ephraim Williams we have little contemporary data. The records of the town of Newton, Massachusetts, where he was born in 1714, contain the usual family statistics. Aside from the rather meager information which they furnish, we are almost wholly dependent upon tradition. In this particular case that may be and probably is substantially trustworthy. The first sketch of Ephraim Williams appeared in the eighth volume of the Collections of the Massa chusetts Historical Society, nearly fifty years after his death. This sketch is supposed to have been written by President Fitch, of \villiams College, who doubtless gathered the materials for it from surviving con temporaries of Williams. He is. Described as a pleasant, likeable, public Spirited sort of man, with a taste for affairs. And no inconsiderab-le abil ity in the conduct of them. It has been thought that if he had survived the Bloody Morning Scout he might have become a coiispicuous figure in the Revolutionary war. Be this as it may, it was his destiny to win distinction in another field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Winthrop, Vol. 1: Governor of the Massachusetts-Bay Company at Their Emigration to New England, 1630 There is nothing in this volume which calls for any other preface than that which is supplied in the Introductory Chapter; but I am unwilling that it should go forth without a word of grateful acknowledgment to my valued friends, the Rev. Chandler Robbins, D. D., and Charles Deane, Esq., A. M., for the aid they have given me in preparing it for the press. I have also been indebted to Charles Francis Winthrop, Esq., of New York, to H. G. Somerby, Esq., and to W. H. Whitmore, Esq., for papers and references; and to Dr. John Appleton, the Assistant Librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society, for the preparation of the autographs and seals in the Appendix. Nor could I pardon myself for omitting the name of the late Francis B. Winthrop, of New London, from whom many of the most interesting materials of the volume were procured; and who has since fallen a victim to disease contracted while he was serving as a volunteer in the army of the American Union.
