Book excerpt: First published in 1988. The Theban private tombs form a major source for our knowledge of Egyptian society. Ostensibly a great amount of work has been done in the necropolis over the past one hundred and sixty years of its modern history, and the bibliography for this area is among the most extensive in Egyptology. Many of the 415 or so decorated tombs have received a full publication, but for a great number only selected scenes have been made available, and a surprising amount remains to all intents and purposes unpublished. The present study is concerned with a number of painted tombs of the Eighteenth dynasty which were visited by the early travellers, but the exact location of which is now unknown. The careful drawings and tracings made by these pioneers are apparently all that remains to show the appearance of these tombs. Some of the scenes represented are not found elsewhere in the necropolis, and others have special points of interest or unique details, linguistic, iconographic and religious, to offer. This very important material has not previously been used by scholars, and it has not been recognized that fragments of some of these vanished tombs can actually be traced to collections in museums and elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The first-of-its-kind exhibit cataloged here focuses on the women of Egypt from all levels of society in works compiled strictly from American collections by American curators. Because the quantity of written records is limited (though enormous in comparison to most early societies), there is still much guesswork involved in determining the place women held in Egyptian society. It is clear that, unlike most ancient and not-so-ancient societies, Egypt conferred on women the legal right to own property and to barter their own goods, which means a larger record for current study. The essays here are both erudite and fascinating to read; the illustrations are clear and well presented in conjunction with the text. 117 colour & 112 b/w illustrations

Book excerpt: With more than 55,000 objects, the Department of Egyptian Antiquities in the Louvre is one of the most splendid collections in the world. Of exceptional value and variety, it reveals the evolution of Pharaonic statuary and architecture as well as illustrating Egyptian funerary rites and everyday life in detail. The Department was the brainchild of Jean-François Champollion, the pioneer Egyptologist famous as the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphics. On his initiative the collection of 4,000 objects that had been amassed by the British consul, Salt, was bought by France and became the nucleus of the Louvre collections. When Champollion died in 1832, the Louvre already possessed more than 9,000 pieces. Since then, the collection has not ceased to expand, enriched by donations, purchases and excavation finds. The recent redesign allows a new original presentation: on the first floor, outstanding works allow the visitor to walk through 4,000 years of art history. On the groundfloor, a thematic presentation, unique in the Louvre, highlights and explains the principal aspects of pharaonic civilization. This book presents the key works exhibited in the Grand Louvre with an emphasis on daily life in ancient Egypt.
