Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Rocks: An Elementary Text-Book on Petrology Assistant Naturalist to the Geological Survey, for some interesting notes on his method of preparing microscopic sections of coal, and to Mr. J. B. Jordan, of the Mining Record Office, for the revision of the chapter on the preparation of microscopic sections, and for the use.of the wood-block representing the construction of his section-cutting machine. In the classification I have to some extent deviated from the systems commonly adopted; and, in the general treatment of the different subjects, original ideas and observations are more or less plentifully interwoven with the information derived from books. Book Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology

Download or read book Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology written by Swapan Kumar Haldar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology, second edition, presents the essentials of both disciplines through an approach accessible to industry professionals, academic researchers, and students alike. This new edition emphasizes the relationship between rocks and minerals, right from the structures created during rock formation through the economics of mineral deposits. While petrology is classified on the lines of geological evolution and rock formation, mineralogy speaks to the physical and chemical properties, uses, and global occurrences for each mineral, emphasizing the need for the growth of human development. The primary goal is for the reader to identify minerals in all respects, including host-rocks, and mineral deposits, with additional knowledge of mineral-exploration, resource, extraction, process, and ultimate use. To help provide a comprehensive analysis across ethical and socio-economic dimensions, a separate chapter describes the hazards associated with minerals, rocks, and mineral industries, and the consequences to humanity along with remedies and case studies. New to the second edition: includes coverage of minerals and petrology in extra-terrestrial environments as well as case studies on the hazards of the mining industry. Addresses the full scope of core concepts of mineralogy and petrology, including crystal structure, formation and grouping of minerals and soils, definition, origin, structure and classification of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks Features more than 250 figures, illustrations and color photographs to vividly explore the fundamental principles of mineralogy and petrology Offers a holistic approach to both subjects, beginning with the formation of geologic structures that is followed by the hosting of mineral deposits and the exploration and extraction of lucrative, usable products that improve the health of global economies Includes new content on minerals and petrology in extraterrestrial environments and case studies on hazards in the mining industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Collections: Dynamical Geology and Petrography This volume is a Guide to the illustrations of Dynamical Geology in the Vestibule and of Petrography, including both Lithology and Petrology, in Room B. Visitors and students are advised to follow the order of the explanatory text, beginning with the Vestibule and completing the study of the geological agencies before passing to the petrographic collections in Room B. A part only of the main floor of this room is devoted to Petrography, sections 24 to 31 and the gallery being reserved, provisionally, for illustrations of the local and New England geology. On entering Room B, the lithologic collection begins on the left hand, in section 1 of the wall-cases, and extends around the room to section 23; while the two central or floor-cases contain the petrologic collection, with the exception of some of the larger illustrations, which are in the table-cases and in the Vestibule. The numbers on the doors of the cases indicate the sections, and, to facilitate reference to the text of the Guide, corresponding numbers have been placed at the head of each page. The numbers printed in small type in the upper left hand corner of the labels, on the specimen tablets, refer to the Society's general written catalogue, which, however, contains no information not already given on the labels or in the following pages. The numbers corresponding to those by which the specimens are designated in the text are printed in larger type on small rectangles of paper which are either attached directly to the tablet or to the label. These numbers are also made more conspicuous in the Guide by being printed in black-faced type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Nomenclature of Petrology

Download or read book The Nomenclature of Petrology written by Arthur Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nomenclature of Petrology: With References to Selected Literature Some years ago I began the compilation of a card-catalogue of petrographic and associated terms, for the use of students in the Geological Department of the Imperial College of Science and Technology. Each card gave a brief description of the meaning (or meanings) of the term to which it was devoted, together with references to those papers on the subject which were available in the departmental library of the College, a library which, thanks to the collections made by the late Professor J. W. Judd and others, is unusually rich in author's separates. As the catalogue grew, its general usefulness became apparent; and a series of suggestions that it should be developed and published led me finally to the conclusion that such a course would not be unjustified. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Petrology: The Igneous Rocks A Little book that should briefly describe the mineral constituents and internal structures of the Igneous Rocks, their mode of occurrence at the surface and their origin beneath the crust of the earth, has long been a desideratum among English text-books of Science. With the view of filling this gap this little book has been prepared; and it is hoped that it will be found useful, not only as an introduction to the subject, but also as a handy work of reference. Book Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology

Download or read book Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology written by Anthony R. Philpotts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon the award-winning second edition, this comprehensive textbook provides a fundamental understanding of the formative processes of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Encouraging a deeper comprehension of the subject by explaining the petrologic principles, and assuming knowledge of only introductory college-level courses in physics, chemistry, and calculus, it lucidly outlines mathematical derivations fully and at an elementary level, making this the ideal resource for intermediate and advanced courses in igneous and metamorphic petrology. With over 500 illustrations, many in color, this revised edition contains valuable new material and strengthened pedagogy, including boxed mathematical derivations allowing for a more accessible explanation of concepts, and more qualitative end-of-chapter questions to encourage discussion. With a new introductory chapter outlining the “bigger picture,” this fully updated resource will guide students to an even greater mastery of petrology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the past century witnessed a remarkable paradigm shift in approach to the understanding of igneous rocks. Global literature records a change from a classical petrographic approach to emphasis on mineral chemistry, trace element characteristics, tectonic setting, phase relations, and theoretical simulation of magma generation and evolution processes. This book contains contributions by international experts in different fields of igneous petrology and presents an overview of recent developments. This book is dedicated to the late Dr Mihir K. Bose, former professor of the Department of Geology, Presidency College, Calcutta, India, who actively participated in the development of this new global view of igneous petrology.
