This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Problems in Illustration of the Principles of Elementary Mechanics In the composition of this work, my object has been to arrange in a systematic form a Collection of Mechanical Problems for the use of the higher Schools and Various Colleges of this Country, and especially for the service of those members of the University of Cambridge who are engaged in the study of the Elementary course of Mechanics, with which Candidates for Honours are expected to be familiar in the first three Days of the Examination for the Mathematical Tripos. In the Schedule of the subjects, as fixed by the Grace of the Senate for the regulation of the Examination of the Candidates during these three days, the range of Mechanical reading is limited to the following branches: - "The elementary parts if Statics, treated without the Differential Calculus; namely, the Composition and Resolution of Forces acting in one plane on a point, the Mechanical Powers, and the Properties of the Centre of Gravity." "The Elementary parts of Dynamics, treated without the Differential Calculus; namely, the Doctrine of Uniform and Uniformly accelerated Motion, of falling Bodies, Projectiles, Collision, and Cycloidal Oscillations." Download or read book The Principles of Mechanics Vol 1 written by Frederick Slate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: An Elementary Exposition, for Students of Physics The following chapters may be arranged in two groups, and the first of these (chapters I - V) is devoted continu ously to building up knowledge of the necessary concep tions, and unfolding their content. It is believed that such a plan will foster in students who use the book some quality of precision and method in statement, while it accustoms them to follow a sustained argument. If re sults like these are not attained by those who cultivate the science of Mechanics, the benefits of their study are but half reaped. The ninth and tenth chapters are given up mainly to auxiliary discussions on Centre of Mass, Moment of Inertia, and Dimensions; leaving three chap ters in that group (chapters VI - VIII) for the usual range of applications. This has been covered with a fair degree of thoroughness; and the problems constitute at the same time a collection of varied illustrations, by means of which the general principles can be elucidated and enforced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles Elementary Mechanics The demonstration of the formula for centrifugal force may appear to be unnecessarily lengthy, but I trust that the student will gain a clearer conception of the mode of action of the forces, and be better satisfied with the logic of the demonstration, by following the proof here given, than by certain of the shorter methods. The demonstra tion by some of the latter methods is defective, although the same result is reached by them. Book The Principles of Mechanics Vol 1

Download or read book The Principles of Mechanics Vol 1 written by Frederick Slate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: An Elementary Exposition, for Students of Physics The material contained in these chapters has taken on its present form gradually, by a process of recasting and sifting. The ideas guiding that process have been three: first, to select the subject-matter with close reference to the needs of college students; second, to bring the instruction into adjustment with the actual stage of their training; and, third, to aim continually at treating Mechanics as a system of organized thought, having a clearly recognizable culture value. The result has been maturing under the suggestive influences of repeated presentation to a class of junior grade in the University who have brought to their task a working knowledge of calculus and a good groundwork of experimental physics. The distinctive traits in this attempt to set forth connectedly the conceptions and methods of the science are reproduced from the informal lectures of the class-room, as delivered for several years past. Advantage has been taken, however, of the larger opportunity in writing for publication, to make at some points a completer and more systematic formulation of fundamental doctrine. The seventh chapter has been incorporated here from another course of instruction, in part, at least, because its problems afford exactly the illustration needed of the difference between mathematical and physical forces. Book The First Principles of Mechanics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Principles of Mechanics: With Historical and Practical Illustrations J ordanus's proof confessedly assumes that it requires the same force to raise a body up any vertical height as to raise a body smaller in any proportion up a vertical height greater in the same proportion, the bodies being supported an inclined planes. Such a proposition, if asserted in 1300, or even in 1564, must have been, I conceive, a mere guess; since it was not obviously connected with any self-evident principle or known truth. It was probably one of many conjectures, and till better reason was shewn, had no claim to attention, above the solution of the problem of the inclined plane recorded by Pappus. To speak of the principle of virtual velocities as assumed in this solution, is attributing to the author a detection of analogies of which it is highly unlikely that he had any ap prehension; and a generalisation which was not thought of till long afterwards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: Kinematics Thus we recognize matter in certain states which we call solid, liquid or gaseous. We distinguish also different kinds of matter, such as iron, wood, glass, water, air, etc., which we call substances. We also recognize limited portions of matter of definite shape and volume, such as a pebble, a rain-drop, a planet, etc., which we call material bodies. But what matter is in itself we do not know. Book The Theory of Machines

Download or read book The Theory of Machines written by Robert W. Angus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Machines: The Principles of Mechanism; Elementary Mechanics of Machines The present treatise dealing with the Principles of Mechanism and Mechanics of Machinery is the result of a number of years' experience in teaching the subjects and in practising engineering, and endeavors to deal with problems of fairly common occur rence. It is intended to cover the needs of the beginner in the study of the science of machinery, and also to take up a number of the advanced problems in mechanics. As the engineer uses the drafting board very freely in the solution of his problems, the author has devised graphical solu tions throughout, and only in a very few instances has he used formulae involving anything more than elementary trigonometry and algebra. The two or three cases involving the calculus may be omitted without detracting much from the usefulness of the book. The reader must remember that the book does not deal with machine design, and as the drawings have been made for the special purpose of illustrating the principles under discussion, the mechanical details have frequently been omitted, and in cer tain cases the proportions somewhat modified so as to make the constructions employed clearer.
