Download or read book Collection of Nebraska Pioneer Reminiscences Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Nebraska Pioneer Reminiscences This Book of Nebraska Pioneer Reminiscences is issued by the Daughters of the American Revolution of Nebraska, and dedicated to the daring, courageous, and intrepid men and women - the advance guard of our progress - who, carrying the torch of civilization, had a vision of the possibilities which now have become realities. To those who answered the call of the unknown we owe the duty of preserving the record of their adventures upon the vast prairies of "Nebraska the Mother of States." "In her horizons, limitless and vast Her plains that storm the senses like the sea." Reminiscence, recollection, personal experience - simple, true stories - this is the foundation of History. Rapidly the pioneer story-tellers are passing beyond recall, and the real story of the beginning of our great commonwealth must be told now. The memories of those pioneers, of their deeds of self sacrifice and devotion, of their ideals which are our inheritance, will inculcate patriotism in the children of the future; for they should realize the courage that subdued the wilderness. And "lest we forget," the heritage of this past is a sacred trust to the Daughters of the American Revolution of Nebraska. The invaluable assistance of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and the members of this Book Committee, Mrs. C. S. Paine and Mrs. D. S. Dalby, is most gratefully acknowledged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nebraska Territorial Pioneers' Association: Reminiscences and Proceedings I came to the territory of Nebraska with my parents in April, 1864, from the state of Kansas, where my father, Samuel W. McKesson, had been sent by the conference of the Evangelical church for the state of Iowa. My father was an itinerant preacher, and our moving anywhere was not specially for the purpose of settlement, but for the purpose of being as near and convenient to such religious charges and missionary work as might be laid out for him. During the two years previous to moving into the territory the field of his labor was largely marked out for him by a missionary department of the conference, and in this case was not confined to comity or statewide boundaries. And so, prior to our moving into the territory, father had made frequent circuits within its boundary. We moved to Arago, in Richardson county, on the banks of the Missouri river. It is not now an organized town, having been abandoned and its place taken by the town of Fargo. Altho the town was situated on the banks of the river, it had no ferryboat connection with the Missouri side of the river. The manufacturing industries were a brickyard, a shingle sawmill and a brewery. The town was quite prosperous and progressive. The bluffs had been dug down half for the cutting thru of streets, and the ravines were filled and leveled. Besides the manufactures and residences, many of them mute respectable wooden structures, the town supported a public school, an Evangelical church, a Catholic church and school, and several saloons. Not much of interest to me occurred during the first year of our residence at Arago. I remember seeing boats travel up and down the Missouri river and stop to load and unload their cargoes of merchandise and to let off and take on passengers. The names of some of these river boats were the "Denver," "St. Mary's," "St. Joseph," and "St. Louis." They were of various sizes, some side-wheelers, some stern-wheelers, some with single smokestacks and some with double smokestacks, bid all with fog horns whose noise was anything but musical. It was in this year also that I saw and tasted my first cherries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Stories of Nebraska Stories are the harp strings of history, transforming the past into melody and rhythm. The best stories live forever in the human mind. They greet us in the Latin, Teutonic, and Celtic tongues, surprise us in the ancient Greek, Arabic, and Hindoo literature, and astonish us in the rude folk tales of primitive peoples who have no written language. The demand for a good story is as wide, as unsatisfied, as human longing, and the search for a new one as difficult and elusive as the discovery of a new element in nature. The farmers had large ranches with immense flocks of cattle and sheep, and plenty of slaves to take care of them. In some places the wolves were so plentiful in the mountains that they had to gather the cattle in large flocks in the evening and kindle fires at certain distances, with slaves keeping up the fires all night to save the cattle from the wolves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Stories: Of Furnas County, Nebraska Fifty years is a short span in the life of Nations and of States, but it marks more than the average length of man's life. Nebraska is young in years as the age of Nations and States is counted, and it seems fitting that in her comparative youth her history be written in large part by the men and women who have made that history. Fortunately there yet remain upon the scene of action many of these pioneer men and women - men and women who braved the dangers of the wilderness, and who through dark days and bright days, through storm and sunshine, through privation and prosperity, have kept their faith and have lived to see the fruition of their hopes. They found Nebraska a barren wilderness; they are leaving it as fruitful as a garden. They endured privation almost unspeakable, yet never faltered. And today they may point with pride to the work they have accomplished, to the state they have builded. Two years ago I conceived the idea of having these pioneers write the stories of their early days in Nebraska. The idea met with a ready response - and this volume is the result. Originally the intention was merely to publish the sketches in the Beaver City Times-Tribune, but as the series continued many requests came in that it be published in more convenient and permanent form. Accordingly I have gathered them into this book. My earnest hope is that these stories of the Pioneers, written by themselves, may become an indelible part of the written history of Nebraska. To those who have contributed these sketches I return my grateful thanks, and I believe I also voice the thanks of every citizen of Furnas county.
