Download or read book Sitting at the Feet of Gurus written by Deena Burton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deena Burton is well known for her accomplishments as a dancer, choreographer, producer, and scholar of Indonesian Arts. In the course of her research she came across the pioneering work of Claire Holt, who had written about art and culture in New York and Europe, especially the rise of Modern Dance, between the fi rst and second World Wars. During a trip to Indonesia in 1930 Claire Holt became enamored of Javanese dance. She stayed for many years, on and off, and was among the community of artists and anthropologists living in Bali at that time including Walter Spies, Colin McPhee, Miguel Covarrubias, Margaret Mead and others who were both deeply infl uenced by this ancient culture and obsessive in documenting Indonesias emergence into the 20th century. This book, which began as Deenas PhD dissertation, is a tribute to her own dedication and that of a kindred spirit - Claire Holt and their love for the arts and peoples of Indonesia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive multimedia resource for the study of Chinese culture through dance As China becomes increasingly important in world relations, many components of the country's cultural arts remain unknown outside its borders. Shih-Ming Li Chang and Lynn E. Frederiksen's Chinese Dance: In the Vast Land and Beyond undertakes the challenge of discovering the relationship between Chinese dance in its many forms and the cultural contexts of dance within the region and abroad. As a comprehensive resource, Chinese Dance offers students and scholars an invaluable introduction to the subject. It serves as a foundation of common knowledge from which Chinese and English-language communities can begin a cross-cultural conversation about Chinese dance. The text, along with a comprehensive glossary of key terms, gives English-language readers a chance to understand the development of Chinese dance as it is officially articulated by historians and dance scholars in Asia. An online database of video clips, an extensive bibliography, and Web-based appendices provide a broad collection of primary source materials that invite interactive and flexible engagement by a range of users. The inclusion of interviews with Chinese dance practitioners in North America offers a view into the Asian diaspora experience.

Download or read book Dance History written by Janet Adshead-Lansdale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983 the first edition rapidly established itself as a core student text. Now fully revised and up-dated it remains the only book to address the rationale, process, techniques and methodologies specific to the study of dance history. For the main body of the text which covers historical studies of dance in its traditional and performance contexts, the editors have brought together a team of internationally known dance historians. Roger Copeland and Deborah Jowitt each take a controversial look at the modern American dance. Kenneth Archer and Millicent Hodson explain the processes they use when reconstructing 'lost' ballets, and Theresa Buckland and Georgina Gore write on traditional dance in England and West Africa respectively. With other contributions on social dance, ballet, early European modern dance and feminist perspectives on dance history this book offers a multitude of starting points for studying dance history as well as presenting examples of dance writing at its very best. Dance History will be an essential purchase for all students of dance.
