This was due to the implementation of new strategic plans of the fascist command. Still at a meeting at the headquarters of the army group "South", held on June 1, 1942, Hitler declared: "If I don't get the oil from Maikop and Grozny, I will have to put an end to this war"1. Accordingly, the offensive of the Nazi troops, which began in late June, already in July marked a real threat of occupation North Caucasus. After the capture on July 24 of Rostov-on-Don - "the gate Caucasus" - they launched active offensive operations against two directions - to Stalingrad and the Caucasus. From the end of July 1942 hostilities unfolded already on the territory of the Krasnodar edge, and a month later the Nazis managed to reach the passes of the Main Caucasian ridge. In general, the events of the summer of 1942 became a real disaster for the Red Army. The pace of her retreat at that time was comparable only to the most difficult times of 1941. In total, in the summer-autumn campaign of 1942, 4 million people were out of order.

So punishing was life in these units that officers in regular formations threatened to send recalcitrant troops to penal battalions. Alexander Pyl'cyn led his penal unit through the Soviets' massive offensive in the summer of 1944, the Vistula-Oder operation into eastern Germany, and the bitter assault on Berlin in 1945. He survived the war, but 80 percent of his men did not.

This volume is about the explosion of the politics of memory triggered by the fall of state socialism in Eastern Europe, particularly about the politics of its commemoration twenty years later. It offers seventeen in-depth case studies, an original theoretical framework, and a comparative study of memory regime types and their origins. Four different kinds of mnemonic actors are identified: mnemonic warriors, mnemonic pluralists, mnemonic abnegators, and mnemonic prospectives. Their combinations render three different types of memory regimes: fractured, pillarized, and unified. Disciplined comparative analysis shows how several different configurations of factors affect the emergence of mnemonic actors and different varieties of memory regimes. There are three groups of causal factors that influence the political form of the memory regime: the range of structural constraints the actors face (e.g., the type of regime transformation), cultural constraints linked to past political conflict (e.g., salient ethnic or religious cleavages), and cultural and strategic choices actors make (e.g. framing post-communist political identities)"--
