Book Oil Palm Elaeis Guineensis Collections in Africa

Download or read book Oil Palm Elaeis Guineensis Collections in Africa written by N. Rajanaidu and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper outlines the oil palm genetic collections made by PORIM in Nigeria, Cameroon and Zaire. a total of 919 (595 duras and 324 teneras) samples in Nigeria, 95 (58 duras + 37 teneras) samples in Cameroons and 369 (283 duras + 86 teneras) samples in Zaire were collected during the plant exploration expeditions to these countries. The mean bunch and fruit weight of Zaire material is higher than those of Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroons but the duras and teneras of Nigerian genetic material had higher level of mesocarp (%). It is a matter of some urgency to organise an expedition to Angola to collect oil palm genetic material in the natural palm groves under the auspices of IBPGR/FAO. The genus Elaeis comparised of three species, E. guineensis Jacq, E. oleifera and E. odora (Barcella odora) (Wessels Boer, 1965; Moore 1973). E.guineensis is the most important of these species economically. [Author's abstract].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles the fundamental advances resulting from of oil-palm genome and transcriptome sequencing, and describes the challenges faced and strategies applied in sequencing, assembling and annotating oil palm genome sequences. The availability of genome and transcriptome data has made the mining of a high number of new molecular markers useful for genetic diversity as well as marker-trait association studies and the book presents high-throughput genotyping platforms, which allow the detection of QTL regions associated with interesting oil palm traits such as oil unsaturation and yield components using classical genetic and association mapping approaches. Lastly, it also presents the discovery of major genes governing economically important traits of the oil palm. Covering the history of oil palm expansion, classical and molecular cytogenetics, improvements based on wild and advanced genetic materials, and the science of oil palm breeding, the book is a valuable resource for scientists involved in plant genetic research.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts so far made on indigenous collections of oil palm genetic material in Nigeria are summarised. Information on phenotypic variation as well as frequency of occurrence of different types has been gathered. Detailed studies were made on vegetative characters, flowering and yield pattern as well as on bunch characters on 276 dura and 121 tenera palms belonging to 27 progenies collected from Benue, Bendel, Cross River and Imo States. Precocity studies made on 5,871 progenies from seven States showed that 14% of the palms produced above 15 female inflorescences, 21 months after planting.

Book Oil Palm Breeding

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aik Chin Soh
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2017-08-14
  • ISBN : 1351646044
  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Oil Palm Breeding written by Aik Chin Soh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil palm is a remarkable crop, producing around 40% of the world’s vegetable oil from around 6% of the land devoted to oil crops. Conventional breeding has clearly been the major focus of genetic improvement in this crop. A mix of improved agronomy and management, coupled with breeding selection have quadrupled the oil yield of the crop since breeding began in earnest in the 1920s. However, as for all perennial crops with long breeding cycles, oil palm faces immense challenges in the coming years with increased pressure from population growth, climate change and the need to develop environmentally sustainable oil palm plantations. In Oil Palm: Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, world leading organizations and individuals who have been at the forefront of developments in this crop, provide their insights and experiences of oil palm research, while examining the different challenges that face the future of the oil palm. The editors have all been involved in research and breeding of oil palm for many years and use their knowledge of the crop and their disciplinary expertise to provide context and to introduce the different research topics covered.

Book Social impacts of oil palm in Indonesia

Download or read book Social impacts of oil palm in Indonesia written by Tania Murray Li and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil palm plantations and smallholdings are expanding massively in Indonesia. Proponents highlight the potential for job creation and poverty alleviation, but scholars are more cautious, noting that social impacts of oil palm are not well understood. This report draws upon primary research in West Kalimantan to explore the gendered dynamics of oil palm among smallholders and plantation workers. It concludes that the social and economic benefits of oil palm are real, but restricted to particular social groups. Among smallholders in the research area, couples who were able to sustain diverse farming systems and add oil palm to their repertoire benefited more than transmigrants, who had to survive on limited incomes from a 2-ha plot.

Book Palms of controversies

  • Author : Alain Rival
  • Publisher : CIFOR

  • ISBN : 6021504410
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Palms of controversies written by Alain Rival and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of oil palm cultivation feeds many social issues such as biodiversity, deforestation, food habits or ethical investments. How can this palm be viewed as a ‘miracle plant’ by both the agro-food industry in the North and farmers in the tropical zone, but a serious ecological threat by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for the environment or rights of local indigenous peoples? In the present book the authors – a biologist and an agricultural economist- describe a global and complex tropical sector, for which the interests of the many different stakeholders are often antagonistic. Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. Indeed, palm oil is produced and consumed in the South; its trade is driven by emerging countries, although the major part of its transformations is made in the North that still hosts the largest multinational agro industries. It is also in the North that the sector is challenged on ethical and environmental issues. Public controversy over palm oil is often opinionated and it is fed by definitive and sometimes exaggerated statements. Researchers are conveying a more nuanced speech, which is supported by scientific data and a shared field experience. Their work helps in building a more balanced view, moving attention to the South, the region of exclusive production and major consumption of palm oil.
