Five museums were built on this site between 1824 and 1930 to house archaeological treasures and art collections. The last of the five to be built was the Pergamon Museum, which was designed by Alfred Messel and houses spectacular works of architectural antiquities, including collections of Assyrian, Far Eastern, Greek and Islamic art. Highlights include the Pergamon Altar, with a 394 foot frieze, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate from Babylon.

Book Cypriote Antiquities in Berlin in the Focus of New Research

Download or read book Cypriote Antiquities in Berlin in the Focus of New Research written by Vassos Karageorghis and published by . This book was released on 2014-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2013 a conference took place in Berlin organized by the Cypriot-German Cultural Association on the occasion of its 35th anniversary. The event – presented in close collaboration with the Collection of Classical Antiquities of the State Museums in Berlin (Antikensammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) – was prompted by the reorganization of the Neues Museum, which comprises a magnificent gallery of Cypriote antiquities. Most of the Cypriote objects kept in Berlin were published with short entries in the collection’s catalogue which appeared in English and in German in 2001 and 2002 respectively. The conference, however, provided a platform for a number of scholars to present their recent studies on some of the Cypriote objects of the Berlin Museums – objects ranging from the Late Bronze Age until the Hellenistic period, such as an exceptional vessel with animal protome, an elaborate bronze stand, vases of the Pictorial Style, finds from the ›Royal Cemetery‹ of Tamassos and the necropoleis of Marion and examples of funerary and votive sculpture made of limestone and terracotta.0The book contains papers by Vassos Karageorghis, Gabriele Koiner, Viola Lewandowski, Hartmut Matthäus, Robert S. Merrillees, George Papasavvas, Elena Poyiadji-Richter, Sabine Rogge & Eftychia Zachariou-Kaila, Andreas Scholl and Reinhard Senff.

Book excerpt: In order to understand our past, we need to understand ourselves as archaeologists and our discipline. This volume presents recent research into collecting practices of European Antiquities by national museums, institutes and individuals during the 19th and early 20th-century, and the 'Ancient Europe' collections that resulted and remain in many museums.This was the period during which the archaeological discipline developed as a scientific field, and the study of the archaeological paradigmatic and practical discourse of the past two centuries is therefore of importance, as are the sequence of key discoveries that shaped our field.Many national museums arose in the early 19th century and strived to acquire archaeological objects from a wide range of countries, dating from Prehistory to the Medieval period. This was done by buying, sometimes complete collections, exchanging or copying. The networks along which these objects traveled were made up out of the ranks of diplomats, aristocracy, politicians, clergymen, military officials and scholars. There were also intensive contacts between museums and universities and there were very active private dealers.The reasons for collecting antiquities were manifold. Many, however, started out from the idea of composing impressive collections brought together for patriotic or nationalistic purposes and for general comparative use. Later on, motives changed, and in the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities became more scientifically oriented. Eventually these collections fossilized, ending up in the depots. The times had changed and the acquisition of archaeological objects from other European countries largely came to an end.This group of papers researches these collections of 'Ancient Europe' from a variety of angles. As such it forms an ideal base for further researching archaeological museum collection history and the development of the archaeological discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsome newly designed addition to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s symposia series furthers the study of one of the most influential but less known periods of Greek art and culture. It is based on papers given at a two-day scholarly symposium held in conjunction with the award-winning exhibition “Pergamon and the Hellenistic Kingdoms of the Ancient World,” on view at the Metropolitan in 2016. The twenty diverse essays exemplify the international scope of the Hellenistic arts, which cover the three centuries between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. and the suicide of Cleopatra in 30 B.C. Subjects range from twenty-first century approaches to museum displays of archaeological material to the circulation of artists and works of art throughout the Mediterranean and the influence of Hellenistic art and its legacy in the ancient Roman world. Among the topics discussed are aspects of royal self-presentation and important elements of iconography and style in coins, gems, mosaics, sculpture, vessels, and wall paintings, in mediums including bronze, faience, glass, marble, silver, and terracotta. Authored by a number of internationally renowned scholars, the essays in this volume highlight the holdings of the Metropolitan and markedly demonstrate the artistic innovations and technical mastery of Hellenistic artists, offering new insights into the vitality and complexity of Hellenistic art. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book Classical Heritage and European Identities

Download or read book Classical Heritage and European Identities written by Lærke Maria Andersen Funder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Heritage and European Identities examines how the heritages of classical antiquity have been used to construct European identities, and especially the concept of citizenship, in Denmark from the eighteenth century to the present day. It implements a critical historiographical perspective in line with recent work on the "reception" of classical antiquity that has stressed the dialectic relationship between past, present and future. Arguing that the continuous employment and appropriation of lassical heritages in the Danish context constitutes an interesting case of an imagined geography that is simultaneously based on both national and European identities, the book shows how Denmark’s imagined geography is naturalized through very distinctive uses of classical heritages within the educational and heritage sectors. It does so by exploring three significant and interrelated arenas where the heritages of classical antiquity are used to shape Danes as European citizens. Together, these three cases emphasize different but interconnected ways in which classical heritages are being put to use in order to construct Denmark’s own distinctive national identity within Europe. Finally, the book also sheds light on some of the challenges that face unified and homogenous conceptions of European heritage and identity, as well as the notion of the "classical" itself. Classical Heritage and European Identities is the first English-language monograph to situate the Danish case within the wider European context. As such, the book should be essential reading for researchers and students engaged in the study of heritage and museums, classics, education and modern European history.
