Download or read book Recent Advances in Harmonic Analysis and Applications written by Dmitriy Bilyk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Harmonic Analysis and Applications features selected contributions from the AMS conference which took place at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro in 2011 in honor of Professor Konstantin Oskolkov's 65th birthday. The contributions are based on two special sessions, namely "Harmonic Analysis and Applications" and "Sparse Data Representations and Applications." Topics covered range from Banach space geometry to classical harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. Survey and expository articles by leading experts in their corresponding fields are included, and the volume also features selected high quality papers exploring new results and trends in Muckenhoupt-Sawyer theory, orthogonal polynomials, trigonometric series, approximation theory, Bellman functions and applications in differential equations. Graduate students and researchers in analysis will be particularly interested in the articles which emphasize remarkable connections between analysis and analytic number theory. The readers will learn about recent mathematical developments and directions for future work in the unexpected and surprising interaction between abstract problems in additive number theory and experimentally discovered optical phenomena in physics. This book will be useful for number theorists, harmonic analysts, algorithmists in multi-dimensional signal processing and experts in physics and partial differential equations.

Download or read book Contributions to Analysis written by Lars V. Ahlfors and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Analysis: A Collection of Papers Dedicated to Lipman Bers is a compendium of papers provided by Bers, friends, students, colleagues, and professors. These papers deal with Teichmuller spaces, Kleinian groups, theta functions, algebraic geometry. Other papers discuss quasiconformal mappings, function theory, differential equations, and differential topology. One paper discusses the results of the rigidity theorem of Mostow and its generalization by Marden in relation to geometric properties of Kleinian groups of the first kind. These results, obtained by planar methods, are presented in terms of the hyperbolic 3-space language, which is a natural pedestal in approaching the action of the Kleinian groups. Another paper reviews Riemann's vanishing theorem which solves the Jacobi inversion problem, by relating the vanishing properties of the theta function (particularly at half periods) to properties of certain linear series on the Riemann surface. One paper examines the problem of obtaining relations among the periods of the differentials of first kind on a compact Riemann surface. An application of a computer program involves supersonic transport. The program is based on the hodograph transformation and a method of complex characteristics to calculate profiles that are shock-less at a specified angle of attack, or at a specified subsonic free-stream Mach number. The collection can prove useful for engineers, statisticians, students, and professors in advance mathematics or courses related to aeronautics.

Download or read book ARNOLD Swimming Against the Tide written by Boris A. Khesin and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Arnold, an eminent mathematician of our time, is known both for his mathematical results, which are many and prominent, and for his strong opinions, often expressed in an uncompromising and provoking manner. His dictum that "Mathematics is a part of physics where experiments are cheap" is well known. This book consists of two parts: selected articles by and an interview with Vladimir Arnold, and a collection of articles about him written by his friends, colleagues, and students. The book is generously illustrated by a large collection of photographs, some never before published. The book presents many a facet of this extraordinary mathematician and man, from his mathematical discoveries to his daredevil outdoor adventures.

Download or read book Number Theory written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1986-05-05 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for the student in mathematics. Its goal is to give a view of the theory of numbers, of the problems with which this theory deals, and of the methods that are used. We have avoided that style which gives a systematic development of the apparatus and have used instead a freer style, in which the problems and the methods of solution are closely interwoven. We start from concrete problems in number theory. General theories arise as tools for solving these problems. As a rule, these theories are developed sufficiently far so that the reader can see for himself their strength and beauty, and so that he learns to apply them. Most of the questions that are examined in this book are connected with the theory of diophantine equations - that is, with the theory of the solutions in integers of equations in several variables. However, we also consider questions of other types; for example, we derive the theorem of Dirichlet on prime numbers in arithmetic progressions and investigate the growth of the number of solutions of congruences.
