At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, a series of crises broke out after years of accumulated unrest, and uprisings against the regime erupted everywhere. The Yuan Dynasty was on the edge of collapse. Many separate regimes emerged all over the country. Eventually the Han and Dazhou regimes were overthrown by an insurrectionary army led by Zhu Yuanzhang, who proclaimed himself Emperor Nanjing in1368 and he gave his new dynasty the name 'Ming'. Over the following close on 300 years, the new dynasty would witness reunification and reconstruction in the early years, followed by economic and cultural prosperity in the Jiajing and Wanli eras, and political corruptions, internal disorder and foreign invasions in the latter period. The Ming Dynasty would represent a zenith of feudal society in Chinese history. The Ming Dynasty gained access to rich jade resources and jade ware became more diversified. The emphasis was on exquisite items of daily use, ornaments, and ornamental furnishings. The period also saw the development of porcelain making., building on the foundation of the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The Jingdezhen Kiln, built in the Five Dynasties, became the domestic centre of porcelain making. Over-glazed colour techniques experienced rapid development, with under-glaze blue and white porcelain became prominent. Calligraphy continued in the style of the Somng and Yuan Dynasties, but many new genres developed: 'Three Songs', 'Two Shens', 'Three Calligraphers of the Wu School', and the 'Four Masters'. Paintings in this period continued to develop with three different stages: 'imperial court decorative painting', and the 'Zhe school' and the 'Four Pillars of the Wu School; and 'Xieyi'. This book, the seventh in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics. A consensus has been reached in the community of Archaeology that the first manmade or synthetic glasses, based on archaeological findings, originated in the Middle East during the 5000-3000's BC. By contrast, the manufacturing technology of pottery and ceramics were well developed in ancient China. The earliest pottery and ceramics dates back to the Shang Dynasty - the Zhou Dynasty (1700 BC-770 BC), while the earliest ancient glass artifacts unearthed in China dates back to the Western Han Dynasty. Utilizing the state-of-the art analytical and spectroscopic methods, the recent findings demonstrate that China had already developed its own glassmaking technology at latest since 200 BC. There are two schools of viewpoint on the origin of ancient Chinese glass. The more common one believes that ancient Chinese glass originated from the import of glassmaking technology from the West as a result of Sino-West trade exchanges in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-25 AD). The other scientifically demonstrates that homemade ancient Chinese glass with unique domestic formula containing both PbO and BaO were made as early as in the Pre-Qin Period or even the Warring States Period (770 BC-221 BC), known as Yousha or Faience.This English version of the previously published Chinese book entitled Development History of Ancient Chinese Glass Technology is for universities and research institutes where various research and educational activities of ancient glass and history are conducted. With 18 chapters, the scope of this book covers very detailed information on scientifically based findings of ancient Chinese glass development and imports and influence of foreign glass products as well as influence of the foreign glass manufacturing processes through the trade exchanges along the Silk Road(s).

Covering an area of about 68 square kilometers, the Hepu Han Tombs is one of the largest-scale and best-preserved ancient tombs in China. In 2001, the remains of 1,056 grave mounds could be seen on the earth surface and it was estimated that almost 10,000 tombs still survived underground. In the last 60 years, over 1,200 tombs have been excavated at Hepu, with approximately 20,000 artefacts unearthed which include pottery, bronze, iron, gold and silver ware, jade, lacquer, glass and bead ornaments. Especially to deserve to be mentioned, a large amount of artefacts can be related to the Maritime Silk Road. From the 2nd century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., the Hepu Port served as the eastern starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, opening up trade and cultural exchange with countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and the Mediterranean world, which resulted in a vast maritime trade network between China and the West. And these artefacts provide important evidence about this route, which also confirm the records of Chinese official history books. Therefore, the Hepu Han Tombs is of great significance to the study of ancient Chinese history and cultural exchanges between China and the West.
