Download or read book Pushkin on Literature written by Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pushkin on Literature approaches Pushkin's literary accomplishment from a unique perspective: it focuses on Pushkin the critic, and on his fascination with the literary world that surrounded him. This is the only English-language edition of the complete set of Pushkin's critical writing, both on his own work and on the wide range of European literature -- Byron, Shakespeare, Voltaire, Milton -- which he read and studied, and Which so profoundly influenced his own writing. These extracts from Pushkin's letters, articles, and working notes provide a complete chronological record of the artist's literary evolution, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the poet's intellectual passions.

Download or read book The Reception of Jane Austen in Europe written by Anthony Mandal and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-10-13 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of international research provides a wide-ranging account of Jane Austen's reception across the length and breadth of Europe, from Russia and Finland in the North to Italy and Spain in the South. In historical terms, the survey ranges from the near-contemporary - since Austen's novels were available in French very soon after their original publication - to modern times, in those countries which for various reasons, linguistic, historical or ideological, have taken up the novels only in recent years. For many, Austen's novels are valued for their romantic content, as love stories, but increasingly they are being perceived as sophisticated, ironic narratives. In this, the quality of translation has been a significant factor and the many film and television adaptations have played an important part in establishing Austen's reputation amongst the public at large. It will be seen from this that across Europe Austen's 'reception history' is far from uniform and has been shaped by a complex of extra-literary forces.

Download or read book Amadis in English written by Helen Moore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about readers: readers reading, and readers writing. They are readers of all ages and from all ages: young and old, male and female, from Europe and the Americas. The book they are reading is the Spanish chivalric romance Amadís de Gaula, known in English as Amadis de Gaule. Famous throughout the sixteenth century as the pinnacle of its fictional genre, the cultural functions of Amadis were further elaborated by the publication of Cervantes's Don Quixote in 1605, in which Amadis features as Quixote's favourite book. Amadis thereby becomes, as the philosopher Ortega y Gasset terms it, 'enclosed' within the modern novel and part of the imaginative landscape of British reader-authors such Mary Shelley, Smollett, Keats, Southey, Scott, and Thackeray. Amadis in English ranges from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, demonstrating through this 'biography' of a book the deep cultural, intellectual, and political connections of English, French, and Spanish literature across five centuries. Simultaneously an ambitious work of transnational literary history and a new intervention in the history of reading, this study argues that romance is historically located, culturally responsive, and uniquely flexible in the re-creative possibilities it offers readers. By revealing this hitherto unexamined reading experience connecting readers of all backgrounds, Amadis in English also offers many new insights into the politicisation of literary history; the construction and misconstruction of literary relations between England, France, and Spain; the practice and pleasures of reading fiction; and the enduring power of imagination.

Download or read book English and Scottish Ballads Vol 1 8 written by Various Authors and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 1828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Child Ballads are traditional ballads from England and Scotland, collected and anthologized by Francis James Child during the second half of the 19th century. The collection contains examples from the 13th century onward. However, the majority of the ballads date to the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Although some have very ancient influences, only a handful can be definitively traced to before 1600. Child Ballads are heavier and darker than other ballads. The topics of the ballads are romance, enchantment, devotion, determination, obsession, jealousy, forbidden love, hallucination, the suppressed truth, supernatural experiences and deeds, half-human creatures, teenagers, family strife, the boldness of outlaws, authority, lust, death, karma, punishment, sin, morality, vanity, folly, dignity, nobility, and many others. They contain stories of national heroes like Robin Hood and mysterious creatures like elves and fairies.
