Book Speeches of Note

Download or read book Speeches of Note written by Shaun Usher and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller Letters of Note comes a collection of 75 of history's most interesting, profound, and sometimes unknown speeches from a range of scintillating personalities such as Frederick Douglass, Justin Trudeau, Albert Einstein, Meghan Markle, Barbara Jordan, and Ursula K. Le Guin. This thoughtfully curated and richly illustrated collection celebrates oratory old and new, highlighting speeches we know and admire, while also shining a light on profound drafts that were never delivered or have until now been forgotten. From George Bernard Shaw's warm and rousing toast to Albert Einstein in 1930 and the commencement address affectionately given to graduates at Long Island University by Kermit the Frog, to the chilling public announcement (that was thankfully never made) by President Richard Nixon should Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the moon, Speeches of Note honors the words and ideas of some of history’s most provocative and inspiring personages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With vivid insight and rousing examples, The President’s Speech takes apart America’s most important presidential addresses, phrase by phrase, and examines the pivotal, often familiar, and always potent language that presidents past used to mold public opinion. Author and speechwriter Edwin Vilade provides the framework for each speech, both within the context of its era and also as a point on a timeline of our country’s long history. Starting at George Washington’s Farewell Address and ending with George W. Bush’s Axis of Evil State of the Union speech, Vilade reveals the varied and often conflicting points of view that shaped the final famous words. Color facsimiles show actual edits, deletions, additions, and handwritten notes to illustrate how remarkable and forceful language was crafted, sometimes at the last minute, into enduring words made famous by their timing, context, delivery, and power, from the 1823 Monroe Doctrine to Ronald Reagan’s “tear down that wall, Mr. Gorbachev” speech at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, revealing political and social currents that frame these words for modern times.

Book Speeches and Addresses

Download or read book Speeches and Addresses written by Henry Winter Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses: Delivered in the Congress of the United States, and on Several Public Occasions The friends of the late Henry Winter Davis have though it due to his memory, and to the remembrance of the public service which he fulfilled both in the congress of the United States and before the people of Maryland, especially in behalf of emancipation, that all such adequate and proper account of it as could be had should be put into some convenient shape, and published, as a contribution to the history of the times, as well as constituting a suitable record of that service. To this end they have collected all the reports and accounts of the speeches and addresses delivered by him, and, upon examination of them, it was resolved to publish all such as were regularly and correctly reported, and which he had gathered or retained precisely as they were printed and as he left them, without correction and without omission, expect in two instances alone, where direct allusion by name was made to persons, which allusions they believe Mr. Davis would have omitted if he had lived to correct these speeches for the press. In these collection have also been included such documents and reports as were wholly written by him, although the course recommended in such papers was not adopted, or the measures or men condemned thereby were approved, by the party he supported or by the people to whom he appealed. For it has not been thought admissible to correct any part of the account, nor to withhold any part of it, unless by reason of an insufficient and inadequate report it was plainly no true record of what was said. Book The Price of Freedom

Download or read book The Price of Freedom written by Calvin Coolidge and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Of course it would be folly to argue that the people cannot make political mistakes. They can and do make grave mistakes. They know it, they pay the penalty, but compared with the mistakes which have been made by every kind of autocracy they are unimportant. Oftentimes the inconvenience and loss fall on the innocent. This is all a part of the price of freedom. Unless the people struggle to help themselves, no one else will or can help them. It is out of such struggle that there comes the strongest evidence of their true independence and nobility, and there is struck off a rough and incomplete economic justice, and there develops a strong and rugged national character. It represents a spirit for which there could be no substitute. It justifies the claim that they are worthy to be free.? Calvin Coolidge
