Download or read book Analytical Chemistry for Cultural Heritage written by Rocco Mazzeo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.
Download or read book Significance 2 0 written by Roslyn Russell and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The way Australians think and live is captured in our collections. These collections reflect Australians’ lives in myriad areas at different times in our development—they provide insights into our unique national spirit and values, and contribute to our ability to solve new problems in distinctively Australian ways. Just as Australians are spread across a vast land, so our collections are distributed across the nation. Understandably, many different ways have been created to identify and care for our collections, in response to their type, location, or available resources. Whether located in the country or the city, significant collections occur throughout Australia—often in surprising places. 'Significance 2.0: a guide to assessing the significance of collections' builds on the solid foundation laid by the first edition of Significance (2001) in defining an adaptable method for determining significance across all collections in Australia. Those who have been guided by this ‘significance method’ since 2001 report that this has translated into better decision-making about their collections in areas like preservation, physical and digital access, and funding support." - foreword.

Download or read book Raman Spectroscopy in the Undergraduate Curriculum written by Matthew Sonntag and published by ACS Symposium. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been nearly a century since Raman scattering was first experimentally observed. In current times, Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a versatile and powerful tool in a diverse set of scientific fields. Its implementation has grown markedly in the past 20 years due to technological advances and affordability of instrumentation. As such, more and more undergraduate institutions have acquired Raman instrumentation, and faculty from a variety of disciplines have begun to utilize the technique. This has resulted in an increased number of students gaining hands-on experience with Raman spectroscopy. As its use has grown, curricular pedagogies that utilize Raman spectroscopy to investigate interesting scientific problems have continually been developed, implemented, and publicized. Given the recent developments in the field and inspired by similar symposia on nuclear magnetic resonance and x-ray crystallography at recent ACS meetings, the editors developed a symposium titled "Engaging Undergraduates with Raman Spectroscopy." This symposium was held at the National ACS meeting held in Washington, D.C., in 2017. It generated strong interest, and the quality of presentation and breadth of knowledge displayed by the presenters was indicative of the continual pedagogical innovation of Raman spectroscopy in the undergraduate curriculum. The collection of chapters herein is based on the symposium, and several contributors to this book were its invited speakers. One of the main objectives of this volume is to convey the ideas discussed at the symposium to the broader scientific community. Our hope is that readers not only learn a great deal about the uses of Raman spectroscopy but also are stimulated to innovate new ways to incorporate Raman spectroscopy into the undergraduate curriculum.
Download or read book EJB Reviews written by P. Christen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s the European Journal of Biochemistry set out to publish review articles. The enterprise proved successful, resulting in high-level reviews written by well-known scientists appearing in the Journal. The reviews represent emerging and rapidly growing fields of research in fundamental as well as applied areas of biochemistry, such as medicine, biotechnology, agriculture and nutrition. Novel methodological and technological approaches which stimulate biochemical research are also included. The authors of the reviews are explicitly asked to be critical, selective, evaluative and interdisciplinary oriented. The reviews should encourage young scientists to think independently and creatively, and inform active investigators about the state of the art in a given field.

Download or read book Air Pollution And Health written by Jon G Ayres and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-09-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable volume, the third in the series Air Pollution Reviews, addresses particular questions relating to air pollution and its effect on health. It deals with the impact of nasal disease on lung exposure, how pollutants are distributed within the lung, and the uncertainties with regard to defining the dose to the lung. It takes a tangential look at the lung dose by exploring the possibility of obtaining clues from occupational medicine.Toxicologically, the book examines the possible methodology for exploring how particles and their toxicity can be investigated, and looks into the cardio-toxic effects of air pollution. The effects of pollutant mixtures are compared with those of individual pollutants. In addition, the question of the importance of acid aerosols is tackled.Epidemiologically, the book deals with the problems associated with point sources as opposed to diffuse sources of air pollution, and considers whether the health effects of air pollution can be adequately quantified. These areas, though difficult, need to be addressed, in order to develop our knowledge of the health effects of air pollution. In this volume, a strong panel of authors treat the issues. They have raised questions but at the same time succeeded in solving a number of problems.
