Book Collection and Preservation of Insects and Other Material for Use in the Study of Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Collection and Preservation of Insects and Other Material for Use in the Study of Agriculture Classic Reprint written by C. H. Lane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection and Preservation of Insects and Other Material for Use in the Study of Agriculture A large number of soil surveys have been made in the United States, and many of the schools are in areas where soil maps are available. The first thing to study is the scale - what the scale is, and what it means. The scale is given at the bottom of the map. Usually 1 inch represents a mile. Let the students measure the dis tance between two roads or between a house and the road about a mile away, or a bend in the road, measuring it on the map in inches and in the field in feet. Give them the number of feet to the mile, and let them check up the distance on the map and on the field. The next thing is direction. Soil maps always are drawn so that the upper edge is toward the north, and everything is drawn from this position. If there is a compass in the schoolhouse, put it on the map and turn the map until its edge is exactly in the direction of the compass needle. Make all observations with the map in this position. If there is no compass, select a distinct object on the map, such as a crossroads, church, or house, and place the map so that the direction from the school to the object on the map is in line with the same direction in the field. In making observations on the map always hold it in this position. Measure the distance along the line from the schoolhouse to a point in the road. Carry the map to that point, fix it in the original position, and see if the turn ln the road corresponds to the way it is drawn on the map. This gives an idea both of distance and of direction as platted on the map to represent actual conditions in the field. Book Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects

Download or read book Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects written by A. S. Packard Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects: Prepared for the Use of the Smithsonian Institution Wollaston (entomologist's Annual, 1805) states that sandy districts, especially towards the coast, are at all times prefer able to clayey ones, but the intermediate soils, such as the loamy soil of swamps and marshes, are more productive. Near the sea, insects occur most abundantly beneath pebbles and other objects in grassy spots, or else at the roots of plants. In many places, especially in alpine tracts, as we have found on the summit of Mt. Washington and in Labrador, one has to lie down and look carefully among the short herbage and in the moss for Coleoptera. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Among the Insects IF my young friends will peruse this book with half the pleasure I enjoyed whilst gathering the facts which it relates, I Shall be abundantly repaid for the labor expended in writing it. The air and fields are so full of beautiful and sprightly things of life that I shall not fail to confer a favor upon intelligent and inquisitive boys and girls if I succeed in inspiring them with an interest in the study of insect-life. The objects embraced in this study are within the reach of every one. They intrude themselves into our presence uncalled, and at times are most unwelcome. For this reason they are despised, and their structure, instincts and domestic habits are unstudied. But, like all the works of God, they display his wisdom and goodness, and are, on this account, worthy of the profoundest study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Directions for Collecting and Preserving Exotic Insects and Crustacea: Designed for the Use of Residents in Foreign Countries, Travellers, and Gentlemen Going Abroad; With Illustrative Plates The lively interest taken by the British Public in the promotion of every branch of science, and the numerous Collections of Objects of Natural History that are forming in every part of England, afford a convincing proof of the progress of this delightful study, and of the very general feeling manifested in its favour. If it should be asked whence this has arisen, we cannot but think that the intercourse with the Continent has, in a great measure, tended to awaken these feelings, and has naturally excited this laudable curiosity, and stimulated an inquiry into those works of the Creator which the most unenlightened cannot behold without admiration and delight. Thanks to their usually imposing size to their severe and irreproachably glossy garb to their short, stout, thickset Shape to the quaint ornamentation either of their brow or, also, of their thorax, they cut an excellent figure in the collector's boxes, especially when to our own species, oftenest of an ebon black, we add a few tropical species ashing with gleams of gold and ruddy copper. Book Insect Architecture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Architecture Classic Reprint written by James Rennie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Architecture If it be granted that making discoveries is one of the most satisfactory of human pleasures, then we may without hesitation affirm, that the study of insects is one of the most delightful branches of natural history, for it affords peculiar facilities for its pursuit. These facilities are found in the almost inexhaustible variety which insects present to the curious observer. As a proof of the extraordinary number of insects within a limited field of observation, Mr. Stephens informs us, that in the short space of forty days, between the middle of June and the beginning of August, he found, in the vicinity of Ripley, specimens of above two thousand four hundred species of insects exclusive of caterpillars and grubs, - a number amounting to nearly a fourth of the insects ascertained to be indigenous. He further tells us, that, among these specimens, although the ground had, in former seasons, been frequently explored, there were about one hundred species altogether new, and not before in any collection which he had inspected, including several new genera; while many insects reputed scarce were in con siderable plenty.* The localities of insects are, to a certain extent, constantly changing; and thus the study of them has, in this circumstance, as well as in their manifold abundance, a source of perpetual variety. Insects, also, which are plentiful one year, frequently become scarce, or disappear altogether, the next - a fact strikingly illustrated by the uncommon abundance, in 1826 and 1827, of the seven-spot lady-bird (coccz'nella septempunctata) in the vicinity of London, though during the two succeeding summers this insect was comparatively scarce, while the small two-spot lady-bird (coccz'nella, bzpunctata) was plentiful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Miscellanies IT was well said by the distinguished Danish natu ralist, Fabricius, that nothing in natural history is more abstruse and difficult than an accurate descrip tion of the senses of animals This inherent complexity of the subject appears to have induced Lehmann to undertake the investigation of the senses Of insects He collected into a focus all that was known previous to his time, though he has added very little from his own observation; but since that period much has been done by Marcel de Serres, Wollaston, Muller, and others. Book Manual of Fruit Insects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Fruit Insects Classic Reprint written by Mark Vernon Slingerland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Insects For nearly twenty years Professor Slingerland, as Assistant Entomologist of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, devoted the greater part of his time to studying the insect problems encountered by the fruit-growers of New York State. The results of some of these studies were published as bulletins of the Station, but a large amount of material remained unpublished. It was the idea of making this material available to other workers and at the same time bringing together in con nected form all the more important known facts concerning the insect enemies of our deciduous fruits, that led Professor Slinger land in the fall of 1908 to begin writing this book. During the few remaining months of his life he worked rapidly, and in spite Of failing health wrote accounts of more than one-half Of the apple insects and some others, mostly scale insects. After Professor Slingerland's death in March, 1909, I collected and preserved the manuscript, thinking that it might be possible to publish it without much additional work. While the treat ment of each insect was complete in itself, the Whole was so dis connected that this plan had to be abandoned. Accordingly, in the summer of 1910 I undertook the task of completing the book, following Professor Slingerland's outline. In doing so, I have made free use of his unpublished notes, and most of the illustra tions are from his photographs.
