Book DADA Surrealism and the Cinematic Effect

Download or read book DADA Surrealism and the Cinematic Effect written by R. Bruce Elder and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the early intellectual reception of the cinema and the manner in which art theorists, philosophers, cultural theorists, and especially artists of the first decades of the twentieth century responded to its advent. While the idea persists that early writers on film were troubled by the cinema’s lowly form, this work proposes that there was another, largely unrecognized, strain in the reception of it. Far from anxious about film’s provenance in popular entertainment, some writers and artists proclaimed that the cinema was the most important art for the moderns, as it exemplified the vibrancy of contemporary life. This view of the cinema was especially common among those whose commitments were to advanced artistic practices. Their notions about how to recast the art media (or the forms forged from those media’s materials) and the urgency of doing so formed the principal part of the conceptual core of the artistic programs advanced by the vanguard art movements of the first half of the twentieth century. This book, a companion to the author’s previous, Harmony & Dissent, examines the Dada and Surrealist movements as responses to the advent of the cinema.

Book The Selected Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony

Download or read book The Selected Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony written by Ann D. Gordon and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “hush” of the title comes suddenly, when first Elizabeth Cady Stanton dies on October 26, 1902, and three years later Susan B. Anthony dies on March 13, 1906. It is sudden because Stanton, despite near blindness and immobility, wrote so intently right to the end that editors had supplies of her articles on hand to publish several months after her death. It is sudden because Anthony, at the age of eighty-five, set off for one more transcontinental trip, telling a friend on the Pacific Coast, “it will be just as well if I come to the end on the cars, or anywhere, as to be at home.” Volume VI of this extraordinary series of selected papers is inescapably about endings, death, and silence. But death happens here to women still in the fight. An Awful Hush is about reformers trained “in the school of anti-slavery” trying to practice their craft in the age of Jim Crow and a new American Empire. It recounts new challenges to “an aristocracy of sex,” whether among the bishops of the Episcopal church, the voters of California, or the trustees of the University of Rochester. And it sends last messages about woman suffrage. As Stanton wrote to Theodore Roosevelt on the day before she died, “Surely there is no greater monopoly than that of all men, in denying to all women a voice in the laws they are compelled to obey.” With the publication of Volume VI, this series is now complete.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erik Sand
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-30
  • ISBN : 0190853891
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Imagining the East written by Erik Sand and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theosophical Society (est. 1875 in New York by H. P. Blavatsky, H. S. Olcott and others) is increasingly becoming recognized for its influential role in shaping the alternative new religious and cultural landscape of the late nineteenth and the twentieth century, especially as an early promoter of interest in Indian and Tibetan religions and philosophies. Despite this increasing awareness, many of the central questions relating to the early Theosophical Society and the East remain largely unexplored. This book is the first scholarly anthology dedicated to this topic. It offers many new details about the study of Theosophy in the history of modern religions and Western esotericism. The essays in Imagining the East explore how Theosophists during the formative period understood the East and those of its people with whom they came into contact. The authors examine the relationship of the theosophical approach with orientalism and aspects of the history of ideas, politics, and culture at large and discuss how these esoteric or theosophical representations mirrored conditions and values current in nineteenth-century mainstream intellectual culture. The essays also look at how the early Theosophical Society's imagining of the East differed from mainstream 'orientalism' and how the Theosophical Society's mission in India was distinct from that of British colonialism and Christian missionaries.

Book Mathematics of the 19th Century

Download or read book Mathematics of the 19th Century written by A.N. Kolmogorov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-authored effort, Mathematics of the nineteenth century (to be fol lowed by Mathematics of the twentieth century), is a sequel to the History of mathematics from antiquity to the early nineteenth century, published in three volumes from 1970 to 1972. 1 For reasons explained below, our discussion of twentieth-century mathematics ends with the 1930s. Our general objectives are identical with those stated in the preface to the three-volume edition, i. e. , we consider the development of mathematics not simply as the process of perfecting concepts and techniques for studying real-world spatial forms and quantitative relationships but as a social process as well. Mathematical structures, once established, are capable of a certain degree of autonomous development. In the final analysis, however, such immanent mathematical evolution is conditioned by practical activity and is either self-directed or, as is most often the case, is determined by the needs of society. Proceeding from this premise, we intend, first, to unravel the forces that shape mathe matical progress. We examine the interaction of mathematics with the social structure, technology, the natural sciences, and philosophy. Through an anal ysis of mathematical history proper, we hope to delineate the relationships among the various mathematical disciplines and to evaluate mathematical achievements in the light of the current state and future prospects of the science. The difficulties confronting us considerably exceeded those encountered in preparing the three-volume edition.

Book The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry

Download or read book The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry written by Olivia Loksing Moy and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lonely damsel imprisoned within a castle or convent cell. The eavesdropping of a prisoner next door. The framed image of a woman with a sinister past. These familiar tropes from 1790s novels and tales exploded onto the English literary scene in 'low-brow' titles of Gothic romance. Surprisingly, however, they also re-emerged as features of major Victorian poems from the 1830s to 1870s. Such signature tropes - inquisitional overhearing; female confinement and the damsel in distress; supernatural switches between living and dead bodies - were transfigured into poetic forms that we recognise and teach today as canonically Victorian. The Gothic Forms of Victorian Poetry identifies a poetics of Gothic enclosure constitutive of high Victorian poetry that came to define key nineteenth-century poetic forms, from the dramatic monologue, to women's sonnet sequences and metasonnets, to Pre-Raphaelite picture poems.

Book Long Before the Dodgers

Download or read book Long Before the Dodgers written by James L. Terry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exactly one hundred years before the Brooklyn Dodgers won the 1955 World Series, the Brooklyn Excelsiors were playing on the same grounds where the Dodgers would begin their long history. Brooklyn and its teams played a prominent role in the early history of the game and reigned as champions of baseball's first organized league through most of the 1860s. The early years of organized baseball (1855-1884) in Brooklyn when it was the center of the baseball universe is the focus of this book. In addition to discussing the early clubs and players, this work examines the transformation of baseball from a recreational pursuit of gentlemen's clubs to a professional spectator sport. It also reveals much about the social norms, gender and race relations, and the role of the media in the early game and covers the many firsts that are attributed to early Brooklyn teams, such as having the first paid player, tragic hero and curveball pitcher, and being the first team to take road trips, play in enclosed ball parks and charge admission. Notably, they were heralded by the most famed sports journalist of the nineteenth century.
