Book excerpt: Contains Ovid's most influential works: -METAMORPHOSES (TRANSFORMATIONS)-FASTI (THE FESTIVALS)-HEROIDES(THE HEROINES)Publius Ovidius Naso (20 March 43 BC - AD 17/18), known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. He was a contemporary of the older Virgil and Horace, with whom he is often ranked as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature. The Imperial scholar Quintilian considered him the last of the Latin love elegists. He enjoyed enormous popularity, but, in one of the mysteries of literary history, was sent by Augustus into exile in a remote province on the Black Sea, where he remained until his death. Ovid himself attributes his exile to carmen et error, "a poem and a mistake", but his discretion in discussing the causes has resulted in much speculation among scholars. The first major Roman poet to begin his career during the reign of Augustus, Ovid is today best known for the Metamorphoses, a 15-book continuous mythological narrative written in the meter of epic, and for works in elegiac couplets such as Ars Amatoria ("The Art of Love") and Fasti. His poetry was much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and greatly influenced Western art and literature. The Metamorphoses remains one of the most important sources of classical mythology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Roman poet known to the English-speaking world as Ovid, wrote on topics of love, abandoned women, and mythological transformations. Ranked alongside Virgil and Horace as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature, Ovid was generally considered the greatest master of the elegiac couplet. His poetry, much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, had a decisive influence on European art and literature for centuries. The Imperial scholar Quintilian considered him the last of the Latin love elegists. Although Ovid enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime, the emperor Augustus banished him to Tomis, a Dacian province on the Black Sea, where he remained a decade until his death.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ovid: Selected Works, With Notes and Vocabulary Notwithstanding this progress, there still remains much to be desired in the study of Roman life and literature as such. The study of the Latin language needs to be vivified, on the one hand, by a knowledge of the life and manners of those who used it in their daily intercourse, and, on the other, by a larger acquaintance with the literature which grew out of this life, and which has been preserved to us. It is granted that these studies should not and cannot displace the study of the technique of the language in the early part of the course but when it is remembered that a large percentage of secondary school pupils end their formal studies with graduation from these schools, it is plain that such a course should include a clear view, at least in the large, of Roman life and letters This can be gained, without too great encroachment upon purely linguistic work, if the teacher seizes such opportuni ties for instruction in Roman life as present themselves in the class work itself; and if, in connection with each author studied, some attention is paid to the style and contents of his works as literature and to their place in the great body of Roman letters.
