Book Paraphrase on Luke 1 to 10

Download or read book Paraphrase on Luke 1 to 10 written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus yearned to make the New Testament an effective instrument of reform in society, church, and everyday life, and to this end he composed the Paraphrases, in which the words of Holy Scripture provide the core of a text that was vastly expanded to embrace the reforming “philosophy of Christ.” Paraphrase on Luke 1–10 contains the first half of Erasmus’s Paraphrase on Luke – the second half of which appeared in this series in 2003 – and completes the set of translations of the Paraphrases into English. In his Paraphrase on Luke, Erasmus expands on the original Gospel of Luke in the voice of its original author. The narrative is supplemented by Erasmus’ explications of the text’s moral, theological, and allegorical meanings and its psychological, historical, and geographical context. In addition to a fluid and idiomatic translation, Paraphrase on Luke 1–10 includes extensive annotations for the general or scholarly reader, making this a valuable and accessible resource for the study of both Erasmus and the New Testament. Volume 47 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series.

Download or read book Paraphrase on Luke written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus yearned to make the Bible an effective instrument of reform in society, church, and everyday life, and to this end he composed the Paraphrases, in which the words of Holy Scripture provide the core of a text, vastly expanded to embrace the reforming 'philosophy of Christ.' The Paraphrases were successful beyond all expectations, and were quickly translated into French, English, and other languages. Paraphrase on Luke is the second of two Luke volumes (Volume 47 forthcoming) and the sixth to be published in the New Testament Scholarship series in the Collected Works of Erasmus. The Paraphrase on Luke is an expanded version of the original book in the voice of its original author. The scriptural discourse or narrative is supplemented by Erasmus' explication of the moral, theological, and allegorical meanings; amplification of the dramatic setting with psychological, historical, and geographical detail; and rhetorical elaboration in language and style. Classical authors, earlier Biblical commentators, various theological issues, Erasmus' debts to the traditions of exegesis on this Gospel, and relevant contemporary church controversies all colour the paraphrases, and annotations on these points construct a mosaic portrait of the mind of Erasmus as he confronted Scripture and his readership.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this book is to distill the Christological elements from his voluminous corpus in a manner that shows the range, the coherence, and the value of Erasmus' thinking on matters Christological. While Erasmus works within the broad parameters of orthodox teaching, his critical skills with languages, accent on rhetoric in theology, keen sense of irony, appreciation for the limits of human knowledge, incipient sense of history, emphasis on the welfare of humanity, and passionate defense of peace, give his work a distinctive stamp and thereby make a singular contribution to the history of Christology"--
