Book The String Compositions of Louise Lincoln Kerr

Download or read book The String Compositions of Louise Lincoln Kerr written by Carolyn Waters Broe and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines the string literature of American composer and violist Louise Lincoln Kerr. A biography of Mrs. Kerr is given, emphasizing compositional training and skill, her style of composition, contributions to musical organizations in the Phoenix area, and her donation of the Kerr Cultural Center and her manuscripts to the Arizona State University College of Fine Arts. Selected string compositions are examined for their historical significance, compositional style, performer accessibility, and significance to the repertoire. Kerr made use of Native American and Spanish folk melodies in some of her compositions in a Southwest Impressionist genre. It is the findings of this study that Louise Kerr made significant contributions to the string repertoire and that these works should be edited and published for all to enjoy. Five character pieces for viola and piano are edited in this dissertation in preparation for publication. An entire chapter is devoted to the analysis of the Kerr Violin Concerto, including the influences, harmonic content, and formal aspects of this work. Louise Lincoln Kerr's compositions, as well as compositions by other women composers, comprise "undiscovered treasures" for the violist and the string player. In past centuries, women composers and violists have suffered equally in discrimination and neglect. Historically, women have been denied the opportunity for compositional training, had their creative acumen publicly challenged, and their works rejected for publication on the basis of their sex. Today, women composers are among the most exciting research topics in musicology.

Book Palestina

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leo Zeitlin
  • Publisher : A-R Editions, Inc.
  • Release : 2014-11-01
  • ISBN : 089579800X
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book Palestina written by Leo Zeitlin and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trained in Russia, Zeitlin (1884–1930) was an accomplished composer, conductor, performer, and pedagogue. In writing Palestina, Zeitlin, as he had done during his entire career, was fulfilling the goals of the Society for Jewish Folk Music, which he joined in 1908 while still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory: to compose and perform works of art music on motivic material drawn from Jewish cantillation, liturgy, and folk song. In addition to employing two modes central to Jewish music and several Jewish tunes, in Palestina Zeitlin actually imitates the shofar calls heard in the synagogue before and during Rosh Hashanah and at the conclusion of Yom Kippur. This edition includes an extensive essay on the composer and on the themes and structure of Palestina, with insights into the Capitol Theatre and the role of music in picture palaces of this era.

Book A Critical History of New Music in China

Download or read book A Critical History of New Music in China written by Liu Chingchih and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the nineteenth century, after a long period during which the weakness of China became ever more obvious, intellectuals began to go abroad for new ideas. What emerged was a musical genre that Liu Chingchih terms "New Music." With no direct ties to traditional Chinese music, New Music reflects the compositional techniques and musical idioms of eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth–century European styles. Liu traces the genesis and development of New Music throughout the twentieth century, deftly examining the cultural, social, and political forces that shaped New Music and its uses by politicians and the government.

Written by a renowned Bach scholar, this concise and accessible book provides an introduction to the music and cultural contexts of the composer's most beloved masterpieces, including the Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio, and St. John Passion. In addition to providing historical information, each chapter highlights significant aspects--such as the theology of love--of a particular piece. This penetrating volume is the first to treat the vocal works as a whole, showing how the compositions were embedded in their original performative context within the liturgy as well as discussing Bach's musical style, from the detailed level of individual movements to the overarching aspects of each work. Published in the approach to Easter when many of these vocal works are performed, this outstanding volume will appeal to casual concertgoers and scholars alike." -- Publisher's description
