Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Studies on Typhus Several observers and writers have called attention to the close clinical resemblance of Rocky Mountain spotted fever to typhus. One of us having seen typhus fever in England, and later the spotted fever in Montana, was also struck by the clinical similarity of the two diseases. Typhus fever being one of the quarantinable diseases under the regulations of the Treasury Department, it seemed desirable both on theoretical and practical grounds to take up the study of typhus fever in Mexico in order to determine whether the two diseases are really identical, particularly as the 'work of Ricketts had developed a basis for the identification of the Rocky Mountain disease. Ricketts has shown that Rocky Mountain spotted fever has a definite clinical course in certain animals, particularly guinea pigs and monkeys, in which it also produces characteristic anatomical lesions. He has shown that in the guinea pig, after intraperitoneal inoculation of blood of spotted fever, there appears in from two to five days a dis tinct rise in the temperature of the animal. The fever continues to rise for two or three days, after which it maintains itself at about the level which it has attained for two or three days longer. At the end of this time the animal either dies or the fever begins to subside. The obj edtive signs of the infection are a roseolar eruption, with hemorrhage into and frequently gangrene of the external genitals. At necropsy the most striking features are a greatly enlarged spleen and swollen and hemorrhagic lymph nodes. With these facts in mind, we took up the study of typhus as it presents itself in Mexico City. Our observations of the disease in'the Hospital General bring out certain definite clinical differences be tween this disease and the Rocky Mountain fever. These differences we will discuss in a later paper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Etiology and Pathology of Typhus

Download or read book The Etiology and Pathology of Typhus written by S. Burt Wolbach and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etiology and Pathology of Typhus: Being the Main Report of the Typhus Research Commission of the League of Red Cross Societies to Poland The decision of the League of Red Cross Societies to send a commission to Poland for the purpose of making researches upon Typhus was initiated by Richard P. Strong then Medical Director of the League of Red Cross Societies. The laboratory members of the Commission sailed from New York on the thirtieth of January, 1920 with the intention of returning in July or August. Owing to delays caused by difficulties of transportation and supply the Commission did not arrive in Warsaw until the twenty-fifth of February. The original destination was Vilna, but after a brief visit there it was decided that better opportunities for the work were to be had in Warsaw through the facilities offered by the Polish Government. There were still many difficulties to be overcome and not until the end of March were observations begun. On every side, interest in and willingness to assist the work was evidenced. Thanks are due from the members of the Commission to Mr. Hugh Gibson, American Minister to Poland, Sir Horace Rumbold, British Minister to Poland, Mr. William C. Boyden, Commissioner of the League of Red Cross Societies to Poland, Colonel Henry A. Shaw, Chief of Sanitary Department of the League of Red Cross Societies in Poland, and to Colonel A. J. Chesley, American Red Cross Commissioner to Poland; it is especially wished to express thanks to the staff of the American Red Cross in Poland, who individually willingly met many calls for help. Without the keen cooperation received from the Polish authorities, the work of the Commission would have been impossible. By every representative of the Polish Government, from the Chief of State, General Pilsudski, downwards, earnest and intelligent assistance was constantly evidenced. Excellent facilities for the Commission's work were provided in Warsaw. Two wards of the St. Stanislaus Typhus Hospital were placed entirely under its control. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Typhoid and of Typhus Fever I may simply say, here, that their authors describe, prin cipally, a fever, or form of fever, which is rarely met with in this country; and that they do not represent the actual state of our knowledge upon this subject. It must be regarded as especially unfortunate, that, until within a few years, the greater part of our information, relating to continued fever, has been derived from writers, who have treated, mostly, and under the same name as that gene rally used by ourselves, of a disease, or form of disease, differing, in many important respects, from that which is most common with us; and, that, in this way, so great a degree of confusion has been introduced into our notions of fever. Book Typhoid Fever and Typhus Fever Classic Reprint

Download or read book Typhoid Fever and Typhus Fever Classic Reprint written by H. Curschmann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typhoid Fever and Typhus Fever The excellence of the series of monographs issued under the editorship of Professor Nothnagel has been recognized by all who are sufficiently familiar with German to read these works, and the series has found a not inconsiderable proportion of its distribution in this and other English-speaking countries. I have so often heard regret expressed by those whose lack of familiarity with German kept these works beyond their reach, that I was glad of the opportunity to assist in the bringing out of an English edition. It was especially gratifying to find that the prominent specialists who were invited to co-operate by editing separate volumes were as interested as myself in the matter of publication of an English edition. These editors have been requested to make such additions to the original articles as seem necessary to them to bring the articles fully up to date and at the same time to adapt them thoroughly to the American or English reader. The names of the editors alone suffice to assure the profession that in the additions there will be preserved the same high standard of excellence that has been so conspicuous a feature in the original German articles. In all cases the German author has been consulted with regard to the publication of this edition of his work, and has given specific consent. In one case only it was unfortunately necessary to substitute for the translation of the German article an entirely new one by an American author, on account of a previous arrangement of the German author to issue a translation of his article separately from this series. With this exception the Nothnagel series will be presented intact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Short Treatise on Typhus Fever Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Treatise on Typhus Fever Classic Reprint written by George Leith Roupell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Treatise on Typhus Fever The subject briefly discussed in the following pages involves a considerable share of medical literature, and is as complicated in its nature as difficult in practice. To have approached the consideration of a most important fever without thought and reflexion would have been quite unpardonable, yet the pains bestowed upon it appear as nothing when compared with the attention that it deserves. Of the faults and incompleteness of this short treatise, no one can be more aware than its author, but only those who have studied the prevailing epidemic, traced the history of corresponding disorders, and consulted the numerous works which have been written upon it, can appreciate the toil which a full investigation would require. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etiology of Typhus Exanthematicus After the removal Of the large colonies with the loop, the remaining agar is sliced with a sterile scalpel so that any small colonies may be detected. This method of removing colonies necessitates the destruction Of the medium, so that the subsequent development Of colonies, which have not yet matured, is interfered with. The method Of removing colonies with a capillary pipette as soon as they appear, is not as valuable because the technic is a more difficult one to acquire. Furthermore, the anaerobic value of the medium is destroyed by the introduction of the pipette. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
