Download or read book Ras and Cancer in the 21st Century written by Linda VanAelst and published by Perspectives Cshl. This book was released on 2018 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ras proteins are key molecular switches in cell signaling pathways that, when activated, trigger cell growth and division. Mutations that produce abnormally active Ras proteins are common in human cancers, particularly those of the pancreas, lung, and colon. These cancers can be difficult to treat because Ras oncoproteins have long been considered 'undruggable.' Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine covers the recent progress that has been made in understanding Ras biology, how Ras activation leads to tumorigenesis, and ways in which oncogenic Ras signaling may be targeted therapeutically. The contributors review the biochemical characteristics of the different Ras isoforms (HRAS, KRAS, and NRAS), their main effectors and signaling pathways, and the mutations that lead to their constitutive activation. Recent work showing that some Ras oncoproteins may be effectively inhibited by small molecules is covered, as is work on alternative targets (e.g., enzymes that catalyze posttranslational modifications of Ras) and inhibitors (e.g., nucleic acids). The authors also discuss how organoids and mouse models are being used to study tumor progression and therapeutic efficacy. This volume is therefore essential reading for all cancer biologists, cell and molecular biologists, and pharmacologists concerned with understanding and treating Ras-driven cancers.

Download or read book Searching for Health Information written by Vicki S. Freimuth and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searching for Health Information reviews the research on the process of seeking health information and contributes to that literature by analyzing the largest available database on health-information-seeking behavior, the Cancer Information Service (CIS), a referral service sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. But the book is not only about CIS. Vicki S. Freimuth, Judith A. Stein, and Thomas J. Kean describe the general context in which people search for health information about a variety of diseases and other health concerns. They then present a theoretical overview of the nature of information and the way people search for it. By analyzing data obtained from more than a million calls to CIS over a four-year period and by studying follow-up surveys of over 7500 of these callers, the authors contribute to our understanding of the process of information seeking. The communication of health information is increasingly important, and this book breaks new ground in its analysis of one successful system.

Download or read book Life Over Cancer written by Keith Block and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Keith Block is at the global vanguard of innovative cancer care. As medical director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Evanston, Illinois, he has treated thousands of patients who have lived long, full lives beyond their original prognoses. Now he has distilled almost thirty years of experience into the first book that gives patients a systematic, research-based plan for developing the physical and emotional vitality they need to meet the demands of treatment and recovery. Based on a profound understanding of how body and mind can work together to defeat disease, this groundbreaking book offers: • Innovative approaches to conventional treatments, such as “chronotherapy”–chemotherapy timed to patients’ unique circadian rhythms for enhanced effectiveness and reduced toxicity • Dietary choices that make the biochemical environment hostile to cancer growth and recurrence, and strengthen the immune system’s ability to attack remaining cancer cells • Precise supplement protocols to tame treatment side effects, relieve disease-related symptoms, and modify processes like inflammation and glycemia that can fuel cancer if left untreated • A new paradigm for exercise and stress reduction that restores your strength, reduces anxiety and depression, and supports the body’s own ability to heal • A complete program for remission maintenance–a proactive plan to make sure the cancer never returns Also included are “quick-start” maps to help you find the information you need right now and many case histories that will support and inspire you. Encouraging, compassionate, and authoritative, Life over Cancer is the guide patients everywhere have been waiting for.

Download or read book A New Deal for Cancer written by Abbe R. Gluck and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unprecedented constellation of experts—leading cancer doctors, policymakers, cutting-edge researchers, national advocates, and more—explore the legacy and the shortcomings from the fifty-year war on cancer and look ahead to the future. The longest war in the modern era, longer than the Cold War, has been the war on cancer. Cancer is a complex, evasive enemy, and there was no quick victory in the fight against it. But the battle has been a monumental test of medical and scientific research and fundraising acumen, as well as a moral and ethical challenge to the entire system of medicine. In A New Deal for Cancer, some of today’s leading thinkers, activists, and medical visionaries describe the many successes in the long war and the ways in which our deeper failings as a society have held us back from a more complete success. Together they present an unrivaled and nearly complete map of the battlefield across dimensions of science, government, equity, business, the patient provider experience, and more, documenting our emerging understanding of cancer’s many unique dimensions and offering bold new plans to enable the American health care system to deliver progress and hope to all patients.
