Book excerpt: This important new book is the first of a series of volumes collecting the essential articles by the eminent and highly influential philosopher Saul A. Kripke. It presents a mixture of published and unpublished articles from various stages of Kripke's storied career. Included here are seminal and much discussed pieces such as "Identity and Necessity", "Outline of a Theory of Truth", "Speaker's Reference and Semantic Reference", and "A Puzzle About Belief." More recent published articles include "Russell's Notion of Scope" and "Frege's Theory of Sense and Reference" among others. Several articles are published here for the first time, including both older works ("Two Paradoxes of Knowledge", "Vacuous Names and Fictional Entities", "Nozick on Knowledge") as well as newer ("The First Person" and "Unrestricted Exportation"). "A Puzzle on Time and Thought" was written expressly for this volume. Publication of this volume -- which ranges over epistemology, linguistics, pragmatics, philosophy of language, history of analytic philosophy, theory of truth, and metaphysics -- represents a major event in contemporary analytic philosophy. It will be of great interest to the many who are interested in the work of one its greatest living figures.

Book Critical Essays

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gilbert Ryle
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2009-06-16
  • ISBN : 1134012144
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book Critical Essays written by Gilbert Ryle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilbert Ryle was one of the most important and controversial philosophers of the Twentieth century. Long unavailable, Critical Essays: Collected Papers Volume 1 includes many of Ryle’s most important and thought-provoking papers. This volume contains 20 critical essays on the history of philosophy, with writing on Plato, Locke and Hume as well as important chapters on Russell and Wittgenstein. It also includes three essays on phenomenology, including Ryle’s famous review of Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time first published in 1928. Although Ryle believed phenomenology ‘will end in self-ruinous subjectivism or in a windy mysticism’ his review also acknowledged that Heidegger was a thinker of great originality and importance. While surveying the developments in the philosophy of language and philosophical logic, Ryle sets out his own conception of the philosophers’ role against that of his predecessors and contemporaries. Together with the second volume of Ryle’s collected papers Collected Papers Volume 2 and the new edition of The Concept of Mind, all published by Routledge, these outstanding essays represent the very best of Ryle’s work. Each volume contains a substantial introduction by Julia Tanney, and both are essential reading for any student of twentieth-century philosophies of mind and language. Gilbert Ryle (1900 -1976) was Waynflete Professor of Metaphysics and Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford, an editor of Mind, and a president of the Aristotelian Society. Julia Tanney is Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent, and has held visiting positions at the University of Picardie and Paris-Sorbonne.

Book excerpt: Atle Selberg's early work, which lies in the fields of analysis and number theory, concerns the Riemann zeta-function, Dirichlet’s L-functions, the Fourier coefficients of modular forms, the distribution of prime numbers and the general sieve method. It is brilliant and unsurpassed, and is in the finest classical tradition. His later work, which cuts across function theory, operator theory, spectral theory, group theory, topology, differential geometry and number theory, has enlarged and transfigured the whole concept and structure of arithmetic. It exemplifies the modern tradition at its sprightly best and reveals Selberg to be one of the master mathematicians of our time. This publication will enable the reader to perceive the depth and originality of Atle Selberg’s ideas and results, and sense the scale and intensity of their influence on contemporary mathematical thought. Volume I contains his early papers until 1987.

Book Collected Papers Volume 1

Download or read book Collected Papers Volume 1 written by Stephen Stich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the best and most influential essays that Stephen Stich has published in the last 40 years on topics in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of language. They discuss a wide range of topics including grammar, innateness, reference, folk psychology, eliminativism, connectionism, evolutionary psychology, simulation theory, social construction, and psychopathology. However, they are unified by two central concerns. The first is the viability of the commonsense conception of the mind in the face of challenges posed by both philosophical arguments and empirical findings. The second is the philosophical implications of research in the cognitive sciences which, in the last half century, has transformed both our understanding of the mind and the ways in which the mind is studied. The volume includes a new introductory essay that elaborates on these themes and offers an overview of the papers that follow.
