Book The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction 1908 2008 People Events and Challenges in Mathematics Education

Download or read book The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction 1908 2008 People Events and Challenges in Mathematics Education written by Fulvia Furinghetti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.

Download or read book Flow Deformation and Fracture written by Grigory Isaakovich Barenblatt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over forty years of teaching experience are distilled into this text. The guiding principle is the wide use of the concept of intermediate asymptotics, which enables the natural introduction of the modeling of real bodies by continua. Beginning with a detailed explanation of the continuum approximation for the mathematical modeling of the motion and equilibrium of real bodies, the author continues with a general survey of the necessary methods and tools for analyzing models. Next, specific idealized approximations are presented, including ideal incompressible fluids, elastic bodies and Newtonian viscous fluids. The author not only presents general concepts but also devotes chapters to examining significant problems, including turbulence, wave-propagation, defects and cracks, fatigue and fracture. Each of these applications reveals essential information about the particular approximation. The author's tried and tested approach reveals insights that will be valued by every teacher and student of mechanics.

Book Seeding Global Collaboration

Download or read book Seeding Global Collaboration written by Patrick Brown and published by Axial Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeding Global Collaboration presents essays written for “Functional Collaboration in the Academy,” a conference held at the University of British Columbia, in July, 2014. The essays attempt to explore and advance Bernard Lonergan’s central achievement, a revolutionary method for collaborative inquiry relevant to both the natural sciences and the human sciences. Each essay is an exercise focusing on a specific collaborative task in a particular area of interest. These range from research in neuroscience to interpreting space and time, from forging new housing policies and communicating macroeconomic dynamics to performing distinct collaborative tasks as part of a unified process of caring for ecosystems. The essays attempt to illustrate the power of the method. But they also seek to seed a new ethos of efficient collaboration and effective meaning. Functional collaboration amounts to a novum organon for scientific and academic inquiry, one potentially capable of meeting the daunting problems and global challenges of our time.

Book Piketty s Plight and the Global Future

Download or read book Piketty s Plight and the Global Future written by Philip McShane and published by Axial Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a revolutionary challenge to Thomas Piketty and others attempting to come to grips with the problem of income inequality. In Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Piketty rightly takes contemporary economics to task for its preoccupation with “petty mathematical problems.” Yet despite his massive appeal to data, Piketty, like Galbraith, Mankiw, and others, is insufficiently radical to the extent that he remains trapped in muddled descriptive categories, haunted by flaws in selecting and ordering the significant data. This “is like a physicist searching data for traces of the Higgs particle without eyes laden with the standard model." McShane’s text provides an inviting glimpse of a fresh context, a new paradigm, a precise heuristic.

Book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research

Download or read book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research written by Pierre Marquis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of AI research, ranging from basic work to interfaces and applications, with as much emphasis on results as on current issues. It is aimed at an audience of master students and Ph.D. students, and can be of interest as well for researchers and engineers who want to know more about AI. The book is split into three volumes: - the first volume brings together twenty-three chapters dealing with the foundations of knowledge representation and the formalization of reasoning and learning (Volume 1. Knowledge representation, reasoning and learning) - the second volume offers a view of AI, in fourteen chapters, from the side of the algorithms (Volume 2. AI Algorithms) - the third volume, composed of sixteen chapters, describes the main interfaces and applications of AI (Volume 3. Interfaces and applications of AI). Implementing reasoning or decision making processes requires an appropriate representation of the pieces of information to be exploited. This first volume starts with a historical chapter sketching the slow emergence of building blocks of AI along centuries. Then the volume provides an organized overview of different logical, numerical, or graphical representation formalisms able to handle incomplete information, rules having exceptions, probabilistic and possibilistic uncertainty (and beyond), as well as taxonomies, time, space, preferences, norms, causality, and even trust and emotions among agents. Different types of reasoning, beyond classical deduction, are surveyed including nonmonotonic reasoning, belief revision, updating, information fusion, reasoning based on similarity (case-based, interpolative, or analogical), as well as reasoning about actions, reasoning about ontologies (description logics), argumentation, and negotiation or persuasion between agents. Three chapters deal with decision making, be it multiple criteria, collective, or under uncertainty. Two chapters cover statistical computational learning and reinforcement learning (other machine learning topics are covered in Volume 2). Chapters on diagnosis and supervision, validation and explanation, and knowledge base acquisition complete the volume.

Download or read book Waves in Fluids written by Sir M. J. Lighthill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive textbook in which the author describes the science of waves in liquids and gases. Drawing on a subject of enormous extent and variety, he provides his readers with a thorough analysis of the most important and representative types of waves including sound waves, shock waves, waterwaves of all kinds, and the so-called internal waves (inside atmospheres and oceans) due to intensity stratification. Emphasis throughout is on the most generally useful fundamental ideas of wave science, including the principles of how waves interact with flows. This standard work on one of the great subdivisions of the dynamics of fluids is lucidly written and will be invaluable to engineers, physicists, geophysicists, applied mathematicians or any research worker concerned with wave motions or fluid fllows. It is especially suitable as a textbook for courses at the final year undergraduate or graduate level.
