Book Collected Papers

Download or read book Collected Papers written by Lloyd Appleton Metzler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of this volume in the Harvard Economic Studies merits a word of explanation. Metzler's doctoral thesis, "Interregional Income Generation," was accepted by Harvard University in 1942 and awarded the Wells Prize for the year 1944-45. Thus the prize essay now appears in print, vastly enriched by the company of Metzler's later papers, all of which have been lighly edited for consistency. The opening chapter of Metzler's thesis investigated the comparative statics and stability properties of a two-country world with Keynesian internal conditions. The second chapter of Metzler's thesis approached the classic "transfer problem" in the context of a Keynesian two-country model. The extensive final chapter of Metzler's thesis, which had not been published, dealt with financial equilibrium in the context of international capital transfers, augmenting the Keynesian income-equilibrium conditions that underlie the basic analysis of the foreign-trade multiplier with the requirement of equilibrium in the market for securities. Metzler's later work in international economics touched upon a number of topics. One of these was the joint influence of tariffs on the terms of trade and distribution of income, explored in two papers published in 1949. Metzler's contributions have also done much to advance the theory of monetary adjustments in the international economy.

Book excerpt: Gilbert Ryle was one of the most important and yet misunderstood philosophers of the Twentieth Century. Long unavailable, Collected Essays 1929-1968: Collected Papers Volume 2 stands as testament to the astonishing breadth of Ryle's philosophical concerns. This volume showcases Ryle's deep interest in the notion of thinking and contains many of his major pieces, including his classic essays 'Knowing How and Knowing That', 'Philosophical Arguments', 'Systematically Misleading Expressions', and 'A Puzzling Element in the Notion of Thinking'. He ranges over an astonishing number of topics, including feelings, pleasure, sensation, forgetting and concepts and in so doing hones his own philosophical stance, steering a careful path between behaviourism and Cartesianism. Together with the Collected Papers Volume 1 and the new edition of The Concept of Mind, these outstanding essays represent the very best of Ryle's work. Each volume contains a substantial preface by Julia Tanney, and both are essential reading for any student of twentieth-century philosophies of mind and language. Gilbert Ryle(1900 -1976) was Waynflete Professor of Metaphysics and Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford, an editor of Mind, and a president of the Aristotelian Society. Julia Tanneyis Senior Lectuer at the University of Kent, and has held visiting positions at the University of Picardie and Paris-Sorbonne.

Book The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud

Download or read book The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud written by and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 8099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (RSE) is founded on the canonical Standard Edition (SE) translation from the German by James Strachey, while adding a new layer of revisions and translations. Conceptual and lexicographic ambiguities are clarified inextensive new annotations. Drawing on established conventions and intellectual traditions, the Revised Standard Edition supplements Freud’s writing with substantial editorial commentaries addressing controversial technical terms and translation issues through the lens of modern scholarship—a living text in dialogue with itself and the reader. The RSE also includes 56 essays and letters which were not included in the SE. In the RSE text and footnotes a subtle underlining distinguishes, in an easy and accessible way, Mark Solms’s revisions and additions, from the historical translation and commentaries of James Strachey’s Standard Edition. Readers can examine what Strachey contributed before the revisions in tandem with Solms’s updates, new translations, annotations, and commentaries, collectively bringing Freud’s text and Strachey’s translation into dialogue with five decades of research, including the most recent developments in the field. Commissioned by the British Psychoanalytical Society and co-published by Rowman & Littlefield, the Revised Standard Edition brings together decades of scholarly deliberation concerning the translation of Freudian technical terms while retaining the best of Strachey’s original English translation. This landmark work will captivate a wide audience, from interested lay readers to practicing clinicians to scientists and scholars in fields related to psychoanalysis.
