Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tancred; or, The New Crusade (1847) is a novel by Benjamin Disraeli. About Tancred, Lord Montacute, the novel's idealistic young hero, seems destined to live the life of a conventional member of the British ruling class. Dissatisfied with his life in fashionable London circles, he instead leaves his parents and retraces the steps of his Crusader ancestors to the Holy Land, hoping there to "penetrate the great Asian mystery"[2] and understand the roots of Christianity. He meets the beautiful Eva, daughter of a Jewish financier, and becomes involved in the political machinations of her foster-brother, the brilliant Fakredeen, a Lebanese emir. At Fakredeen's instigation Tancred is kidnapped and held captive, but is nevertheless allowed to visit Mount Sinai. He then has a vision of an angel who tells him he must be the prophet of "the sublime and solacing doctrine of theocratic equality",[3] a concept which Disraeli leaves somewhat hazy. Tancred falls ill, and is released at the instigation of Eva, who nurses him back to health. She teaches him about the glories of Mediterranean civilization and the debt that Christianity owes to Judaism. Tancred, in love with Eva and utterly convinced that she is right, proposes marriage, but the romance is broken off when his parents appear to reclaim their son and take him back to England.

Book RE DRESSING MIRIAM 19th CENTURY ARTISTIC JEWISH WOMEN

Download or read book RE DRESSING MIRIAM 19th CENTURY ARTISTIC JEWISH WOMEN written by Irina Rabinovich and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at exploring the reciprocal interaction between art and culture, and specifically how the literary and artistic images of mid nineteenth-century Jewish female artists are interwoven with their factual lifestyles, self-representations, and the reception of their work. By analyzing the reciprocal relationship between the dominant culture in which they are embedded and their work, I show how the literary and artistic images of Jewish female artists (as depicted by Jews and non-Jews) are interwoven with the factual lifestyles, culture, and self-representations of real Jewish artists. Moreover, my research reveals how those representations are related to society’s centuries-long ambivalence towards Jews, and specifically towards Jewish female artists, as it is revealed in literature and art.

Book excerpt: Asian and Asian American studies emerged, respectively, from Cold War and social protest ideologies. Yet, in the context of contemporary globalization, can these ideological distinctions remain in place? Suggesting new directions for studies of the Asian diaspora, the prominent scholars who contribute to this volume raise important questions about the genealogies of these fields, their mutual imbrication, and their relationship to other disciplinary formations, including American and ethnic studies. With its recurrent themes of transnationalism, globalization, and postcoloniality, Orientations considers various embodiments of the Asian diaspora, including a rumination on minority discourses and performance studies, and a historical look at the journal Amerasia. Exploring the translation of knowledge from one community to another, other contributions consider such issues as Filipino immigrants’ strategies for enacting Asian American subjectivity and the link between area studies and the journal Subaltern Studies. In a section that focuses on how disciplines—or borders—form, one essay discusses “orientalist melancholy,” while another focuses on the construction of the Asian American persona during the Cold War. Other topics in the volume include the role Asian immigrants play in U.S. racial politics, Japanese American identity in postwar Japan, Asian American theater, and the effects of Asian and Asian American studies on constructions of American identity.
