Book In the Spirit of the Buddha

Download or read book In the Spirit of the Buddha written by Paul R. Fleischman and published by Pariyatti. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of prose poems is based upon the teaching of the Buddha. The selections have been chosen for inspiration, rather than representing the full span of the teaching. We have previously presented them as slides, or read them aloud to friends, on various occasions, such as after workshops, following assistant teacher meetings, around fireplaces in national parks, or after evening metta. They have consistently been received with appreciation, and have evoked multiple requests for their publication. All of these compositions combine the Buddha’s thoughts with contemporary phrasing. They cannot be considered direct quotes from the Pali Canon, because we have worked only with English language translations, and because we have combined similar passages, or modified the language for readability. But at the same time, we can’t claim that these words are original to us, because they are in the spirit of the Buddha. They are brief, poetic, re-speaking of some of the Buddha’s most important ideas. They are sparks from the campfire that continue to glow in the dark. Our intention is that these slides, or pages, will inspire meditators and nonmeditators alike. They are written from the authentic experience of the troubling human condition, and they speak from the standpoint of suffering and the Path out of suffering. They are insights that have crossed the bridge of time from ancient India to today. We hope you will find wisdom flowing through time on the river of words that originates in the ancient spring of the Pali Canon. —Paul R. and Susan K. Fleischman

Book Dimensions of Buddhist Thought

Download or read book Dimensions of Buddhist Thought written by Francis Story and published by Buddhist Publication Society. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises Francis Story’s contributions to the two serial publications The Wheel and Bodhi Leaves, which belong to his best and most mature writing. With its rich and variegated contents, this book may well serve as an introduction to the Buddha's teachings. The Buddha once said that his Teaching has only one taste, that of liberation. Yet, being a Teaching of Actuality, Buddhism has also dimensions extending to wide fields of human life and thought. Some of them are mirrored in the essays of this volume. These wide-ranging and penetrative writings offer, therefore, many stimulating approaches to Buddhist thought and its application to problems of our time. Contents 1 Hymn for Vaishakha 2 The Buddha—a Unique Teacher 3 The Supreme Conqueror 4 The Appeal of Buddhism 5 The Uniqueness of Buddhism 6 The Four Noble Truths 7 Dialogues on the Dhamma 8 The Scientific Approach to Buddhism 9 The Buddhist World View in the Age of Science 10 A Larger Rationalism 11 Of Gods and Men 12 Prayer and Worship 13 Gods and their Place in Buddhism 14 Cosmological Thought in Buddhism and Modern Science 15 Expanding Universe and Steady-States Universe 16 The Magic Mountain 17 Is there a Beginning? 18 Buddhism and the Origin of Life 19 Divine Creation or Lawful Genesis? 20 Buddhist Meditation 21 Buddhist Mental Therapy 22 Buddhist Lay Ethics 23 The Place of Animals in Buddhism 24 Action 25 Kamma and Causality 26 Kamma and Freedom 27 Collective Karma 28 Beauty and the Buddhist 29 Omniscience and the Buddha 31 Samsara 32 The Way of Dispassion 33 Nibbana

  • ISBN : 0861719743
  • Pages : 427 pages

Download or read book Food for the Heart written by Chah and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-06-10 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned for the beauty and simplicity of his teachings, Ajahn Chah was Thailand's best-known meditation teacher. His charisma and wisdom influenced many American and European seekers, and helped shape the American Vipassana community. This collection brings together for the first time Ajahn Chah's most powerful teachings, including those on meditation, liberation from suffering, calming the mind, enlightenment and the 'living dhamma'. Most of these talks have previously only been available in limited, private editions and the publication of Food for the Heart therefore represents a momentous occasion: the hugely increased accessibility of his words and wisdom. Western teachers such as Ram Dass and Jack Kornfield have extolled Chah's teachings for years and now readers can experience them directly in this book.
