Book excerpt: "An imposing edifice of thought. Every one of its twenty chapters will richly repay careful reading. Those passages dealing with ethics, love, the significance of knowledge, and the meaning of life are hard to surpass." - New York Evening Post The title of this book, Tertium Organum, boldly refers no less to a reorganization of all knowledge, but it is primarily a study of psychology, more specifically the psychology of our higher mind. For Ouspensky what we can call the higher mind represents, within a single person, the development of an entirely new way of understanding. In short, psychology is the art of self-study. With remarkable scope and sophistication, Ouspensky shows us in this book, which has been hailed as "a work of genius," just how vast and strange our universe really is.

Book excerpt: Gabriela Stefan Sabbioni showed up uninvited in my bedroom on my sixteenth birthday. He stood in the shadows smelling of whiskey and death and wrapped a broken, blood-crusted necklace around my neck. I thought he’d strangle me with it. That night, he left a message for my father. He said he’d be back to take something precious. I never delivered that message, though. I wonder if things would be different if I had because now, two years later, he’s back. And he’s not hiding in any shadows. He’s come to make good on his promise. He’s back to take that something precious. Me. Stefan Marchese is the manipulator of my family’s tragedy. I won’t just bring him to his knees. I’ll bury him for what he did. Taking his daughter is only the beginning. I’ll do it knowing I’m starting a war. I’ll do it knowing my enemies will become his allies. They’ll stop at nothing to destroy me and he’ll stop at nothing to get her back. I’ve never shied away from war, though. I’m not one to play nice and I don’t share my toys. I’ll demolish you if you touch what’s mine. And she is most definitely mine.

Book Feelings

    Book Details:
  • Author : James D. Laird
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2007-01-11
  • ISBN : 0198025912

Download or read book Feelings written by James D. Laird and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feelings argues for the counter-intuitive idea that feelings do not cause behavior, but rather follow from behavior, and are, in fact, the way that we know about our own bodily states and behaviors. This point of view, often associated with William James, is called self-perception theory. Self-perception theory can be empirically tested by manipulating bodily states and behaviors in order to see if the corresponding feelings are produced. In this volume, James D. Laird presents hundreds of studies, all demonstrating that feelings do indeed follow from behavior. Behaviors that have been manipulated include facial expressions of emotion, autonomic arousal, actions, gaze, and postures. The feelings that have been induced include happiness, anger, fear, romantic love, liking, disliking, hunger, and feelings of familiarity. These feelings do not feel like knowledge because they are knowledge-by-acquaintance, such as the knowledge we have of how an apple tastes, rather than verbal, knowledge-by-description, such as the knowledge that apples are red, round, and edible. Many professional theories of human behavior, as well as common sense, explain actions by an appeal to feelings as causes. Laird argues to the contrary that if feelings are information about behaviors that are already ongoing, feelings cannot be causes and that the whole mechanistic model of human behavior as "caused" in this sense seems mistaken. He proposes an alternative, cybernetic model, involving hierarchically stacked control systems. In this model, feelings provide feedback to the control systems, and in a further elaboration, this model suggests that the stack of control systems matches a similar stack of levels of organization of the world. An original contribution to the study of the relationship between feelings and behavior, the volume will be of interest to social, emotional, and cognitive psychologists.

Billie Delphine has always been content standing on the sidelines while her identical twin sister, Blythe, gets all the attention, including a glamorous lifestyle with billionaire Ethan Kheiron, who will do anything to wrestle back control of the family fortune from his younger brother, Heath. But when Blythe and Ethan disappear while Billie is visiting them in New York, the last thing Billie wants is to be mistaken for her sister, or be falsely accused of a crime Billie knows Blythe did not commit. So when Heath suggests they work together to find them, Billie agrees. But a life of luxury, personal shopping sprees, and private jets cannot hide the years of unresolved differences between sisters, nor the decades of lies that have left the Kheiron family divided. And even as Billie slowly falls for Heath, she knows that until they all settle their differences, they're just pawns in someone else's game of power - where some of them are more expendable than others.

Book excerpt: He's gorgeous, charming, and barely knows I exist... until I become his fake fiancee and for the next thirty days, he'll do everything to prove to his father that he's a changed man or risk getting cut off from the family fortune. But when the line between what’s real and pretend gets blurred, where do we draw the line and end the charade? Giana It’s not easy working for billionaire heir Bryce Holden III, not when all he ever does is party and party some more all while I make sure all his to-dos on his To Do list get done. But when he botches an important presentation after a wild night on the town, his father issues him an ultimatum: straighten up or get cut off from the family fortune. So he proposes we pretend to be engaged for the next 30 days while he straightens out his life and in return, he’ll take care of my grandmother’s medical expenses. It’s a win-win proposition and as long as we lay low, thirty days will go by fast. But when his mother insists on planning the wedding of the century, where do I draw the line and put a stop to the charade? Bryce When my father issues his ultimatum to settle down or get cut off from the family fortune, the last thing I expect is to hear him mention my assistant’s name. Did he really mean Giana, my plain Jane assistant who just happens to be a whiz with blueprints and LEED documentation? The same Giana who’s always made me look good while expertly disappearing in the background? So I give my dad exactly what he wants: I get engaged to the only woman he’s ever approved of. Sure, it’s fake, and with everyone getting what they want from the arrangement whether it’s getting my dad’s very rare seal of approval to a hotel expansion that’ll exceed every green building rating in the world, what’s the worst thing that could happen?
