The principal aim of this study is to illuminate how public middle school teachers in both general and special education perceive and describe their experiences with collaboration in the context of including students with varying abilities and challenges in the general education curriculum and setting. Data were collected from sixteen volunteer co-researcher participants using a long interview format. In the analysis of results, themes and subcategories indicate that teachers know about collaboration and come to their work every day expecting to collaborate. Participants describe positive experiences and factors promoting successful collaboration, as well as struggles and conflicts relating to collaboration. Results suggest that teachers learn how to teach students with varying abilities and challenges through an informal ad hoc type of collaboration. There are significant benefits resulting from collaboration for both teachers and students. Implications for practice include giving serious consideration to pre-service and in-service teacher education programs to incorporate modeling and teaching collaboration. Also, public schools need to seriously consider developing and sustaining teacher professional development led by teachers with an increased emphasis on teacher collaboration." -- Abstract

Special education teachers have multiple responsibilities, including tracking the students on their caseloads. Some special education teachers are able to be in the classroom with general education teachers, but in general, many are unable to be there. This makes the communication and collaboration quite difficult. Collaboration is necessary for all teachers to meet the needs of students who receive special education services. A review of existing literature revealed there are not many studies conducted on effective collaboration among special and general education teachers. The attitudes teachers form about collaboration, time, understanding of special education and the process can truly influence collaboration as a whole. Many teachers believe they do not have the time or the resources to effectively collaborate with special education teachers. A possible solution to this problem is the creation of a resource binder. Many districts may already have a system in place to assist with the time, information, and resources needed to collaborate; some may even have a resource binder in place. A possible solution to the views general education teachers have of collaboration, time, and understanding of special education is to create a resource binder, which addresses each. The purpose of a special education resource binder is to have a useable guide for general education teachers to reference before, during, and after collaboration has taken place. Additionally it can be an adaptable resource that has tools added to and taken away from as time goes on.

Is it about including a special group of disabled learners or students seen to have 'special needs' (them) or is it concerned with making educational institutions inclusive, responsive to the diversity of all their students (us)? In this unique comparative study, the editors have brought together an international team of researchers from eight countries to develop case-studies which explore the processes of inclusion and exclusion within a school or group of schools set in its local and national context. The study includes classroom observation, the experiences of the school day of students and interviews with staff, students, parents and school governors. Through an innovative juxtaposition of the case-studies and commentaries on them, differences of perspective within and between countries are revealed and analysed. The study arose from a dissatisfaction with previous research, which presents 'national perspectives' or seeks findings that have global significance. This book avoids such simplification and draws attention to the problems of translation of practice across cultures. The editors start from an assumption of diversity of perspective which like the diversity of students within schools can be viewed as problematic or as a resource to be recognized and celebrated.

Book excerpt: Increased accountability mandates from the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 have resulted in general education teachers with disabled students in their classrooms. Within the inclusive classroom, the special education teacher and the general education teacher must develop a collaborative relationship that will consider the needs of the special education students and general education students. Villa and Thousand (1996) described the benefits of collaboration in schools: "Collaboration enables school personnel to meet diverse student needs through shared expertise and ownership of problem definitions and solutions" (p. 170). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how special education teachers and general education teachers in inclusive classrooms collaborate regarding the needs of students. The participants for this study were four special education teachers, four general education teachers, and the administrator in one elementary school located in Mississippi. The research questions for this study were derived from six defining characteristics of collaboration as described by Friend and Cook (1996). The six defining characteristics are: (a) collaboration is voluntary; (b) collaboration requires parity among participants; (c) collaboration is based on mutual goals; (d) collaboration depends on shared responsibility for participation and decision making; (e)collaboration requires individuals to share responsibility for outcomes. There were two research questions posed for this study: (1) How do special education teachers collaborate, as defined by Friend and Cook (1996), when working with general education teachers? (2) How do general education teachers collaborate, as defined by Friend and Cook (1996), when working with special education teachers?

Book excerpt: Teachers often do not communicate with one another when working to meet the needs of their students. The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the need, nature and manner by which general and special education teachers communicate and collaborate to address the educational needs of their students. A review of the educational literature reveals that a burden is placed on the educational community given the often conflicting statutory obligations to: fully include special needs students in the general classroom, comply with State mandated general education curriculum requirements and implement instructional guidelines required by Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for students with special needs. The literature further confirms that both general and special education teachers have difficulty securing the support they need to help special needs students meet their IEP goals in the context of the curriculum requirements of the general classroom. The participants in the survey are twenty five (25) teachers from a suburban elementary public school in Northern California. Interviews were also conducted with school administrators, general education and special education teachers from the school. The research findings indicate that communication between general and special education teachers is the most important aspect of collaboration and the primary focus of communication is the coordination of IEP goals with the curriculum of the general classroom given the statutory obligations to integrate special needs students into the classroom. This information can be used to not only address behavior issues, but can serve as a basis for the informal progress monitoring of IEP goals.
