Book The Weeping Willow

Download or read book The Weeping Willow written by Ben O'Dea and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the fifth day of October 1934, I was born into a working-class family in a little country village in North Cork, Ireland. I can vividly remember the hardships and great fear during the war years, but we as a family were never hungry or cold. During my school days, I was maybe a little above average in most subjects, but writing was my favorite subject. As I grew older, neighbors or friends would sometimes ask me to write something for some occasion or others, such as a poem or a funny song or something. As time went on, I began to write stories, poems, and songs for my own enjoyment. By then I was into driving heavy machinery, and writing was a form of relaxation. But the noise from the machinery had a great effect on my hearing. As a result, I am now almost deaf. However, time must go on, and now that Im retired, I can spend more time at my writing. My wife is a keen gardener, and I sat outside the front door one sunny day, admiring her beautiful array of flowers. My gaze fell on a lovely little willow tree, which was now in full bloom. I decided to write a little story (magical of course) about this wonderful little tree. Hence I have this story the Weeping Willow. I hope you will enjoy it. Happy reading, and as we say in Ireland, Slainte.

Book excerpt: Neither superstition nor spiritual aspiration signified anything particular to the Staniers, and formany generations now they had been accustomed to regard their rather sinister family legend withcynical complacency. Age had stolen the strength from it, as from some long-cellared wine, and inthe Victorian era they would, to take their collective voice, have denied that, either drunk or sober, they believed it. But it was vaguely pleasant to have so antique a guarantee that they would be sosumptuously looked after in this world, while as for the next....The legend dated from the time of Elizabeth, and was closely connected with the rise of thefamily into the pre-eminent splendour which it had enjoyed ever since. The Queen, in one of herregal journeys through her realm (during which she slept in so incredible a number of beds), visitedthe affiliated Cinque Port of Rye, and, after taking dinner with the mayor, was riding down one ofthe steep, cobbled ways when her horse stumbled and came down on its knees. She would certainly have had a cruel fall if a young man had not sprung forward from the crowdand caught her before her Grace's head was dashed against the stones. He set her on her feet, swiftlyreleasing the virgin's bosom from his rough embrace, and, kneeling, kissed the hem of her skirt. The Queen bade him rise, and, as she looked at him, made some Elizabethan ejaculation ofappreciative amazement-a "zounds," or a "gadzooks," or something

Book excerpt: One of NPR’s Great Reads of 2016 “A lively assemblage and smart analysis of dozens of haunting stories…absorbing…[and] intellectually intriguing.” —The New York Times Book Review From the author of The Unidentified, an intellectual feast for fans of offbeat history that takes readers on a road trip through some of the country’s most infamously haunted places—and deep into the dark side of our history. Colin Dickey is on the trail of America’s ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and “zombie homes,” Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places. Some have established reputations as “the most haunted mansion in America,” or “the most haunted prison”; others, like the haunted Indian burial grounds in West Virginia, evoke memories from the past our collective nation tries to forget. With boundless curiosity, Dickey conjures the dead by focusing on questions of the living—how do we, the living, deal with stories about ghosts, and how do we inhabit and move through spaces that have been deemed, for whatever reason, haunted? Paying attention not only to the true facts behind a ghost story, but also to the ways in which changes to those facts are made—and why those changes are made—Dickey paints a version of American history left out of the textbooks, one of things left undone, crimes left unsolved. Spellbinding, scary, and wickedly insightful, Ghostland discovers the past we’re most afraid to speak of aloud in the bright light of day is the same past that tends to linger in the ghost stories we whisper in the dark.

And despite his good intentions when he becomes an adult, hardship is never far behind as he sets out to create a life for himself, establish relationships with others, and take on potential jobs. One day he will be forced to confront his painful childhood past head-on. But will his heart find the closure it’s been seeking for so long? When Tender is the Heart not only pushes us to think of our relationships with one another but also the affection we hold in our hearts for others. It encourages us to question if our hearts are truly at peace with our past as much as with the present. This deeply moving book will remind us all of how we can find love, forgiveness, and even grace from the people who have shaped our hearts and minds along our journey and, most importantly, within ourselves. When Tender is the Heart is filled with the spirit of love, forgiveness, and grace. It is sure to stay with you long after you have read it.

Book excerpt: This book is a provocative and invigorating real-time exploration of the future of human evolution by two of the world’s leading interdisciplinary ecologists – Michael Charles Tobias and Jane Gray Morrison. Steeped in a rich multitude of the sciences and humanities, the book enshrines an elegant narrative that is highly empathetic, personal, scientifically wide-ranging and original. It focuses on the geo-positioning of the human Self and its corresponding species. The book's overarching viewpoints and poignant through-story examine and powerfully challenge concepts associated historically with assertions of human superiority over all other life forms. Ultimately, The Hypothetical Species: Variables of Human Evolution is a deeply considered treatise on the ecological and psychological state of humanity and her options – both within, and outside the rubrics of evolutionary research – for survival. This important work is beautifully presented with nearly 200 diverse illustrations, and is introduced with a foreword by famed paleobiologist, Dr. Melanie DeVore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.
