Book excerpt: The Opus Maximum gathers the last major body of unpublished prose writings by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Consisting primarily of fragments dictated to Joseph Henry Green, probably between 1819 and 1823, these writings represent all that exists of what Coleridge considered to be "the principal Labour" and "the great Object" of his life, which he called variously the Logosophia and Magnum Opus. Dedicated to "the reconcilement of the moral faith with the Reason," Coleridge's envisioned Magnum Opus was supposed to "reduce all knowledges into harmony." While such a synthesis finally eluded him, and the Magnum Opus remained unfinished, the surviving fragments nonetheless bear powerful witness to Coleridge's engagement with theology, moral philosophy, natural philosophy, and logic, among other disciplines. Among the subjects that will particularly interest readers are Coleridge's criticisms of Epicureanism, pantheism, and German Naturphilosophie; his attempt to ground reason in faith; and his reflections on personhood (especially in the relationship between mother and child), on will, on language, and on the Logos. Previously unknown to all but a handful of scholars, the manuscripts presented here provide valuable insight into a crucial period of Coleridge's intellectual development, as he became increasingly dissatisfied with Naturphilosophie and struggled to affirm Trinitarian Christianity on a rational basis. With this volume, The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, begun forty years ago under the sponsorship of the Bollingen Foundation and the editorship of the late Kathleen Coburn, is now complete.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coleridge From September to December he was at Cambridge, which he quitted without taking a degree, though the indulgent authorities kept his name for some time upon the books. Instead of flying to his betrothed at Bristol, he repaired to London, beguiling the cares of life with poesy in Charles Lamb's company at the Salutation and Cat, until Southey came to look for him and carried him off. Southey himself had in the interim been ejected and disinherited by his anti Jacobin and monocratic aunt, and the financial prospect appeared blank in the extreme, until a Bristol publisher, Joseph Cottle, a Philistine and a poetaster, but able to discern in others the genius lacking to himself, came to the rescue by offering Southey fifty guineas in advance for his unfinished Joan of Arc, and Coleridge thirty guineas for his poems, the most important of which, Religious Musings, was then progress ing at the average rate of a line a day. Coleridge displayed more energy in the courses of political and theological lectures he delivered during the spring and summer, which, spirited, witty, and cogent, Obtained great success among sympa thizers with their principles. They could not, however, keep the Bristol lodgings going, much less equip a pantisocratic settlement. Another settlement had to be made or relinquished. On October 4th Coleridge was united to Sarah Fricker, without doubt under pressure from Southey, who little foresaw that the result would be that he would have to keep Coleridge's family as well as his own. Coleridge's honour was saved, but his life was blighted. He made, it must be said, the best of the situation, and for a time all seemed to go well: but he must have felt bitter humiliation. Resentment combined with a pecuniary disappointment to prompt a tremendous Objurgation addressed to Southey in the following November for going to Lisbon, and thus, said Coleridge, betraying the sacred cause of Pantisocracy, which both knew to have been long extinct. This idle attempt to rehabili tate himself in his own good opinion at his Mentor's expense led to an interruption of their friendship until Southey's return, when, as Cottle beautifully expresses it, the relentings Of nature threw them silently into each other's arms. But they never walked arm in arm again, except once when they walked with the Devil! The beautiful passage on parted friendship in the second part of Christabel probably alludes to this estrangement. As a "college entrance requirement," the colleges ask only for one poem, the Ancient Mariner, a selection that is unfair to the student as well as to the poet, since the probability is strong that, he will never reach Coleridge again in his student days, and the poet will remain to him for years, perhaps for life, a poet of one pocni. This misrepresentative method of studying literature in isolated fragments is much to be deprecated. In the introduction and notes, material is furnished for a complete working equipment for student and teacher, so that within the limits of this volume a satisfactory treatment of the poet may be accomplished; but as time permits, additional material should lie obtained from outside sources, a guide to which will be found in the bibliographical list. The text of the poems is that of the standard edition edited by J. Dykes Campbell, which conforms essentially to that of the edition of 1829, the last to receive the personal correction of the poet. For any thorough study of Coleridge's life and works Campbell's biography and textual annotations are now indispensable, and every editor must give to him the most cordial acknowledgment of large obligations.
