Book excerpt: This new series provides brief, concise identification guides to all European Coleoptera, and is intended both for professional and amateur entomologists. Each volume will treat a systematic unit comprising about 150-500 species. This will usually mean a family or subfamily, but it can also be a single large genus, or a group of smaller families. Small and systematically unrelated groups may also be collected in one volume. The volumes will be published as the manuscripts become available and not in a systematical order. The geographical area covered will include Europe west of the former USSR, and also includes Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The authors may also include one or more of the adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region, i.e.: Macaronesia, North Africa (Maghreb countries), Cyprus, Asia Minos, Lebanon, Israel, the European part of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, as well as the Transcaucasian area (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaidzjan). Each volume is well illustrated. Where it is useful for the identification, species will be shown in color, either by photographs or by water colors. Sexual dimorphism and extensive polymorphism may also be illustrated. Each volume also includes line drawing illustrations or black and white photographs of male and female genitalia, as well as other morphological details necessary for identification. Each species is treated using the following format: full name; original reference to all available nominal names (valid name and synonyms); differential diagnosis based on external features, including detail figures where necessary; genitalia of male and female of all species; arrows may show diagnostic features; a differential diagnosis is provided when useful; and distribution in short summary form of the total distribution, also outside the area treated. The distribution in Europe will be presented in a table indicating the presence in each of the European national states as well as the major Mediterranean Islands Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Crete. Bionomics in a short paragraph provide information on food, fenology, feeding pattern, larval description etc. Each volume will bring short introductory chapters, treating the morphology, bionomics, distribution, systematics, etc. of the group dealt with, as well as provide a checklist to all treated taxe. The intended frequency of publication is one volume per year. Further volumes are in preparation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brentid beetles are in Northern Europe practically equivalent to the speciose genus Apion, a group of small, rostrate, phytophagous beetles of weevil-like appearance, but easily separated from genuine curculionid weevils by the short scape to the antennae. This book, written by one of the foremost experts on European Apion, identifies and describes the 134 species of brentids known from the British Isles and Continental Europe north of 52 (0)N. For each species is given up-to-date information on the taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, life habits, food plants and parasites. Occurrence by provinces is documented for the 94 species found in Fennoscandia and Denmark. The introductory part provides general information on the group's taxonomic history, morphology of all life stages, life history and economic importance, and some practical hints on how to collect, preserve and identify specimens. The book is richly illustrated with original line drawings by the author and eight plates showing no less than 58 representative species skillfully depicted in colour by the coleopterist, Dr Michael Hansen. Additional features include lists of food plants and parasites, an extensive list of literature and an index.

Book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis

Download or read book Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe a Synthesis written by François Lieutier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.

Book Phytophagous Beetles of Europe

Download or read book Phytophagous Beetles of Europe written by Gaëtan Du Chatenet and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new guide to phytophagous beetles of Europe is devoted to the families Buprestidae, Elateridae, Cleridae and Cerambycidae. A host of species are described and illustrated, to help you recognise and identify almost all the Jewel beetle and Longhorn species you might encounter in Europe, ranging from Portugal and Great Britain to Finland and the Balkans. These include species quite recently described. The guide is packed with new information and discoveries, enriching the entries on the biology in general and the ethology and ecology of each species in particular, allowing for many additional host-plants found over the past few years. Distribution maps, drawn up in line with the most recent publications, feature alongside the descriptions. The new classification adopted is from the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera, by Löbl and Smetana, published from 2003 to 2013, now used by all entomologists. This resolves many of the problems that stem from working with synonymies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHOICE Highly Recommended title, 2022! Forest insects play important roles ecologically and economically. They pollinate plants, decompose dead plant and animal tissue, provide food for vertebrates, regulate pest organisms and shape entire landscapes. Some are considered pests, while others provide usable products. Introduced species may become invasive, while the survival of others is threatened. Forest Insects in Europe: Diversity, Functions and Importance has been written not only with professional entomologists in mind, but also for nature lovers generally. The descriptions of the various roles insects play in forest ecosystems are intended to be easily comprehensible, but still scientific. The book is richly illustrated with attractive photos and contains 580 fascinating colour images of more than 300 different insect and spider species. The German edition was awarded the Prix Moulines by the Swiss Entomological Society in 2019.

Book Handbook of Alien Species in Europe

Download or read book Handbook of Alien Species in Europe written by Delivering Alien Invasive Species and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.

Book The Mayflies of Europe Ephemeroptera

Download or read book The Mayflies of Europe Ephemeroptera written by Ernst Bauernfeind and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the various groups of aquatic insects, mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are of special interest for professional limnologists, entomological researchers, naturalists, and even the dedicated fly angler. Traditionally, identification has been considered difficult. Implementation in environmental monitoring and freshwater management has led to an ever increasing demand for exact information on taxonomy and ecology. This book provides an up-to-date reference for Ephemeroptera identification, including last instar larvae (nymphs), subimago (dun), and male and female imagines. Recent changes in nomenclature are discussed in detail. Keys are provided for genera and introductory chapters characterize every family and genus. Species accounts follow a common format, providing a synonymy, characters for identification (including literature references), remarks (on type material, variation, confusing or extralimital species), and information on biology and distribution patterns. Male genitalia are illustrated by micrographs and line drawings. REM photographs of the egg chorionic structure are provided for genera and selected species. Habitus of larvae and imagines are, for most genera, illustrated by color photographs. The geographical area covered is Europe, including the European part of Russia, the Mediterranean islands, as well as North Africa. Additional information is provided for adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region. A comprehensive index, check list, and distribution catalogue (following the widely adopted concept of Illies' Limnofauna Europaean) allow for quick information on all species recorded so far in Europe.
