Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wisecracking former car thief turns amateur sleuth in this “appealing, offbeat” thriller series debut from an Edgar Award–winning author (Booklist). It’s 1974. Foggy Moskowitz, once a Jewish car thief on the run from the Brooklyn authorities, is now in Florida working for Child Protective Services. For personal reasons. An unlikely but tenacious child protection officer, he’s investigating the case of a missing infant taken from the hospital by her addict mother. But the case takes several unexpected turns—including a vision quest—as Foggy journeys from seedy Fry’s Bay to Indian Seminole swampland. Along the way he encounters more than a few interesting characters, including John Horse, an Indian mystic, and works to foil a vast land-grab scam by an uber-rich felon. By turns amusing and moving, mixing passion with pathos, and introducing some truly colorful characters, Cold Florida is the first in an irreverent mystery series from the acclaimed author of the Fever Devlin novels. “DePoy’s lively mix of Seminole history and the wry observations of a ‘Yankee Jew criminal’ make for an amusing tale.” —Publishers Weekly “Those who are able to roll with Foggy will get an unholy kick out of the characters’ flexible allegiances and the hero’s colorful descriptions.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An outstanding explanation of Florida weather and climate processes and phenomena. A valuable read for all residents of the Sunshine State who spend time outdoors or on the water."—Jason C. Senkbeil, University of Alabama "A unique and detailed overview of Florida weather as it relates to both small and large scale atmospheric circulations. A must-read for those interested in what makes Florida’s weather so interesting."—Steven Lazarus, Florida Institute of Technology Florida is home to two of the world’s major types of climate—tropical wet-dry and humid subtropical. It ranks among the top states for tornadoes and is more frequently affected by lightning and thunderstorms than any other state. Florida is vulnerable to fog, drought, and wildfires. And it is notorious for its most prominent natural event—the hurricane. This book explores the conditions, forces, and processes behind Florida’s surprisingly varied and dynamic weather. The authors discuss Florida’s location, landscape, and population, as well as the position of the sun and the importance of evaporation and condensation. They explain the influence of atmospheric circulation patterns such as the Hadley Cell, the Coriolis force, and the Bermuda-Azores High. They also describe the qualities of cold, warm, stationary, and occluded fronts and how they generate precipitation and freezes. In addition to revealing why severe weather systems and phenomena like hail and lightning occur, the book also reviews the procedures in place to track and measure these events and warn citizens in danger. Major weather incidents from Florida’s history are narrated, including often overlooked accidents caused by smoke and fog. After showing how climate has changed in the past, the authors look ahead to what further climate change would mean for the future. With many maps, helpful diagrams, and clear explanations, this book is an illuminating and accessible guide to Florida’s dramatic weather and climate.

Book The Archaeology of the Cold War

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Cold War written by Todd A. Hanson and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War was one of the twentieth century's defining events, with long-lasting political, social, and material implications. It created a global landscape of culturally and politically significant artifacts and sites that are critical to understanding and preserving the history of that conflict. The stories of these artifacts and sites remain mostly untold, however, because so many of the facilities operated in secret. In this volume, Todd Hanson examines the Cold War's secret sites through three theoretical frameworks: conflict archaeology, the archaeology of the recent past, and the archaeology of science. He presents case studies of investigations conducted at some famous--and some not so famous--historic sites that were pivotal to the conflict, including Bikini Atoll, the Nevada Test Site, and the Cuban sites of the Soviet Missile Crisis. Hanson illustrates how, by examining nuclear weapons testing sites, missile silos, peace camps, fallout shelters, and more, archaeology can help strip away the Cold War's myths, secrets, and political rhetoric in order to better understand the conflict's formative role in the making of the contemporary American landscape. Addressing modern ramifications of the Cold War, Hanson also looks at the preservation of atomic heritage sites, the phenomenon of atomic tourism, and the struggles of America's atomic veterans. As the Cold War retreats into the annals of history, and its monuments fade away, so too do the opportunities to gain deeper insight into the successes--and the failures--of the era. Hanson suggests topics for future archaeological research and reflects on the implications of failing to study or preserve North America's Cold War heritage. A volume in the series the American Experience in Archaeological Perspective, edited by Michael S. Nassaney
