Book excerpt: This first manuscript on cold injuries was written in the period 1945-1946 as the result of personal experience gained in the winter months of the years 1941-1943 on the Northern Front in Russia and subsequent experimental work at the "Chirurgische Uni versitatsklinik" in Breslau (Wroclav) between 1943 and 1945. The intention at the time of writing was to present a summary of our experiences, so that they might serve as a basis for further scientific and clinical work. The manuscript has continually been revised and brought up to date. For purely external reasons publication has been delayed until today. Our experience of cold preservation and of increased resistance to oxygen deficiency in chilled tissue, acquired during the winter periods of the Second World War in Russia, served as a basis for the development of local cryanaesthesia and hibernation, which retroactively furthered to a considerable degree our knowledge of cold and frost injuries. See my monograph on the biology and clinical treatment of the cold injury and general loss of temperature, which appeared separately in 1966 and discusses all biological changes. A comprehensive report on cold injuries was written in English in 1952 at the instigation of Captain A. R. Behnke jr. USA (M.C.), (not available commercially).

Book excerpt: I am delighted to have been invited to Bath for the opening of this Third International Congress of Thermology. The connection between the Congress and the City of Bath is significant. The properties of sunlight have been recognized throughout the centuries. Indeed, many ancient religions were based on the worship of the sun gods. The study of radiant heat was pioneered by Sir William Herschel, whose experiments led him to the study of heat and ultimately of infrared radiation. His son, John, furthered these experiments and formed an image by evaporating alcohol with carbon. In modern technology, infrared radiation plays a vital role in a wide range of applications. Thermal imaging is widely used in the manufacturing industries, especially plastics, glass and paper. The motor industry, for example, employs thermography in the design of windscreens and tire development. Chemical plants and refineries also use it in the important control of expensive energy losses. The communications industry makes extensive use of thermal imaging since overheating and cracks in insulation may cause the unscheduled shut-down of expensive equipment. There is now a special thermal imaging system for the examination of very large scale integrated circuits to help in the development of diagnostic tools for examining circuits which now have features of 1 micron in size, making the conventional method of mechanical probing impossible. This revolution in probing will enable us to maintain the high levels of quality control which are essential in the communications industry.

Heinrich Haape was a young doctor drafted into the German Wehrmacht just before the war began. He was with the spearhead of Operation Barbarossa, tasked with taking Moscow, when it invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Mere hours into the attack, Haape and his fellow soldiers learned the hard way that the Red Army fought with otherworldly tenacity even in defeat. The rapid advance of the early days slowed during the summer, and Haape’s division did not begin the final push on Moscow until October. It was a hard slog, plagued first by rain and mud, then by cold and snow. By early December, German forces had reached the gates of the Soviet capital but could press no farther. By winter’s end, Haape’s battalion of 800 had been reduced to a mere 28 soldiers. The doctor’s account is enthrallingly vivid. The drama and excitement never slacken as Haape recounts his experiences from the unique perspective of a doctor, who often had to join in the fighting himself and witnessed the physical and psychological toll of combat.
