Book Bridging the Gap Between Engineering and the Global World

Download or read book Bridging the Gap Between Engineering and the Global World written by Shobha K. Bhatia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, globalization has had a profound impact on how we view the world and its sustainability. One group of professionals that lies at the heart of sustainability is the engineers. Engineers are trained problem solvers, required to implement technical solutions and are at the forefront of the development of new technologies. Although engineers play a critical role in sustainability, traditional engineering programs typically only focus on the technocentric and ecocentric dimensions of sustainability, providing little training on the sociocentric dimension. With more and more interest in sustainability, it is becoming increasingly important to also provide engineers with an awareness of sociocentric issues and the necessary skills to address them. The aim of this book is to provide engineering educators with a real-life case study that can be brought into existing courses to help bridge the gap between engineering and the global world. The case study focuses on how our engineering study of different natural plant fibers for soil erosion control led us to small villages in Kerala, India, where marginalized women workers often stand waste deep in water several hours a day, clean and beat coconuts by hand, and separate and spin coconut (coir) fibers into yarn by hand, for very low wages. The case study provides insight into the three dimensions of sustainability (technocentric, ecocentric, and sociocentric) and how they come together in a typical engineering problem. Table of Contents: Reinforcing the Classroom / Natural Plant Fibers for Engineering Applications: Technocentric and Ecocentric Dimensions of Sustainability / The Coir Fiber Industry in Kerala, India: Sociocentric Dimension of Sustainability / Case Study / Conclusion / Bibliography

Book Coir Co Operative Societies in Kerala

Download or read book Coir Co Operative Societies in Kerala written by Suresh Kumar C and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coir industry is the traditional, agro based, labour intensive , small scale cottage industry of Kerala. Although it is one of the foreign exchange earners of India, it is struggling for existence because of varying reasons. Both the Central and State governments are giving priority support programmes in protecting the industry as the poor people from backward classes from coastal belt are solely depending on this industry for their bread. Yet, the government intervention to reorganise the industry on co-operative lines has not achieved the desired results. The coir cooperatives continue to be a poor performer. The coir cooperatives failed drastically to ensure regular employment and better wages to the coir workers. In this context, this book is the outcome of a comprehensive study to understand the performance of coir cooperatives in terms of productivity, covering various factors like, labour, capital, wage, intermediate inputs, productivity, intensity, etc., with a special focus on its elasticity, total factor productivity and profitability. This book consists of six chapters describing the entire body of the research work, including the socio-economic conditions of the coir workers. The book would be of immense use in many ways for the administrators, policy makers, planners, and researchers. The book is a product of a doctoral thesis entitled "Coir Co-operative Societies In Kerala-An Economic Analysis" submitted to the University of Kerala on 31-05-2012. Due to many reasons, the data used in this study could not be made up-to-date, but that does not invalidate the findings and their interpretations presented in this book.

Book Occupational Diseases and Health Awareness Through Multimedia

Download or read book Occupational Diseases and Health Awareness Through Multimedia written by Divya C. Senan and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kerala is a major coconut producing state of India. Coir Industry is an important sector as far as economy of Kerala is concerned. The industry provides direct employment to more than 3.5lakh workers, majority of whom are female. Retting of husk presents unique and extremely serious problems along the coastal belt. Besides the ecological degradation, the unhygienic conditions prevailing around the area results in health hazard problems to the people engaged in this cottage industry. Field survey results indicated that 57 % suffered from job-oriented disease like skin disease, blindness, headache, backbone pains and respiratory disease. Hence there arose the need to make them aware of the various health hazards, its causes and effects. The search for a strategy which enables to give them awareness regarding health education results in an awareness program through multimedia. This book is a report of the empirical study stated above. It gives a detail account of the design and development of the Health Literacy Package and its implementation on the women engaged in coir retting. I hope the book is a ready reference for multimedia developers as well as for social activists who could use multimedia technology for social changes.

Book The Labor of Development

Download or read book The Labor of Development written by Patrick Heller and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Kerala in southern India is notable for the ways in which lower-class mobilization and state intervention have combined to create one of the most successful cases of social and redistributive development in the Third World. In contrast to predictions that labor militancy in developing countries threatens to overload fledgling democratic institutions and derail economic growth, The Labor of Development shows that the political and economic inclusion of industrial and agricultural workers in Kerala set the stage for a democratically negotiated capitalist transformation. When compared to the other Indian states, Kerala's departure from the national pattern is tied to its history of social movements and highlights the significance of understanding sub-national patterns of democratic consolidation and state building. The case of Kerala provides important theoretical insights into the circumstances under which the expansion of political and social citizenship can become the basis for managing economic change. Using examples from agriculture, industry, and the informal sector, Patrick Heller examines the institutional and political dynamics through which the demands of organized labor and the imperatives of capitalist growth have evolved from a period of open conflict and stagnation to one of class compromise. He also demonstrates that the Kerala model has broad ramifications for understanding the relationship between substantive democracy and market economies in low-income countries.

Book The Political Economy of Uneven Rural Development

Download or read book The Political Economy of Uneven Rural Development written by Sudarshana Bordoloi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book shows how class relations develop and is a consequence of capitalist development of the rural non-agricultural/non-farm sector (RNFS)---seen as the dialectical relation between the forces and relations of production---as mediated by the state, which produces uneven social and spatial outcomes. Central to the framework for this book are four inter-related conceptual building blocks or themes: social relations of production, productive forces, role of the state and concrete development outcomes of capitalist production in RNFS in the context of class and non-class relations of oppressions. These four conceptual themes follow a logical sequence where each concept evolve in specific contexts within the RNFS; while connected to each other in a dialectical manner; and come together to form the central argument of the book.
