Book The Power to Coin Money

Download or read book The Power to Coin Money written by Thomas Frederick Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1992 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history from colonial times to the present of the monetary powers exercised by the Congress under the Constitution. It follows the evolution of the American banking and monetary system from the perspective of specific provisions in the Constitution that authorize the government to coin money and regulate its value. The author critically examines how far the development of the contemporary money and banking system has pushed beyond the narrow powers spelled out in the Constitution. He shows how changes in congressional legislation, Supreme Court decisions on precedent-setting cases, and the evolution of central banking powers within the Federal Reserve System have expanded the scope of the federal government's monetary powers. Yet, the author views this history within the context of private limits to the authority of Congress and the Congress's distrust of lodging the central bank within the Executive branch, preferring instead to respect an independent central banking tradition. The Hamiltonian tradition, he concludes, still offers the best institutional arrangement to confront unstable markets and destabilizing political influence.

Book Brief History of the Gold Standard GS in the United States

Download or read book Brief History of the Gold Standard GS in the United States written by Craig K. Elwell and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. monetary system is based on paper money backed by the full faith and credit of the fed. gov't. The currency is neither valued in, backed by, nor officially convertible into gold or silver. Through much of its history, however, the U.S. was on a metallic standard of one sort or another. On occasion, there are calls to return to such a system. Such calls are usually accompanied by claims that gold or silver backing has provided considerable economic benefits in the past. This report reviews the history of the GS in the U.S. It clarifies the dates during which the GS was used, the type of GS in operation at the various times, and the statutory changes used to alter the GS and eventually end it. It is not a discussion of the merits of the GS. A print on demand oub.

In fact, it is only the best-known recent experiment in a long line of similar efforts going back to the 1970s. But the story behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and its blockchain technology has largely been untold—until now. In Digital Cash, Finn Brunton reveals how technological utopians and political radicals created experimental money to bring about their visions of the future: to protect privacy, bring down governments, prepare for apocalypse, or launch a civilization of innovation and abundance that would make its creators immortal. Download or read book Debasement written by Kevin Butcher and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debasement of coinage, particularly of silver, was a common feature of pre-modern monetary systems. Most coinages were issued by state authorities and the condition of a coinage is often seen (rightly or wrongly) as an indicator of the broader fiscal health of the state that produced it. While in some cases the motives behind the debasements or reductions in standards are clear, in many cases the intentions of the issuing authorities are uncertain. Various explanations have been advanced: fiscal motives (such as a desire to profit or a to cover a deficit caused by the failure to balance expenditure and revenues); monetary motives (such as changing demand for coined money or a desire to maintain monetary stability in the face of changing values of raw materials or labour costs); pressure from groups within society that would profit from debasement; misconduct at the mint; or the decline of existing monetary standards due to circulation and wear of the coinage in circulation. Certain explanations have tended to gain favour with monetary historians of specific periods, partly reflecting the compartmentalization of scholarship. Thus the study of Roman debasements emphasizes fiscal deficits, whereas medievalists are often more prepared to consider monetary factors as contributing to debasements. To some extent these different approaches are a reflection of discrepancies in the amount of documentary evidence available for the respective periods, but the divide also underlines fundamentally different approaches to the function of coinage: Romanists have preferred to see coins as a medium for state payments; whereas medievalists have often emphasized exchange as an important function of currency. The volume is inter-disciplinary in scope. Apart from bringing together monetary historians of different periods, it also contains contributions from archaeometallurgists who have experience with the chemical and physical composition of coins and technical aspects of production of base alloys

Book GB Continental Currency and Coins

Download or read book GB Continental Currency and Coins written by David Q. Bowers and published by Whitman Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a few weeks after the Shot Heard Round the World, the American Continental Congress authorized its very first issuance of paper money. Continental Currency was based on the hope of a young nation's future and a war for liberty, not on a solid foundation of silver or gold. Despite being plagued by counterfeiting, depreciation, and distrust in the marketplace, this currency marked a great forward step for Britain's freedom-seeking colonies, and its effects on American money would be felt for generations. This Guide Book brings together history, art, and numismatic knowledge to present the complete story of Continental paper money and the mysterious Continental dollar coin (or is it a medal?). Inside you'll find large, full-color images of every Continental Currency bill and 1776 Continental dollars, valuations, market-performance comparison, and historical context for the creation of the currency and the mottoes and emblems shown on these pieces of Revolutionary War history.
