Book excerpt: " "An absorbing self‐portrait of an exceptional cook." – Harold McGee Daniel Patterson is the head chef/owner of Coi in San Francisco, one of America’s most celebrated restaurants. Patterson mixes modern culinary techniques with local ingredients to create imaginative dishes that speak of place, memory, and emotion. His approach has earned him five James Beard nominations and winner of the James Beard Award’s "Best Chef of the West" 2014, two Michelin stars, and a worldwide reputation for pioneering a new kind of Californian cuisine. Now, in his new book Coi: Stories and Recipes, Patterson shares a personal account of the restaurant, its dishes, and his own unique philosophy on food and cooking. 70 recipes are featured with narrative essays, including Chilled Spiced Ratatouille Soup; Carrots Roasted in Coffee Beans; Strawberries and Cream with Tiny Herbs; and Lime Marshmallow with Coal‐Toasted Meringue. This book is beautifully written by Patterson, who is respected for his original food writing in publications such as The New York Times and Lucky Peach, and is also co‐author, along with Mandy Aftel, of Aroma: The Magic of Essential Oils in Food and Fragrance (2004). 150 color photographs by Maren Caruso include atmospheric images of the restaurant and the California landscape. Book Household Cost of Illness

Download or read book Household Cost of Illness written by B. P. Chandramohan and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chikungunya fever is a vector borne disease transmitted by mosquitoes that became widely prevalent in most of the coastal States of Indian Union since 2006. It causes numerous health problems to the victims and cognitive problems for medical practitioners and policy makers. Several episodes of the fever have shown long term physical and neurological disability besides short term morbidity. There is no vaccine available to prevent Chikungunya though it is generally considered non-fatal. Hence the disease can be treated at relatively low cost by simple measures to prevent the severity of the disease. However, poor people treated the diseases relatively costly. Though the disease was not new to India, the disease caused panic among the public and resulted in socio political and medical concern when the epidemic outbreak penetrated fast in to rural and urban areas after 2006.The symptoms, side effects and socio-economic impacts were not similar in the affected areas. In the Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, the disease inflicted more among the rural agricultural laborers and tapper workers in rubber plantations, resulted in severe loss of employment and productivity. The present study is an attempt to analyse the economic impact of Chikungunya fever at the household level in Kanyakuramari District. This report presents the results of the study The Economic Impact of Chikungunya Fever on Household level in Tamil Nadu: A study in Kanyakurmari District This project is undertaken with the financial support from Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshaiah Trust, Chennai. This financial assistance is gratefully acknowledged. I am indebted to Presidency College for providing the necessary facilities to undertake the project. I fail in my duty if I dont mention the helps extended by the post graduate students of Marthandam Christian College, Kanyakumari. Book Thinking Collaboratively

Download or read book Thinking Collaboratively written by D. Randy Garrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking Collaboratively is a theoretical and practical guide to thinking and learning in deep and meaningful ways within purposeful communities of inquiry. Critical thinking has long been recognized as an important educational goal but, until now, has largely been conceived and operationalized as an individual attitude and ability. Increasingly, however, a more relevant and complete cognitive construct has been emerging: thinking collaboratively. Thinking collaboratively is the means to inquire, test, and apply new understandings, and to make sense of the information that bombards us continuously. In short, thinking collaboratively is required to flourish in our highly connected world and, in this book based on more than a decade of research, Garrison provides an essential introduction to this vital concept.

Book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management

Download or read book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management written by Erkki Leppäkoski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-08-31 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first attempt to provide an overall picture of aquatic species invasions in Europe. Its geographical scope stretches from Irish waters in the west to the Volga River and the Caspian Sea in the east, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the south up to the Arctic coast of Europe. Not all parts of the continent could be covered equally, as in some countries species invasions are not yet studied. The book represents the array of all major European aquatic systems in the broadest geographical and ecological scope possible, from fully saline seas, semi-enclosed brackish water bodies and coastal lagoons to freshwater lakes, major river systems and waterways. The key objectives include the present status and impacts on economy and environment caused by non-native aquatic species in European waters. Altogether more than 100 scientists from 24 countries have joined together to synthesize the available information on bio-invasions.

Book The OSS and Ho Chi Minh

Download or read book The OSS and Ho Chi Minh written by Dixee R. Bartholomew-Feis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some will be shocked to find out that the United States and Ho Chi Minh, our nemesis for much of the Vietnam War, were once allies. Indeed, during the last year of World War II, American spies in Indochina found themselves working closely with Ho Chi Minh and other anti-colonial factions-compelled by circumstances to fight together against the Japanese. Dixee Bartholomew-Feis reveals how this relationship emerged and operated and how it impacted Vietnam's struggle for independence. The men of General William Donovan's newly-formed Office of Strategic Services closely collaborated with communist groups in both Europe and Asia against the Axis enemies. In Vietnam, this meant that OSS officers worked with Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, whose ultimate aim was to rid the region of all imperialist powers, not just the Japanese. Ho, for his part, did whatever he could to encourage the OSS's negative view of the French, who were desperate to regain their colony. Revealing details not previously known about their covert operations, Bartholomew-Feis chronicles the exploits of these allies as they developed their network of informants, sabotaged the Japanese occupation's infrastructure, conducted guerrilla operations, and searched for downed American fliers and Allied POWs. Although the OSS did not bring Ho Chi Minh to power, Bartholomew-Feis shows that its apparent support for the Viet Minh played a significant symbolic role in helping them fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Japan's surrender. Her study also hints that, had America continued to champion the anti-colonials and their quest for independence, rather than caving in to the French, we might have been spared our long and very lethal war in Vietnam. Based partly on interviews with surviving OSS agents who served in Vietnam, Bartholomew-Feis's engaging narrative and compelling insights speak to the yearnings of an oppressed people-and remind us that history does indeed make strange bedfellows.

  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Spies and Saboteurs written by Joseph F. Jakub III and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-01-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spies and Saboteurs is the story of the origins of the Anglo-American 'Special Relationship' in human intelligence collection and special operations, which took place amidst the global conflagration that was the Second World War. It is the story of William 'Wild Bill' Donovan - the father of America's Central Intelligence Agency - and of his relationship with legendary British spymasters like William Stephenson, code named 'Intrepid', Stewart Menzies ('C'), chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, Admiral John Godfrey, the powerful and enigmatic director of Naval Intelligence, and General Colin Gubbins, Britain's master saboteur. Relying almost exclusively upon recently declassified OSS and British intelligence documents and survivor interviews, it examines the transatlantic association in espionage and sabotage, guerrilla warfare and disinformation. It explores the evolution of covert relations from a 'tutorial' arrangement with the U.S. as pupil, to an unequal then full partnership, and ultimately to competition and rivalry in the prosecution of the clandestine war.
