Book Manipulating Anisotropic Transport and Superconductivity by Focused Ion Beam Microstructuring

Download or read book Manipulating Anisotropic Transport and Superconductivity by Focused Ion Beam Microstructuring written by Maja D. Bachmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents pioneering work in the relatively new field of focused ion beam (FIB) sculpting of single crystals to produce bespoke devices and enable the investigation of physics that cannot be studied in bulk samples. It begins with a comprehensive and didactic account of how to achieve this sculpting, revealing the ‘tricks of the trade’ of state-of-the-art FIB microstructuring. In subsequent chapters, the author presents ground-breaking results obtained from microstructures of the delafossite oxide metal PdCoO2 and the heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn5. In these elegant, forefront experiments, a new form of directional ballistic transport in the ultra-pure delafossites is described and explained. Furthermore, a new way to spatially modulate superconductivity induced by strain is demonstrated with electrical transport measurements that agree well with predictions based on thermoelastic finite element simulations.

Book Charge Quantization and Kondo Quantum Criticality in Few Channel Mesoscopic Circuits

Download or read book Charge Quantization and Kondo Quantum Criticality in Few Channel Mesoscopic Circuits written by Zubair Iftikhar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores several fundamental topics in mesoscopic circuitries that incorporate few electronic conduction channels. It reports a series of long-awaited experiments that establish a new state of the art. The first experiments address the quantized character of charge in circuits. We demonstrate the charge quantization criterion, observe the predicted charge quantization scaling and a crossover toward a universal behavior as temperature is increased. The second set of experiments addresses the unconventional quantum critical physics that arises in the multichannel Kondo model. We observe the predicted universal Kondo fixed points and validate the numerical renormalization group scaling curves. Away from the quantum critical point, we obtain a direct visualization of the development of a second-order quantum phase transition.

Book Spintronics

Download or read book Spintronics written by Tomasz Dietl and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume focuses on a new, exciting field of research: Spintronics, the area also known as spin-based electronics. The ultimate aim of researchers in this area is to develop new devices that exploit the spin of an electron instead of, or in addition to, its electronic charge. In recent years many groups worldwide have devoted huge efforts to research of spintronic materials, from their technology through characterization to modeling. The resultant explosion of papers in this field and the solid scientific results achieved justify the publication of this volume. Its goal is to summarize the current level of understanding and to highlight some key results and milestones that have been achieved to date. Semiconductor spintronics is expected to lead to a new generation of transistors, lasers and integrated magnetic sensors that can be used to create ultra-low power, high-speed memory, logic and photonic devices. In addition, development of novel devices such as spin-polarized light emitters, spin field effect transistors, integrated sensors and high-temperature electronics is anticipated. - Spintronics has emerged as one of the fastest growing areas of research - This text presents an in-depth examination of the most recent technological spintronic developments - Includes contributions from leading scholars and industry experts
