Book Coherence Properties of Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book Coherence Properties of Electromagnetic Radiation written by Wang Chih-Chiang and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances are surveyed in research on the coherence properties of light and the concept is discussed of the photon degeneracy and the degree of coherence, which plays an important role in explaining many problems such as interference, beats, intensity fluctuations and so on. Since the processes of radiation occur at random the intensity of beat signal is determined by the correlation of the processes. Since photons are regarded as bosons there will be a corresponding term in the intensity fluctuations. From the experimental results available it appears that all coherent properties of light can be explained in terms of the basic concept of quantum mechanics. (Author).

Book Fundamental Studies of the Coherence Properties of Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book Fundamental Studies of the Coherence Properties of Electromagnetic Radiation written by D. L. FALKOFF and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical studies have been made of the quantum mechanical description of coherence in materials such as ferromagnets and superconductors and of electromagnetic radiation. In the latter studies, application has been made to effects of coherence and high power on photodetection. A practical result is that the photon echo measurement is shown to provide a sensitive detector of coherence. Experimental work has been carried out to determine the diffusion coefficients and spin depolarization cross sections of optically pumped alkali vapors in noble buffer gases. A method has been developed to measure the density of cesium vapor as a function of temperature. (Author).

Book A Geometric Study of Coherence Properties of Partially Polarized Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book A Geometric Study of Coherence Properties of Partially Polarized Electromagnetic Radiation written by E. Folke Bolinder and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-known analytic theory of partially polarized electromagnetic waves is complemented with a geometric theory. In the geometric theory the components of the 2 X 2 coherence matrix of a partially polarized plane wave and the Stokes parameters of the wave are treated in two four-dimensional spaces. From the first four-dimensional space a three-dimensional space is derived which constitutes a Poincare model of threedimensional (non-Euclidean) hyperbolic space having a plane, the polarization ratio plane, as the fundamental surface. This model can also be obtained by a generalization to three dimensions of an elementary inversion method called the Isometric Circle Method in the polarization ratio plane. A cross section through the second four-dimensional space, which is a Minkowski model of Lorentz space, yields the Cayley-Klein model of three-dimensional hyperbolic space having the unit sphere, in optics called the Poincare sphere, as fundamental surface. Invariant properties of partially polarized waves are studied by means of the different models. So, for example, transformations of the complex degree of correlation mu and the degree of polarization P (defined as the ratio of the polarized intensity and the total intensity) are studied in the Poincare and CayleyKlein models by means of simple geometric constructions which lucidly show the relationships between the degree of correlation and the degree of polarization. Book Effects of Coherence in Electromagnetic Radiation

Download or read book Effects of Coherence in Electromagnetic Radiation written by Emil Wolf and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes researches concerned with theoretical studies of coherence effects in electromagnetic fields, with special reference to the electromangetic range of the spectrum. Various properties of fluctuating fields were investigated and second and higher order coherence effects were analyzed. Relation between the classical and quantum theory of coherence was also considered. A degree of coherence of arbitrary order was introduced which has some advantages over that introduced earlier by other authors. Further, diagonal coherent state representation of quantum operators was studied. Some related investigations in statistical mechanics, and in diffraction theory of the electromagnetic field were also carried out. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book, edited and authored by a team of world-leading researchers, provides a broad overview of advanced photonic methods for nanoscale visualization, as well as describing a range of fascinating in-depth studies. Introductory chapters cover the most relevant physics and basic methods that young researchers need to master in order to work effectively in the field of nanoscale photonic imaging, from physical first principles, to instrumentation, to mathematical foundations of imaging and data analysis. Subsequent chapters demonstrate how these cutting edge methods are applied to a variety of systems, including complex fluids and biomolecular systems, for visualizing their structure and dynamics, in space and on timescales extending over many orders of magnitude down to the femtosecond range. Progress in nanoscale photonic imaging in Göttingen has been the sum total of more than a decade of work by a wide range of scientists and mathematicians across disciplines, working together in a vibrant collaboration of a kind rarely matched. This volume presents the highlights of their research achievements and serves as a record of the unique and remarkable constellation of contributors, as well as looking ahead at the future prospects in this field. It will serve not only as a useful reference for experienced researchers but also as a valuable point of entry for newcomers.

Book Coherence Properties of Radiation Passing Through a Random Medium

Download or read book Coherence Properties of Radiation Passing Through a Random Medium written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a detailed summary of three lectures concerning the coherence properties of radiation passing through a random medium such as the atmosphere. These lectures consisted of a review of the basic work in the field and a discussion of transient effects, some new work on propagation developed by the author and discussion of a formal method of analysis that allows one to assess the effects of a random medium on a photographic image. The report gives an approximate solution for the development of the mutual coherence function as it propagates through statistically homogeneous and isotropic random media. Only small-angle scattering about the principal propagation direction z is considered.

Book Coherence Properties of Optical Near fields

Download or read book Coherence Properties of Optical Near fields written by Adela M. Apostol and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results included in this dissertation demonstrate that the statistical properties of the electromagnetic fields which exist in the close proximity of inhomogeneous media can be used to extract structural information. They also suggest the possibility to adjust the coherence properties of the emitted radiation by modifying the statistical properties of the interfaces. Understanding the random interference phenomena in the near-field could also lead to new possibilities for surface and subsurface diagnostics of inhomogeneous media. In addition, controlling the statistical properties of radiation at subwavelength scales should be of paramount importance in the design of miniaturized optical sources, detectors and sensors.
