Book Coherence Effects in Heavy Ion atom Collisions Total Cross Sections F Waves Charge Capture Ionization Interference Scattering Amplitudes

Download or read book Coherence Effects in Heavy Ion atom Collisions Total Cross Sections F Waves Charge Capture Ionization Interference Scattering Amplitudes written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to charge capture and ionization by highly stripped projectiles is described and shown to explain cross section systematics through the periodic table. Oscillations in cross section with respect to charge state observed around atomic number 70 are explained as an f-wave resonance in the target electron-projectile scattering. The ratio of H2 to H cross sections for both light and heavy projectiles is shown to fit a two center coherent scattering model; independent scattering by the two centers is not a good assumption for velocities below 4 a.u. Similar coherence effects are predicted in stripping by molecular gases even in multi-electron processes where the independent atom model might be thought valid. Recent experiments on the forward peak of electrons ejected from the projectile show interesting structure which can be partly explained without invoking interference effects. 7 references.

Book Coherence and Correlation in Atomic Collisions

Download or read book Coherence and Correlation in Atomic Collisions written by Hans Kleinpoppen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. KLEINPOPPEN AND J. F. WILLIAMS It has only very recently become possible to study angular correlations and coherence effects in different areas of atomic collision processes: These investigations have provided us with an analysis of experimental data in terms of scattering amplitudes and their phases, of target parameters such as orientation, alignment, and state multipoles, and also of coherence parameters (e. g. , the degree of coherence of excita tion). In this way the analysis of electron-photon, ion-photon, atom-photon, or electron-ion coincidences from electron-atom, ion-atom, or atom-atom collisional excitation has led to a breakthrough such that the above quantities represent most crucial and sensitive tests for theories of atomic collision processes. Similarly, the powerful (e, 2e) experiments (electron-electron coincidences from impact ionization of atoms) have attracted much attention where improved experimental studies and detailed theoretical description provide a wealth of information on either the col lisional ionization process or the atomic structure of the target atom. Interference effects, many-electron correlations, and energy and angular momen tum exchange between electrons in a Coulomb field playa decisive role in the under standing of postcollision interactions. New results on coherence effects and orienta tion and alignment in collisional processes of ions with surfaces and crystal lattices show links to relevant interference phenomena in atomic collisions. In small-angle elastic electron-atom scattering the effect of angular coherence can be studied in a crossed beam experiment.

Book Relativistic Heavy Particle Collision Theory

Download or read book Relativistic Heavy Particle Collision Theory written by Derrick S.F. Crothers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a heavy particle ion (atom, molecule, muon) collides with another in the gas phase at speeds approaching the speed of light, the time-dependent Dirac equation equation must be used for its description, including quantum electro-dynamic, special relativity and magnetic coupling effects. In this book we study one electron in the variety of rearrangement collisions: radiative and non-radiative capture, ionization, capture by pair (one electron, one positron) production and antihydrogen production. Our relativistic continuum distorted-wave theory accounts extremely well for the simultaneous behaviour of the electron with respect to the nuclear charges of the projectile and the target. This is the first book developed in this subject. Containing many diagrams and tables, and fully referenced, it goes beyond chapters in previous books. The relativistic continuum distorted-wave theory developed by the authors group, is shown to be fully Hermitean. Detailed mathematics are provided in nine appendices.

Book Multiple Ionization and Capture in Relativistic Heavy ion Atom Collisions

Download or read book Multiple Ionization and Capture in Relativistic Heavy ion Atom Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We show that in relativistic heavy-ion collisions the independent electron model can be used to predict cross sections for multiple inner-shell ionization and capture in a single collision. Charge distributions of 82- to 200-MeV/amu Xe and 105- to 955-MeV/amu U ion beams emerging from thin solid targets were used to obtain single- and multiple-electron stripping and capture cross sections. The probabilities of stripping electrons from the K, L, or M shells were calculated using the semiclassical approximation and Dirac hydrogenic wavefunctions. For capture, a simplified model for electron capture was uded. The data generally agree with theory.

Book Heavy Ion Collisions At Intermediate Energy Theoretical Models

Download or read book Heavy Ion Collisions At Intermediate Energy Theoretical Models written by Dasgupta Subal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ions are atoms or molecules stripped of their electrons, so they can be accelerated by electric fields. They can be made to hit each other with low energy, intermediate energy, high energy, or very high energy; each energy range seeks to investigate different aspects of hadronic physics. Intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions explore the nuclei far from stability valley, the incompressibility of nuclear matter, the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear environment, the symmetry energy far from the normal density, and other phenomena. This has been an active field of research for last four decades. This is a book for entrants in the field. It is suitable as a companion book in a graduate course. For practitioners in the field it will be useful as a reference.

Book Introduction to the Theory of Heavy Ion Collisions

Download or read book Introduction to the Theory of Heavy Ion Collisions written by W. Nörenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of heavy-ion reactions, nuclear physics has acquired a new frontier. The new heavy-ion sources operating at electrostatic accelerators and the high-energy experiments performed at Berkeley, Dubna, Manchester and Orsay, have opened up the field, and have shown us impressive new prospects. The new accelerators now under construction at Berlin, Daresbury and Darmstadt, as well as those under consideration (GANIL, Oak Ridge, etc. ) are expected to add significantly to our knowledge and understanding of nuclear properties. This applies not only to such exotic topics as the existence and lifetimes of superheavy elements, or the possibil ity of shock waves in nuclei, but also to such more mundane issues as high-spin states, new regions of deformed nuclei and friction forces. The field promises not only to produce a rich variety of interesting phenomena, but also to have wide-spread theoretical implications. Heavy-ion reactions are characterized by the large masses of the fragments, as well as the high total energy and the large total angular momentum typically involved in the collision. A purely quantum-mechanical description of such a collision process may be too complicated to be either possible or inter esting. We expect and, in some cases, know that the classical limit, the limit of geometrical optics, a quantum-statistical or a hydrodynamical description correctly account for typical features.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps surprising that a process which was one of the first to be studied on an atomic scale, and a process which first received attention over seven decades ago, continues to be the object of diverse and intense research efforts. Such is the case with the (seemingly) conceptually simple and familiar mechanism of electron impact ionization of atoms, molecules, and ions. Not only has the multi-body nature of the collision given ground to theoretical effort only grudgingly, but also the variety and subtlety of processes contributing to ionization have helped insure that progress has come only with commensurate work: no pain - no gain. Modern experimental methods have made it possible to effectively measure and explore threshold laws, differential cross sections, partial cross sections, inner-shell ionization, and the ionization of unstable species such as radicals and ions. In most instances the availability of experimental data has provided impetus and guidance for further theoretical progress.
