Book Mental Models in Discourse Processing and Reasoning

Download or read book Mental Models in Discourse Processing and Reasoning written by G. Rickheit and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-10-29 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this interdisciplinary discussion on mental models, researchers from various areas in cognitive science tackle the following questions: What is a mental model? What are the prospects and limitations in applying the mental model notion in cognitive science? How can the ideas on the nature of mental models and their mode of operation be empirically substantiated? The primary goal of the research group was to work out a definition of mental models that embraces the overall use of this construct in cognitive science as well as the more specific conceptions used in particular research domains such as cognitive linguistics. Theoretical claims about the properties of mental models were discussed and their tenability evaluated against the empirical evidence. The volume is divided into three parts. Fundamental aspects of mental models are presented in the first section, the following part contains contributions to the function of mental models in discourse processing, and finally problems of mental models in reasoning and problem solving are outlined.

Book Human Behavior Learning and the Developing Brain

Download or read book Human Behavior Learning and the Developing Brain written by Donna Coch and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together leading authorities from multiple disciplines to examine the relationship between brain development and behavior in typically developing children. Presented are innovative cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that shed light on brain–behavior connections in infancy and toddlerhood through adolescence. Chapters explore the complex interplay of neurobiological and environmental influences in the development of memory, language, reading, inhibitory control, and other core aspects of cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Throughout, the volume gives particular attention to what the research reveals about ways to support learning and healthy development in all children. Illustrations include four pages in full color.

Book Cerebral Reorganization of Function After Brain Damage

Download or read book Cerebral Reorganization of Function After Brain Damage written by Harvey S. Levin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-20 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cerebral Reorganization of Function After Brain Damage integrates basic research on neuroplasticity and clinical research on reorganization of function after brain injury, with a view toward translating the findings to rehabilitation. Historical foundations of research on neuroplasticity are presented to provide a perspective on recent findings. Leading investigators synthesize their work with results from other laboratories to provide a current update on neuroanatomic features that enhance neuroplasticity and provide a substrate for reorganization of function. The capacity for recovery from brain injury associated with focal lesions as compared to diffuse cerebral insult is discussed. Interventions such as environmental enrichment and drugs to enhance reorganization of function after brain injury have been studied in animal models and in human studies. Methodologies to study neuroplasticity are discussed including functional magnetic resonance imaging, neurophysiological measures, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and computational modeling. Implications of neuroplasticity research for innovations in rehabilitation of persons with brain injury are critically reviewed. This text will be particularly appealing to neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychologists, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, speech scientists, and other health professionals engaged in rehabilitation-related research.

  • Author : Anderson Norton
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-12-17
  • ISBN : 3030004910
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Constructing Number written by Anderson Norton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book synergizes research on number across two disciplines—mathematics education and psychology. The underlying problem the book addresses is how the brain constructs number. The opening chapter frames the problem in terms of children’s activity, including mental and physical actions. Subsequent chapters are organized into sections that address specific domains of number: natural numbers, fractions, and integers. Chapters within each section address ways that children build upon biological primitives (e.g., subitizing) and prior constructs (e.g., counting sequences) to construct number. The book relies on co-authored chapters and commentaries at the end of each section to create dialogue between junior faculty and senior researchers, as well as between psychologists and mathematics educators. The final chapter brings this work together around the framework of children’s activity and additional themes that arise in the collective work. The book is aimed to appeal to mathematics educators, mathematics teacher educators, mathematics education researchers, educational psychologists, cognitive psychologists, and developmental psychologists.

Book excerpt: Symbolic Play: The Development of Social Understanding describes the development of symbolic play from infancy through the preschool years. This text is divided into 12 chapters that focus on make-believe as an activity within which young children spontaneously represent and practice their understanding of the social world. The first chapter introduces the development of event schemata produced in symbolic play, about children's management of the playframe, and about the development of subjunctive, or "what if" thought. The next chapters are devoted to the development of joint pretending, specifically the use if shared scripts in the organization of make-believe play and the subtleties of metacommunication. These chapters also emphasize the supporting role of the mother in early collaborative make-believe. These topics are followed by discussions of the child's growing ability to represent the internal states of the inanimate figures whose doing can vicariously enacts. The remaining chapters focus on social interaction through symbolic play with dolls, toy animals, object props, and language. This book will prove useful to psychologists and researchers in the fields of human development, society, and family.
