Book English Language Learners and the New Standards

Download or read book English Language Learners and the New Standards written by Margaret Heritage and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In English Language Learners and the New Standards, three leading scholars present a clear vision and practical suggestions for helping teachers engage ELL students in simultaneously learning subject-area content, analytical practices, and language. This process requires three important shifts in our perspective on language and language learning—from an individual activity to a socially engaged activity; from a linear process aimed at correctness and fluency, to a developmental process, focused on comprehension and communication; and from a separate area of instruction to an approach that embeds language development in subject-area activities. In English Language Learners and the New Standards, the authors: Clarify the skills and knowledge teachers need to integrate content knowledge and language development Show how teachers can integrate formative assessment in ongoing teaching and learning Discuss key leverage points and stress points in using interim and summative assessments with ELLs Provide classroom vignettes illustrating key practices Finally, the authors explain the theories and research that underlie their vision and examine the role of policy in shaping pedagogy and assessment for ELL students.

Book New to the LSP classroom A selection of monographs on successful practices

Download or read book New to the LSP classroom A selection of monographs on successful practices written by Martina Vránová and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Languages for Specific Purposes have always been defined as student-oriented, the rationale behind this volume is to use the rather neglected niche of the other necessary agent of language instruction and thus focus on the LSP practitioner. This turn towards the instructor has been motivated by the fact that a great number of LSP practitioners enter their jobs without previous expertise. They lack LSP education, or they may not even have a background in applied linguistics. This motivation has proven valid as many of the volume’s contributors have faced this particular situation in their professional lives. For insights into the LSP field and guidelines on the best practices, they must rely on their colleagues who offer to share their experience through workshops, conferences, or papers, which is what this volume provides. The primary goal of this volume is to present considerations of what challenges LSP practitioners face and should be prepared for in their jobs and to provide practice-tested methodological guidelines on such demanding teaching techniques as blended and flipped learning or tandem learning. All papers have been written by LSP practitioners and researchers in higher education. Thus, this volume provides both guidance and self-reflection. In other words, it is written by experienced LSP practitioners for aspiring LSP practitioners about how they see themselves and what effort they make to meet the challenges of their jobs. As proof that LSP practice is a global challenge, papers have been collected from many European countries, the USA, Uruguay. Even though most papers are naturally concerned with English, being the lingua franca of today, the collection also features guidelines for teaching Spanish, French and Dutch for specific purposes. Moreover, the target disciplines these languages are taught for encompass business, engineering, sociology or medicine, thus supporting the assumption of the universal character of problems LSP practitioners deal with.

Book Cognates Cognate Linguistics

Download or read book Cognates Cognate Linguistics written by Ruben Moran Molina and published by Cognates.org. This book was released on 2011-08-07 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the language mastery era to today's focus on communicative proficiency, language teachers and learners in America and Europe have disregarded the importance of the Cognate Lexis and Syntax that English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French, among other languages, share. What are Cognates? From the Latin cognatus (co- 'together' + gnatus, pp. of gnasci, 'to be born'), Cognates are words descended from a common ancestor; that is, words having the same linguistic family or derivation (English), la misma familia lingüística o derivación (Spanish), a mesma família lingüística ou derivação (Portuguese), la stessa famiglia linguistica o derivazione (Italian), la même famille linguistique ou dérivation (French). In other words, cognates are those foreign terms we easily understand because they resemble their equivalents in our mother tongues. As a result, we will find for example, that a thousand English -tion nouns have their exact equivalents as Spanish -ción, Portuguese -ção, Italian -zione, and French -tion. This large number of 'similar words and sounds', contrary to what some language learners and teachers think, is not limited to advantageous coincidences; and contrary to what some linguists think, it is not limited to Latin and Greek derivations present in scientific terms. The statistical data provided by our extensive research support the assertion that cognates represent at least 25% of the unique English written words met by Romance language speakers, and vice versa. One of the several outcomes of this research project is The Dictionary of Cognates (DOC), which features 20,000 English-Spanish cognate words + 25,000 frequent cognate collocations. All these words were selected manually from several renowned dictionaries keeping to a minimum infrequent technical, scientific or historical cognate terms. The development of both works, The Dictionary of Cognates and our introduction book on Cognate Linguistics, was based on practicality and frequency rather than on exhaustiveness. Although these books have been introduced in their English - Spanish versions, The Cognate Project as a whole also refers to and applies to Portuguese, Italian, French, Catalan and Romanian. Samples of Portuguese, Italian and French cognates are available at cognates.org, the project’s support site. While reading this book, you will realize that cognate words, collocations and phrases are not regarded as new or foreign by your mind given that they are immediately and effortlessly recognized and comprehended. Actually, our mind does not seem to read foreign words but their cognates in our mother tongue. Even before starting learning a new cognate language, or better said, even without the need of being engaged in the process of learning a new cognate language, the Immediate and Effortless Recognition of Cognates (IERC) is a pleasurable experience. In summary, we can claim that the Cognate Lexis and Syntax shared by certain related languages have not been clearly identified as one of the most important foundations for foreign language acquisition. The teaching and learning approaches and methods available may have overestimated for long the time and effort needed by cognate speakers to learn cognate languages. Additionally, cognates are innate motivators; there is nothing better than comprehensible language to encourage learning and language production. We have disregarded for too long this fantastic linguistic asset of ours; but that is over now. Welcome to the Cognate World.
