Book COFT Conduct of Fire Trainer A New Concept in Tank Gunnery Training

Download or read book COFT Conduct of Fire Trainer A New Concept in Tank Gunnery Training written by D. E. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of developing and sustaining armor crew gunnery proficiency has become increasingly challenging in recent years due to operational and training costs and limited range availability for realistic gunnery training. The Unit-Conduct of Fire Trainer (U-COFT) was thus developed to provide armor force commanders the capability for improving and sustaining crew gunnery combat readiness between range firing periods. A total training system consisting of crew station, visual, and instructional subsystems, the U-COFT is housed in three environmentally controlled shelters that afford limited mobility and self-contained operation. It will be deployed with armor and infantry battalions in 44 locations throughout the free world. The U-COFT instructional system features an extensive library of exercises which train all the gunnery tasks required of a crew in combat, plus an adaptive training management function that permits each crew to improve its proficiency at a rate commensurate with its ability. This paper briefly describes the unique instructional features incorporated in the U-COFT traning system. (Author).

Book A Strategy for Efficient Device based Tank Gunnery Training in the Army National Guard

Download or read book A Strategy for Efficient Device based Tank Gunnery Training in the Army National Guard written by Joseph D. Hagman and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A strategy is proposed for minimizing the device-based training time required to prepare armor crews of the U.S. Army National Guard for on-tank training and live-fire gunnery qualification. Using two devices (i.e., the Conduct-of-Fire Tramer (COFT) and Abrans Full-Crew Interactive Simulation Trainer (AFIST), efficiency is achieved by training only gunnery engagements subjected to later live-fire evaluation, focusing on those engagements not performed to standard, and allocating training time to crews that need it most, as determined through pretesting. Guidance is provided to support strategy implementation at the company level and the conduct of research needed for future strategy refinement."--DTIC.

Book Tank Gunnery

Download or read book Tank Gunnery written by Roland J. Hart and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the effect of TopGun training on main gun M60A3 tank gunnery performance as measured on the Conduct-of-Fire Trainer (COFT) . Three groups of 16 Reserve Component (RC) soldiers were compared using a transfer of training design. Firing under auxiliary sighting conditions, the groups differed on the number of TopGun training sessions (0, 1, or 3) they had before completing a testing session on COFT. Results showed that gunnery speed and accuracy on stationary and moving targets improved during TopGun training and that prior training on TopGun improved subsequent performance on COFT in terms of increased accuracy on stationary target engagements. TopGun performance was also found to be a reliable predictor of COFT performance, with greater correlations found for speed than for accuracy. This report outlines a TopGun- based training strategy for increasing the probability of positive transfer to moving targets, as well as to stationary targets, and for enhancing the overall payoff obtained from TopGun training within the RC.

Book Training with the M1 Conduct of Fire Trainer COFT Instructor Operator I O Perspectives

Download or read book Training with the M1 Conduct of Fire Trainer COFT Instructor Operator I O Perspectives written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military and civilian I-COFT Instructor/Operators (I/O) in the Armor School's Weapons Department possess a wealth of valuable training information gleaned from years of Armor training experience. This information should be shared with other I/Os and Armor trainers. This research was conducted to aid COFT trainers in the field and the schoolhouse by identifying those I/O training techniques that are particularly effective for training tank gunnery skills on the COFT. Structured interviews were conducted with the I/Os to discover how to best use the COFT to train tank gunnery skills. Given the increasing costs of live-fire training and the additional need to specify an optimal mix between simulation-based and field training, the interviews also asked the I/Os to discuss the specific value of live-fire training and its relationship to COFT training. The I/Os described a variety of techniques for training nearly all crew gunnery skills on the COFT. They identified a number of common training problems and offered tips and techniques on how to train particular skills. Various approaches for training target acquisition, tracking, and procedural skills on COFT are discussed, as well as more general COFT training enhancements to be found in the Advanced Matrix that is currently under development. The results also identify those aspects of live-fire training not trained adequately on COFT.

Book The Effects of Amount of Ml Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer U COFT Transition Training on Crew Gunnery Proficiency

Download or read book The Effects of Amount of Ml Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer U COFT Transition Training on Crew Gunnery Proficiency written by David A. Campshure and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the effects of three types of variables on crew M1 Unit Conduct-of-Fire (U-COFT) gunnery proficiency during transition training: time spent training on the M1 U-COFT, soldier-based variables (e.g., time with partner, time in armor), and training-based variables (e.g., classroom hours, time spent on the M60A3 U-COFT). The reliability of the gunnery proficiency test was also assessed. Three groups of TC-gunner teams were tested after having completed 3, 6, or 9 hours of transition training on the M1 U-COFT. Time spent on the U-COFT resulted in improved gunnery performance on only one of seven criterion measures--average miss distance. Since this was the most sensitive measure of gunnery performance, the results suggest that learning may have taken place despite the failure to detect performance improvements on six of the seven criterion measures. Although the three groups differed significantly on a number of training-based variables, only the number of exercises completed in the TC training matrix had an effect on any of the performance measures. The reliability of all of the criterion measures exceeded 0.50, with the reliability of two measures exceeding 0.70. (sdw).

Book Trainer s Guide for the Device Based Time Compressed Army National Guard Tank Gunnery Training Strategy

Download or read book Trainer s Guide for the Device Based Time Compressed Army National Guard Tank Gunnery Training Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a guide for trainers in Army National Guard (ARNG) armor units for a device-based gunnery training strategy. The purpose of the strategy is to reduce or compress the time required to prepare for tank crew gunnery qualifications (i.e., Table VIII). The strategy compresses the required training time by (a) limiting training to those skills and knowledges needed for successful Table VIII performance, (b) focusing training on Table VIII engagements that are most difficult to ARNG crews to perform, and (c) allocating device training time to crews that need it most and away from crews that are demonstrably proficient on the training device. The strategy is designed to be implemented at the local level with either the Conduct-of-Fire Trainer (COFT) or the Guard Unit Armory Device Full-Crew Interactive Simulation Trainer, Armor (GUARDFIST I). Reserve component, Table VIII, Tank gunnery, Army National Guard, Armor training, Training strategy.

Book Conduct of Fire Trainers Study

Download or read book Conduct of Fire Trainers Study written by Joseph R. Paluh and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reflects the results of an investigative study into the techniques offering the most effective solutions to the problems of providing conduct-of-fire training for tank gunners and commanders. The study provides an analysis of related critical task functions as they impact on simulation and training device equipment requirements. Five different technical approaches, identified in a survey of industry for applicable technology are evaluated against system requirements and on the basis of cost, availability, configuration, and support requirements. The study recommends the limited development of an existing prototype, with the concurrent development of a reduced-capability trainer. As a separate but concurrent effort, a conceptual approach is developed for a conduct-of-fire trainer (COFT) integral to an operational vehicle. The integral COFT proposes use of a microprocessor to interface with the vehicle's fire control equipment and ballistic computer, and the use of a liquid crystal to display the target image and special visual effects.
