Book excerpt: Cash Laramie has been in plenty of tight spots, but being buried alive has to be the worst! It all started innocently enough, as a favor for his boss, accompanying a rich woman in her search for her brother. The trail leads to The Bells, a strange hotel run by a brother and sister team, which just happens to be adjacent to the funeral parlor and cemetery ... His friend Miles is nearby, intent on escorting a suspected murderer to Cheyenne for trial. Yet Miles discovers that his charge might be innocent, after all, and lingers to ask questions. And those inquiries mean upsetting some people, which leads to an ambush, and a final reckoning at the outlandish casino complex constructed by a rich bigoted German baron. Throw into the mix the attractive Berenice, a schizophrenic bank manager, irate miners, Chinese workers, a boisterous slot machine salesman, and a devious lawyer and you have another explosive adventure for the Outlaw Marshal.

Book The Ink of Melancholy

Download or read book The Ink of Melancholy written by André Bleikasten and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1990-06-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the late 1920s to the early 1940s was in Faulkner's career one of prodigious fertility, and the creative outburst on which it opens—from The Sound and the Fury (1929) through As I Lay Dying (1930) and Sanctuary (1931) to Light in August (1932)—touches indeed on the miraculous. It is the four children of this miracle that André Bleikasten re-examines and re-evaluates in his substantial new book on Faulkner. But rather than approach Faulkner's fiction from a priori theoretical assumptions and process it through some prefabricated grid, he has concentrated on the text themselves: on the motivations and circumstances of their composition, on the rich array of their themes, structures, textures, on their various narrative protocols and the endless interplay of their tropes and codes, on their points of emphasis and repetition as well as their rifts and gaps. Brilliant in its thought and argument, drawing eclectically on the resources of philosophy, psychoanalysis, anthropology, and other disciplines, and using modern critical theory without ever being arcane or trendy, Bleikasten's book is a highly personal performance and one of the most insightful and stimulating studies that Faulkner has received.

Book Character and Personality in the Novels of William Faulkner

Download or read book Character and Personality in the Novels of William Faulkner written by Ineke Bockting and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bockting has produced a work that focuses on the "people" that Faulkner created in his four major psychological novels: The Sound and the Fury (1929); As I Lay Dying (1920), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936). The author writes not about these people, either as literary characters or as human beings, but instead has allowed them to come alive in their own time, through their own texts. Psychostylistics is the innovative approach to the literary character that Bockting employs, bringing together new developments in narrative psychology and psychiatry with literary stylistics and mind-style to provide detailed textual and contextual evidence in support of its observations on personality. Contents: The Literary Character: Between Life and Linguistic Style; Mind-Style in The Sound and the Fury; Multiple Voices in As I Lay Dying; Light in August and the Issues of Unreliability; Absalom, Absalom!: A Novel of Attribution; Character, Personality, and Psychostylistics.

Book From Modernist Entombment to Postmodernist Exhumation

Download or read book From Modernist Entombment to Postmodernist Exhumation written by Dr Lisa K Perdigao and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How fictional representations of dead bodies develop over the twentieth century is the central concern of Lisa K. Perdigao's study of American writers. Arguing that the crisis of bodily representation can be traced in the move from modernist entombment to postmodernist exhumation, Perdigao considers how works by writers from F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Willa Cather, and Richard Wright to Jody Shields, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, and Jeffrey Eugenides reflect changing attitudes about dying, death, and mourning. For example, while modernist writers direct their plots toward a transformation of the dead body by way of metaphor, postmodernist writers exhume the transformed body, reasserting its materiality. Rather than viewing these tropes in oppositional terms, Perdigao examines the implications for narrative of the authors' apparently contradictory attempts to recover meaning at the site of loss. She argues that entombment and exhumation are complementary drives that speak to the tension between the desire to bury the dead and the need to remember, indicating shifts in critical discussions about the body and about the function of aesthetics in relation to materialized violence and loss.

Book Ordered by Words

    Book Details:
  • Author : Judith Lockyer
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 9780809317028
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Ordered by Words written by Judith Lockyer and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Faulkner created compelling worlds with his words, but he repeatedly used his characters to warn against words. Relying on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of language as both the creation of its user and a social construct, Judith Lockyer outlines Faulkner’s discovery of the power and danger in language. Five of Faulkner’s characters—Horace Benbow, Quentin Compson, Darl Bundren, Isaac McCaslin, and Gavin Stevens—were endowed with a desire for the absolute, inviolable word. Faulkner both shares that desire and argues against it, making the dialogue about language the subtext of all his novels. Here, this continuing dialogue is traced chronologically from Flags in the Dust (Faulkner’s third novel) to A Fable (a late novel here shown in a revealing new light). Lockyer also connects Faulkner’s ideas about language and narration to his social and thematic concerns, particularly to America’s legacy of racial strife. This is a coherent, convincing reading of Faulkner, from the time he finds his true voice and subject in the South through the late novels.
